    Can you imagine a little boy watching this back in 1978?. Is truly genius that trasition between the back and white boy reading the comic and what comes next. This was really revolutionary at that time and the director knew it. It’s just brilliant to use that like “ok, I am going to blow your minds”. Donner was really a great director.

    I remember watching this in the theatre in 1978 at 8 years old. This was a movie. They don't make them like this anymore. John Williams one of the best if not the best movie soundtrack composers. Quality movie and no computers.

      Ah you people and your constant nostalgia blindness. This is a great movie but to say that "they don't make them like this" or that no modern films can compare is to degrade the work of thousands of craftsmen and creative talent. Also, the constant whining about CGI is foolishness. CGI takes just as much if not more work than practical effects, and besides, it's not the effects that matter it's the intent and heart behind them.

    Thank you for this. Watched this movie as a kid back in 80's on VHS. The opening credits and music has become one of the most iconic in all of movie history. I really like how it starts off as a comic where the music is soft and subtle with the little girl's narration, then her voice has the reverb effect while the camera pans to the moon and beyond, and the music seamlessly transits to the main theme. Even now when watching it brings a tear to my eyes when the S appeared with its sound effect cuz it's so nostalgic. I mean, this intro sequence ain't just fanciful blue words appearing on a black background. You are actually travelling from Earth thru space towards planet Krypton where the story begins. What a genius the producer/director is to come out with this brilliant idea. Really wished I'd been born earlier so I can witness this in a theater. Watching Superman in theater back in 1978 must have been an epic experience.

      I saw this opening night December 15th, 1978 at 12 years of age with my Mom and two brothers after waiting 3 hours in a line that wrapped itself around the MANN FOX Theaters In Covina, California. Playing on multiple screens with SOLD OUT shows but lucky to get tickets for 10pm show. We were near the end of the line but it turned out for the best because we sat about 6 rows in front of the screen being presented In 70MM DOLBY STEREO. I can remember it like yesterday as the curtains automatically opened revealing the screen in sync with the lights dimming then a retro 70’s Warner Bros. logo in white modern font within a black box with red background appearing and the audience cheering. When the black & white Daily Planet sequence began my Mom looked at me in disappointment thinking the entire film would be like this then the color cueing into credits started and from there it was EPIC!!! The audience reaction as the credits finished got applause from every single person there then as camera zooms in on Krypton complete silence. For the next 144 minutes nothing short of a spectacle as the late RICHARD DONNER’S visionary & brilliant offering of this beloved comic hero became a cinematic gem 💎 in movie history.

    My late father once told me how he first saw this film 'As an 11 year old sitting in the cinema 2 rows from the front I was listening to the little girl narrator thinking well, at least if its boring the ice cream my older brother had bought me will be good. Then suddenly the cinema speaker volume increased during the pre-titles and the S appeared. I was blown away... I dropped the ice cream on the floor and thought about nothing else but Superman for 2 hours. I came out of the cinema thinking that I had seen something that was actually real'

    I absolutely love these titles. The motion of the pre-titles coming towards camera doesn't make the dramatic appearance of the "S" shield and the rest of them anti-climactic. The sparseness of their content is also great. There's no "And Starring Phyllis Thaxter as Ma Kent" crap. The credits' minimal amount of information commands even more attention from the audience. Verisimilitude to the max. Donner and Mario Puzo showed a superhero movie can be as good as any serious drama. The opening credits promised so much and the movie thoroughly delivered. Others have come close with comic book movies such as The Dark Knight and Infinity War but they mostly fail as they seem to think people want to see endless spectacle on screen and it really is heart, drama and a well thought out story where it is at to make you believe this could all happen. The spectacle is nowhere near as important to believe a fantasy world in my opinion.

