I've had similar conversations with friends during uni who worked hourly rate jobs while I made 10x that amount from playing in a ceilidh band one evening. It doesn't just pay for the 2-3 hours of playing we did. It's the 10-15 years I spent learning my instrument, maintenance and insurance of that instrument and our equipment etc, plus the time we spent refining our band's set - which was HOURS.
I think it is much more accurate to call 'influencers' 'Content creators'. It more accurately describes what they do, whether that be art, videos or pictures, it is all content.
I feel like anyone who works their own hours gets called lazy and I am sick of it. It takes so much discipline ! Just because my work day starts at 4pm and ends at 2 am doesn't mean I just "sleep all day"
@@morehannah And I don't understand the early bird concept 😂 night time is just so Sweet, I need more of it ! (Hey, thank you for your work, I have loved watching your content these last 3 years ! ❤️)
I'm 2 mins in but also the reason I think the amount influencers get per post is justifiable (ish. sometimes) is because for every other post, we aren't getting paid. If we create content on Instagram every single day, and then get paid for one post a month, that could be like, our only income all month despite the fact we're putting out free content every single day. If that makes sense? It's not *why* the brand pays us so much, but it's why I think it's acceptable to earn so much per sponsored post
yes I totally get this, especially in relation to my TH-cam content. The amount of money I get from adsense doesn't cover my costs of making the videos + what I pay my editor. So I technically make a loss on every single video. 1 brand deal might cover the costs for 2 months of content!
Yes, planning Instagram posts takes a lot of time. I work for a small company and am responsible for social media. Planning a month of posts, with putting pictures in an order to make them look nice on the feed together, taking product shots, editing the pictures, and writing captions, takes me several days every month. But it’s a lot of fun and one of my favourite tasks to do ❤️
People really underestimate how tough it is being a freelancer. I work with a fair few freelancers & while it can be quite profitable the instability & uncertainty with work it seems like a bold lifestyle to have.
I think part of my problem is that when I watch you, I can clearly see that you're fully running a business and providing important valuable information for people who need it but then I also see people doing a haul promoting fast fashion even though they could afford to be more sustainable and then for the latter I dont respect youtuber as a job so much, more of a hobby 🤷♀️
I agree they should try to be more sustainable, but I think a big reason why a lot of them don't is that their viewers usually can't afford those more expensive brands. I know I've had that issue with watching TH-camrs who buy more expensive clothes. They'll link the clothes in their hauls, but I can't afford them
@@oliviamiller-davis4667 yeah of course, me too, at the moment my level of accessible sustainability is second hand shopping so I can see that there difficulties whichever way
Exactly! It's not like all influencers have no conscience. The ones I watch are clearly very aware of their, well, "influence". I have no issues with them. But many widely watched popular ones don't really care and are sometimes shady with their endorsements.
I've really liked both of these videos. Such interesting insight into a not very well understood profession! I wish more people would happily just openly tackle these misconceptions and actually explain how it works more often
My only thing would be that A lot of ppl, not just freelancers, aren't in a position where they are 'setting themselves up for retirement', either because they have been doing extensive study, or a mish mash of casual jobs etc
I am another influencer's Manc friend, so none of this was super surprising to me. I love these videos of yours though, because it helps me understand and support my friend better! The only influencer/social media content I consume is TH-cam subscriptions, and I add maybe 2-3 new channels to that stream over six months; so I'm not even really exposed as a consumer to my friend's life! Thank you for the interesting content, as always Hannah :)
This was absolutely FASCINATING, thank you Hannah for this 2-parter! :D The explanation about brand deals essentially paying for an audience/marketing over the actual content an 'influencer' makes, makes so much sense!!
Oh also, because I don't use social media I don't really have a way to send stuff to you, so here is probably the place you're most likely to see. I'd love to see a video about things that can happen/go wrong with your vulva that aren't serious problems or STIs. I get super dry skin all over and I never knew until recently that that's what's been making me so itchy, because I didn't know that was possible to get dry skin on a vulva and whenever I've tried to research it's really hard to find information that isn't about STIs or yeast/thrush or serious things like cancer (all of which doctors have ruled out for me.) It's also really hard to find stuff because hardly anyone uses the term vulva so when you're researching it's like "is this actually about vaginas or is it about vulvas???" I figured if I was having a hard time finding information like this, probably other followers of your channel could benefit too :) Thank you very much for everything you do, and especially thank you if you're able to put out some content on this topic!
I've definitely read some people in entertainment say that they were recommended to start youtube since it's good for practicing your craft, getting comfortable being on camera, working in front of an audience etc. Melanie's also talked many times about her struggles trying to get a mortgage and buying a home.
I think the word influencer applies more accurately to people who make a career out of their identity or image, like "Instagram models." I think it might also more accurately describe people who make exclusively trendy tiktoks.
Would you do a work week vlog? Like right now I'm working on Instagram pictures for x hours and now I'm filming for y hours, etc. I think it would be really interesting to see and if you did them every couple months ish to show how the workload varies week to week.
