Great review Bob. I also like this knife a lot. Quick tip: to prevent the knife from rolling away you can keep the safety cap on at the back of the handle. I am not sure it was designed this way but it fits and helps to keep the knife in place.
I got lucky about 4 years back and got several of these in the clearance bin of Joan's. Still put them to good use today each equipped with a specific blade doing plastic scale models.
Since experiencing that type of rubber grips on pens, I absolutely love them, by far my fav type of grip and having it on a quality hobby knife then it can only be a great addition, I also much prefer a steel product given its not adding to the terrible environmental impact that plastic offers our world. Thanks for the review, it will be my choice. I also really like that it comes with the cap on it so I can keep it in with my paint brushes or pens without the risk of either dulling the blade or stabbing myself with having it exposed or worse, in a draw where its a pain to get out to use on a regular basis.
Just picked mine up today at Target for under $4! But... first use the blade slid out and I can’t quite tell exactly how it’s supposed to sit in there. I untwisted everything and got the blade back in, but it just gets crooked during use. Any tips?
Really the only retractable knives similar to this are the Utility or stanley knives, otherwise you can only really rely on the cap if they have one or storing it safely away, the latter not a preferable option in my opinion.
@@bulldawg6259 yeah excel makes a nice retractable pen I almost bought for $9, only caveat is you have to spend around $3-4 for blade replacements as they're proprietary. not sure how many sharpenings you could get out of them, either, as they're so small.
I'd just get one of those wide rubber bands like you find on vegetables at the supermarket to keep it from rolling. My problem is the cap on this knife is the worst, an accident waiting to happen. They should have used a threaded plastic cap like any cheap fountain pen uses.
I have also had an issue with the blade staying secure after changing and was disappointed that this video didn't cover how to properly change the blade but I found a video that does discuss that here: th-cam.com/video/R_HLkx3mZBo/w-d-xo.html
+mike breazeale You could probably find the FISKARS knives in some hobby shops, but they're more commonly available in craft stores. If you have a Hobby Lobby or Michaels near you, they probably sell the knives. Same for the Olfa blades. A little harder to find, but well worth the search. Thanks for watching the vid Mike. :)
i bought this at michaels but i cant seem to get the blades out. the blades are dull compared to the z series exacto blades. n i wish there was more weight close to the blade.
At the time I shot the video, I was blanking on what I'd paid for each knife. In my mind, they're worth far more than what they sell for, but I too used a coupon, and probably only paid five or six dollars.
If it can use OLFA blades, I'm sure it would be alright. I like trying new tools, but I think I've finally found my ultimate hobby knife. I'm using the Fiskars scissors now, and they're quite good too.
I was disappointed in how poorly mine holds it's blade. I can fix it, but the design could also be easily changed such that it'd hold the blade better.
You spent too much time (5 mins) talking about 'other' knives and didn't even show how to change the blade in the Fiskars - which would be really useful, so sorry a thumbs down for me.
Chabge the blade Turn the metallhandle clockwise Pull down the orange gum Pull off the blade best by tongs. Put in the new blade also by tongs pull up the orange gum and turn the metallhandle counterclockwise
fiskers hobby knife is junk, and this review is terrible. Right out of the package the blade fell out and can't put it back in...very dangerous poor product...notice the knife isn't used in the review
Well then you got a dodgy example, mine is extremely secure, I even tried pulling on the blade probably ill-advised but it held strong. Perhaps the ratchet part needs tightening on yours by twisting the orange grip?

Great review Rob. Sorry for misspelling your name.

Put a small screw in the handle for anti rolling feature or dab of hot glue even easier, works great.

Brick Haus my exact problem!!!
Mary Lou Mattioli I never did figure it out.
Same problem.
You would think it would come with instructions on that🙄
How to tighten the blade, my first search with word "Hobby" getting closer
I'm an old tool and die maker I can't find a retractable pencil type knife can you advise me where to look?

Excel makes a nice retractable.
Thanks

I can’t figure out hot to switch the blade on these and it always slides to the side. Any tips?
Great review on the knife and blades. Where do you get these items? Thanks for sharing...

Never thought I would find myself watching a video about xacto knives
Edit: I got mine for 5 Canadian dollars at Walmart
i bought this at michaels but i cant seem to get the blades out. the blades are dull compared to the z series exacto blades. n i wish there was more weight close to the blade.
oh n thats ecpensive man. i only got mine for $6 canadian at michaels.$5 if there was a 50% off coupon
I use nothing but OLFA blades in my FISKARS knifes now. It's seems to be the best combination.

i ended up getting the blade out, i just lifted the top part with force. is that the right way? i might cut myself if i have to do that everytime.
DUDE, it`s a hobby knife. It`s worth about $1 not including tax.
how do you change the blade?
twist the grip like Exacto
Kwago I can’t get it back in right .. now it moves
I have ordered the Fiskars hobby knife but, Which Olfa blade do you suggest?
So how do you change the blade?
Twist the barrel and pull the blade out. The cap is also really hard to remove.
what do you think about the fiskars soft grip detail knife?
If it can use OLFA blades, I'm sure it would be alright. I like trying new tools, but I think I've finally found my ultimate hobby knife. I'm using the Fiskars scissors now, and they're quite good too.
I was just curious cus the shape is not the typical hobby knife. From looking at the picture, its flat and has a curve on one side.
I was disappointed in how poorly mine holds it's blade. I can fix it, but the design could also be easily changed such that it'd hold the blade better.
Horrible product, don't waste your money, they are heavy and blade slips too much
Put the cap on the end of the Fiskars and it won’t roll
What a terrible video. He doesn't even show how to take the blade out and put a new one in.
Actually is a bad review, why? because you didn't really do anything withit to test the comfort of using it to carve or do crafts.
You spent too much time (5 mins) talking about 'other' knives and didn't even show how to change the blade in the Fiskars - which would be really useful, so sorry a thumbs down for me.

Turn the metallhandle clockwise
Pull down the orange gum

Agreed! POS Knife. No matter how tight I twist the blade keeps falling out!