Best opening credits ever, with the music saying the title of the movie at just the right moment (and I loved the Star Wars Roll the year before)SU-PER-MAAAAN ta ta tara taaa (lol). When Superman Returns came out, I just went to the theater to experience this again, I did not care how good or bad the movie was. And I did not see Superman III at the theater at all (maybe becoming a teenager changed my taste, this kind of movies became cringy and puerile for me, and looked for something more mature). Glad I did not watch it, the opening credits were gone.

      They were the bigger stars and probably demanded top billing in their contract, like Nicholson did with Batman 11 years later.

    Shame they fucked up the rendering at 01:57 for Christopher Reeve. These 4K titles were recreated for the UHD, then, I take it? It's very, very well done - that pixelation and digital discolouring can only be from a digital rendering. So well done WB for that.

    Guys, I am baffled as to why it took Warner Brothers 45 years since Superman the movie was released in 1978 to release this movie, along 4 other movies starring Christopher Reeve. Keep in mind, we have the Superman The Movie: Extended Cut & Special Edition 2-Film Collection that was released on Blu-ray that has not been released on 4k. What would have been great is if they released the Superman the movie 3-hours tv version (extended cut), and the Special Edition on 4k along with the extended version of Superman 2, 3 and 4 and released all of them in 4k format. That would have been pricey, but it's worth it. What do you guys think?

    I just realized that this is different from the 2001 special edition. They even enhanced the sound effects for the zooming credits. I swore I heard something different, so I checked and looked back at the 2001 special edition. I think I kind of prefer the 2001 edition, also the music and sound of the zooming credits sounded just right. In this 4K release, the music sounds a little softer.

    Despite being one of the best in cinema history, there has always been also a terrible injustice in this opening: CHRISTOPHER REEVE'S NAME SHOULD ALWAYS BE THE FIRST TO APPEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • @SECRETARIATguy224
      @SECRETARIATguy224 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. They'd never have been able to get the movie made if Christopher Reeve had first or even second billing. The producers had secured Brando and Hackman to be in the film before they even had a script, which is what helped them get the funding to get it made. Reeve was a total unknown at the time. It was not an injustice that Reeve was third in the order.

    • @squarefann
      @squarefann 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SECRETARIATguy224 For me, yes, it is an injustice. The main character of Superman 1978 movie is Christopher Reeve, period. And therefore, for me, the one who is the main character of a film must always appear first, whoever he is, even if he is an unknown. Without Brando the film would have been possible but there would have been no film without Chris Reeve, he is the soul and the most important of the film, and therefore should have appeared in the first place, despite being almost an unknown until then at the moment, even Margot must have come second, then Hackman third and fourth, perhaps, Brando ...It's my opinion friend, I respect yours but I don't share it. Thank you!

    • @SECRETARIATguy224
      @SECRETARIATguy224 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@squarefann It's not about being your opinion . . . NOBODY had any idea whatsoever AT THE TIME that Reeve would become, as you quite accurately point out, the heart and soul of the film. The film would never have been made without Brando and Hackman. They were the two biggest bankable stars in the world at the time. You're trying to retroactively say that the unknown Reeve should have gotten top billing. Sure, in hindsight it's easy to say that. It's perfectly fine to have that opinion AFTER THE FACT. However, it's ridiculous to IN HINDSIGHT say that the way they did it was an injustice.

      @@SECRETARIATguy224 Mr, calm man, for you it will be ridiculous, for me not. The movie have a clear main character even before going to the cinema screens or anyone seeing it, I don't play with an advantage, that is incontestable. For me, the order of appearance on the screen is the sad result of fear. I do not care about the names, the $ cache, etc., I value the importance of each character in the film and for me, the main character should be the first to appear in the titles, and not the one with the most name, more fame or more cache $, sir ...Nowadays not so much happens, in the cast of many films there are very established, important and well-known supporting actors and main actors not so established or so well known, and nothing happens ...

    I always thought the glorious music was given short shrift by being so under-mixed in this intro. The choice of giving sonic prominence to the swooshes is a woeful decision that has not aged well, whereas the music is simply timeless.