I am amazed at how much I learned while watching this video about the lives of "influencers" (yes the term makes me cringe too), on the surface things may seem easy, but content creators are human just like everyone else! People love to raise their expectations of their favorite content creators to the point of being unrealistic. I have noticed on platforms like Twitch where viewers will get angry if the streamer does not acknowledge them, the sense of entitlement is astounding
More Hannah It’s really difficult, the pressure to be “perfect” and never make any sorts of mistakes is huge. One thing that scares me is those who proudly claim being stans of a certain individual as part of their identity
I actually think it's a LITTLE funny that everyone hates the term "influencer" so much, because to me it actually makes sense, and isn't an insult at all. It describes what they are hiring you for (when they are paying you to advertise a product or service). Yes, the reason you have an audience is because you make videos or take photos. But if they were paying you for that products wouldn't be involved. Like, you are being paid to make videos if you sell video content, perhaps a subscription service or similar (TH-cam red? Patreon?) But brands are paying you to advertise. I guess because I'm a little older, and hail from the world that existed before the internet, I relate it to actors. If an actor is hired to act in a movie or TV show they are being paid to act. They are in that moment an actor. Even though the movie has product placement or the TV show has commercial breaks, that's advertising by association. But actors also get hired as "spokespeople" by a brand. Where they appear as themselves and recommend or discuss or try a product. That's been around for forever. Yes, they were hired to be a spokesperson BECAUSE they are a popular actor but they aren't being paid to act. They are being paid to be a spokesperson. So they are both. Not all actors get hired to be spokespeople, and not all spokespeople are actors. Not all video creators are influencers (maybe they don't do brand deals) and not all influencers make videos (maybe they post photos). There are video creators who also write books, and when asked they will proudly say both. But not all video creators write books. I think it's wrong for the public to try and only use one word to describe everyone the same, but also I think people dislike being called an influencer because they prefer saying they are an artist rather than work in advertising. It's sad to have ranted that much and not be sure you made any sense so I'll stop now. 😂🤷♀️
On a related note, I don't even watch instagram stories, because it rarely crosses my mind. I always forget that sometimes some youtubers use that social media for their brand.
I love getting your take on this. it's so interesting to get these opinions from someone on the "other side". Also, that first bit was just me justifying leaving this comment: I love your top, it's so pretty!
I feel like the "upset" that sometimes exists when comparing how much an influencer makes to a basic customer service/ office job is just asking the wrong questions. It's not that there isn't HUGE gaps in pay range between various industries, there really REALLY is (I've worked in both hotels and entertainment for example) but it's not necessarily that influencers are paid too much. It's that many MANY industries are severely underpaid (as in work vs fair compensation and pay vs cost of living). IMO 🤷♀️
Hey i know that you already did blog posts about what percentage of your income comes from where (patreon, sponsorship, adsense...). I would love to see how your income varies from month to month (in percentages). We love a good graph 😂😍
I've definitely stopped watching some TH-camrs because of no longer being relatable/brand deals changing their content. Like one travel couple I used to watch a lot. They went from more traditional millennial backpacking travel style to staying at all these luxury resorts and on fancy cruise ships. Not only is that not relatable for me, it's not the kind of travel I'm interested in.
4 Groups of friends!? I don't even have 1...Despite being the only one who tries to keep in contact i've lost all of them after school, college, uni etc...that would be a great video actually. How do influences have such strong social groups (e.g. like how to manage time between work and people).
The term "influencer" is equivalent to "celebrity", in my mind. A celebrity can be a movie star, pop star, model, footballer, etc. The celebrity part only refers to the fame aspect. Influencers are online celebrities, in a sense. That said, I don't like either term much...! 😀💝
I feel your pain with the trying to get a mortgage, honestly it was such a nightmare for me as a swimming twacher as we can only be contracted to the hours that go the whole way through the year so anything that is baby/toddler or p4 lessons (neither of which run during school holidays) can’t be contracted so pretty much every month is different and on top of that our contract is like 1/4 of our actual monthly hours which scares mortgage people away
More Hannah so true, most people wouldn’t even think of my job as that unconventional it’s simply because of how our bosses choose to do our hours/contracts!
Hi Hannah, I was just curious as to where you shop for your summer dresses etc, I’ve been struggling to find summer clothes that fit ‘everywhere’ not out of place. (I have a similar body type to you but tall) I’m aware bravissimo has clothes but it’s not quite in my budget (or style for an 18yr old) where would you suggest to look? ❤️
Thank you for this. It’s an interesting peek behind the curtain. One (genuine) question. I’m not on insta. Do you say when you have been paid to post about a brand? If not, is that your decision, the payer’s decision, bit of both or something else?
You have to say it's sponsored or if the items were gifted from the brand. It's illegal if you don't and you can get fined for repeat offenses. So if you don't say, you're breaking the law in the UK. Your audience has to know whether something is being pushed forward because of money or if it is just a genuine reccomendation. A lot of influencers got into trouble witb the law for not disclosing ads, sponsorships or gifted items.
I´m offered to create my own business with someone else and I´m a bit scared or unsure if freelancing is what I want/ will be good for me as a person who doesnt like risk but loves working independently. Any experiences from you guys? Would love to hear more stuff about making your own business

Yeah you make a very good point. Different industries have different costs and influencer marketing is part of the advertising industry so there’s a lot a potential there I guess.
I think another good argument is the potentially possible work hours. Yeh, an Instagram post may be ~1h of work, but you (presumably) cannot post 8 times per day either, so you're limited there, which makes it more valuable again
I have often thought that some “influencers do very little work for a lot of money a lot of people on internet are in it for the money don’t care for their fanbase and it show in their cough content

I think of it kinda like how you pay an artist like, say $50 (way to cheap but that's the internet, and the internet devalues artists) for a sketch that takes 10 minutes, one one hand yeah it's $300 an hour, but you aren't paying just for their time, you're paying for skill, you're paying for practice time, you're paying for art school often times.
