    Thankyou, Shelley,
    For the info ❗️
I can relate to a lot of it and appreciate your add-ons for my own interpreting services I provide to my community!

I work in IT as a senior help desk tech. Been doing it since 1997, and I make about 85k a year. But about 5 years ago I started learning ASL and fell in love with the language and culture, now I am conversational. My friends (including one interpreter) told me I should switch careers and become a terp. But I just dont want to restart my career at age 52.

That’s wonderful! It’s a great career. I began my 18 year career at 48. I’m now 64 and have joint pain. In fact this is my last assignment. If you do switch careers, you need to take extra care of your hands. Massages are crucial for hand health. Good luck!!! I’m sure you will love it!

Congratulations 🎉 It’s a shame educational interpreters get paid so little. Let’s hope that changes going forward. 🙏🏻

It’s interesting that you only had an hour minimum for in-person freelance. I live in Florida and we have a 2hr minimum for all in-person freelance work.
I work for a college part time and all the work remote or in-person has a 2hr minimum
I recently started working for an agency in another state that provides remote work and it has a 1 hr minimum

Hi! Thx for comment! I know...I have a 1 hr min for local work usually because I can fit in a full day's work running around and so I feel like if they will give me the flexibility to fit appointments in, a 1 hr min is appropriate. If it was a 2 hr min and I was only there 30 or 45 mins and the next job was for the same medical entity, for example, to me it has just worked out better to fill my schedule with 1 hour blocks with the exception of legal jobs out of town/remote. For example, I have kind of thought of my local courts and local medical facilities as being pseudo employers and I want to be able to schedule 1 hr appointments back to back or squeeze appointments in when needed so to me it has worked best. Thx for your feedback! I know other interpreters are also charging a "booking fee" similar to interpreter referral agencies. I haven't done that yet...
      Have a super day!! ~SH
