Ive just ordered owners ball bearing swivels (TT52) (Owner Cultiva on the packaging) These have a solid ring inside the bottom ring of the swivel which gets welded shut. The sizes 00 up to 5 are from 20 lb test up to 400 plus lb test. These used on the front of jig attachment allow a direct connection of assist hk/hks to mainline AND introducing a swivel avoiding line twist on the ascent. I like these because you dont need to rely on a split ring connection between hk & swivel (I got the size 5 for bluefin tuna to pair with a single 7/0 BKK assist hks on 300 lb test doubled kevlar assist cord at front of jig. In this way I can make my own abrasion leaders (2.5 ft & 200 lb test mono crimped) & leave the hk & swivel attached to the leader allowing change out of jig only (& its rear hk with a HD split ring 320 lb & up) when things need to happen quickly. An alternative would be a swivel at top of abrasion leader with a solid ring placed in leaders bottom loop b4 crimping - after - chafe guarding. Really great topic as there are so many videos on technique but few on the very specific instruction of proper rigging & terminal tackle. Also plan to add TN knot at topshot to abrasion ldr connection instead of jansek special or improved clinch knot. The subject of knots specific to slow pitch jigging because of the lg # of connection types involved would be a really great subject for a video - where to use each & why.

For those who don't have the proper pliers (like myself) a straight jewelers screwdriver, like what is in your eyeglass repair kit, will also work to open the rings. Much MUCH easier to use the proper tools though, thank you ladies!

    1. Near shore fishing ideas for introducing kids to fishing.
    2. Catching bay shrimp for kids.
    3. Seasonal fish movement. Pelagics, red grouper, gag grouper, mangrove snapper, etc... Perhaps species by species segments.
    4. Strategies for catching fish on slow days when normally productive spots fail and bait stacks no longer found.
    5. Criteria (i.e. wave height, wave frequency, wind) and resources for making go/no go offshore trip decisions.
    6. Offshore fuel and distance planning. i.e. fuel consumption & 30% fuel reserve.
    7. Understanding rod, reel, line weight pairing when buying a new rig.
    8. How to best utilize VHF radio channels for weather, emergency, talking to friends.
    9. Understanding of how to understand complex FWC saltwater seasons including local versus federal waters, size limits, regulation updates(fishrules app). Review seasonal gulf coast 20 fathom closure (120ft).
    10. How to choose a fishing charter service.

Here in California, most rig flat falls / spj a bit different. 1) Because we can only use two hooks when rockfishing, we usually just do the one side. 2) Quite a few tie line to the solid ring, not the split ring and not using a swivel. It happen rarely, but split rings can and do open under load. Some folks use them for flat falls for pelagics like BFT or YFT - which can put a strain on the rings - why take the chance...

one debatable point is that some anglers claim ball bearing swivels cause spinning of the slow jigs and hinder their horizontal pause cause them keep spinning and loose action. so they prefer keep using solid rings for slow pitch jigging. is that the case?

There is one important point to position the assist hook on the flat side of the jig for spj (which is correct in your video). When it flutters down, the flat side will be on top thus the assist hooks.

@@peterk814 well, I've fished long enough (Crystal River guy here, now in TX), to know it's mostly personal preference. In general just consider these things: 1. Are you using a spinning reel, if so, swivels are not a bad idea. 2. For straight down vertical jigging on a conventional reel, I'd opt-out of the swivel, if I used a spinning reel, I would do what this gal is showing in a heart beat. 3. Consider also the design of your lure and it's action. For example, when I used to use my old trusty Johnson Sprite Gold spoon on the flats for red fish, I could catch reds all day long w/o a swivel, but with a swivel my hook-up rate would plummet. Just my 2-cents. GO GATORS!
