Sensational Hangry Fam! Every time I think, I've been to Kyoto a few times now, I don't need to go again, I realise we've only just scratched the surface. You've come up with the perfect intro to Kyoto! You were there before Japan re-opened right? Because it didn't look crowded at all. It looks like Kyoto 10 or 15 years ago - in winter 😂 If you want to see how crowded it got just before covid I have a couple of Kyoto vids now. You even had shots at Inari without any people. 😂 Amazing. But even as crowded AF I still couldn't recommend Kyoto more.

If you want to see the “real” geiko and maiko, you need to head to Gion around 5-6pm….that is the only time you’ll see them walking around the area.
That makes sense. We were in Gion in the middle of the day haha.
You’re also not supposed to film or take photos in that neighborhood….
I managed to see one around 3 am. Kyoto also has a center where they do performances. The performance includes different cultural performances, like a tea ceremony, Kabuki, and even a geisha performance. Just in case you don't want to miss seeing a real geisha

First off- Great tips and video!
Fun fact: Fushimi Inari is open 24/7 (the grounds) so if you go anytime after sunset it is considerably more quiet....be aware of when the last train leaves though or you might end up having to take an expensive taxi to get home. The lighting also isn't the greatest so carry a flashlight or two and some extra batteries. Finally realize that there will be no vendors open / nor will the shrine itself be open so you will not be able to purchase anything from them (charms, etc.) I would recommend either going TWICE once during the day and once at night OR going really early in the morning (depending on how far you want to hike) then when you come down you can enjoy the temple during the day.
Kyoto station is amazing. When I went in 2017 the stairs were not lighted (I guess I have to go back now lol), but I did go to the very top of the stairs as there is a rooftop "Happy Terrace" where there is a garden with bamboo, decent views of the trains coming and going as well as views of Kyoto Tower. Along the way you can see a complete lego version of Kyoto Station, unfortunately I don't recall what floor it was on other than it's not on the bottom floors.

I just did a 3-day trip to Kyoto. It can be done to cover the major attractions. It requires careful planning. 1) maximize the day by going to the sites that open early in the morning (Arashiyama bamboo forest opens all day); 2) need to have ample cash because Japanese bank ATMs do not accept most foreign bank cards. One can get cash from 7-11 with hefty fee; 3) sign up for Suica pass on one's smartphone if one plans to use public transportation; 4) try to stay around the Kyoto station region if you plan on using public transportation because bus, train and subway all go through that station.
This was my itinerary: day1 morning - Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji, Katsura River and bridge, day1 afternoon - Ginkaku-ji, Ryoan-ji; day2 morning - Ginkaku-ji, Philosopher's path, Nanzen-ji, Water Bridge, day2 afternoon Kiyomizu-dera and the shops along the Sanneizaka and Nineizaka; day3 morning - Fushimi Inari Taisha. Pick out a few more sites one wants to visit in case if time permits.
At night, one can visit Yasaka Shrine and the Gion region. There are plenty of restaurants in the region boxed between Sanjo (#3) and Shijo (#4) bridges on both sides of the river banks.

Thanks so much 😊 The first time we visited Kyoto, we rented an electric bicycle for 5 days, and this time, we rented one for 2 days. It's definitely super easy to cycle everywhere, it's just that you can't park your bicycle in many places. You have to find bike parking (usually paid in popular tourist areas).

I've been following your channel for a while as I was planning a trip to Japan last year but I had to postpone it for this year due to covid. I have 3 kids (6,4 and 1 year old) and I am a bit scared to travel to Japan with kids especially because I want to do so many things but if my kids are tired are throwing tantrums! I am contemplating doing like 4-5 days alone with my wife and then my kids with their grandma can join later on for an easier itinerary.
Great to hear you have a chance to go with your wife! Japan is awesome place for all types of travelers. With kids, it is harder to get through a lot and also trying to keep them entertained for more adult activities like temples. Have fun on your trip and hopefully it'll work out for you. ✌️🥳

Hi Charles and thanks for subscribing! I think my best advice would be to go on tour from Osaka to get most of those things you want done. I know Klook has these one day tours like what we mentioned in this video. Here's a link for example and it also leaves from Osaka.

I wouldn't recommend getting a taxi as they are quite expensive in Japan. A tour will also make it easier traveling with your mom as it covers transports, getting around with a guide and tour is sorted for you.

With toddles (3 and 6) how do you suggest getting around Kyoto? I am thinking of just paying the extra costs and taxing everywhere.
Taxis can get quite expensive. Riding bikes around is a good option. You can find bike rental places that provide kids seats too. Otherwise public transport is also ok to use. Just use Google maps to help you navigate them. It lets you know the timing, which ones to catch and how much. Hope that helps.
Love the vid - I'm looking at staying at the Mecure Kyoto, the hotel you stayed in. It looks like they only allow for one child per room, when you stayed did you have to get two rooms or is there a way to get two young children into the one room? Thanks!

Did you get the Sagano romantic train from Arashiyama station to Kameoka station? Because it seems like you're getting away from Kinkaku-Ji.
Can you rent the bikes without a local phone number? I've found that difficult in the past.

Haha yes this was in the middle of summer, hence why we were dripping with sweat throughout this entire itinerary. It's never too cold for ice cream tho!

Hey as someone who is going to japan for the first time, i want to stop by kichi kichi omurice, how do i score a reservation? On the actual kichi kichi website their reservation system only lets you book 4 weeks im advance but my trip is in about 2 months , everything also looks booked so it seems kinda hard to get a reservation
Hey there! It's a tiny restaurant with very minimal spots, we gave up on trying to reserve as well and took our chances on a weeknight to stand in line and wait. We just went early and queued up, luckily they were able to accommodate us. Sorry we don't have any better advice!

Thanks for watching! We did mention we used rental bikes in the video. The activities are pretty scattered around Kyoto. The best way to tackle this is to use google maps app and it'll show the best route with which train or bus depending on the location. Also the timings and possible walking required. Hope that helps.

I think for us, for easy packing is nicer weather during either spring or autumn. Just make sure to avoid any holiday times during then especially spring because it gets insanely busy for golden week, cherry blossom time and spring break. Also around the world school holiday time i think Easter is then too.

Hi Diana, thanks for watching! You can use klook to book the train and as for the bikes, there are a lot of bike parking spots. Some of the are free and some are paid spots (really cheap). You can get a map of them from the bike provider or google maps. Returning is usually where you pick it up from.

Good observations! We went when it was summer, August/September. It was really hot and humid. From memory when we went in May a couple of years ago, you could go pants and tshirt most of the time. Some days could go with shorts when it got warmer.

You can't pay in dollars in Japan. You'll have to exchange your currency to Yen or simply just withdraw using your card at 7 Eleven ATMs and you'll get Yen.
