    I highly recommend Buffalo Trace
    It is a 100% sipper at a mixer price point.

      Quentin Zusatz They are about the same price here in Washington state. I am a big Wild Turkey 101 fan. But at times the mellower Buffalo Trace sounds good. I buy both. But for $50 I would never buy it

      You are absolutely right! I had few bottles of Buffalo last summer in our summercabin and they really made my (and my friend) evenings worth of living..:) Bulleit is also good but very different, it´s taste is strong while Buffalo is smooth and easy to drink.

    Two years later, just discovered your channel. Great stuff! I prefer Buffalo Trace as an everyday whisky, but in my opinion Bulleit has more interesting flavours to taste. However Buffalo Trace is thicker with a better mouthfeel. Then again BT is "woody" and that leads to a drier finish than Bulleit. Both are great.

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you found me! My preference has moved over time too. I enjoy both, but find more people I share with prefer the sweet, coating BT over the spicier Bulleit. Cheers!

    For me, definitely Buffalo Trace is far superior. I drink neat. It is very smooth but interesting. Fuller in the mouth. Bulleit tastes cheaper, thinner and younger, though the peppery kick is quite nice. I think a drop of water helps smooth it out and bring out more subtleties.

    • @WhiskyNeighbour

    I do really love Buffalo Trace. Now in 2019, it's getting tricky to find any of the distillery's products. For the price I really don't think you can beat it. While watching this I just finished a bottle and now I'm having a store select of one of their bottles. SO tasty!

    I recently got both Bulleit and Buffalo Trace. I used to drink Makers Mark and Buffalo trace and liked them both until I got chemical burns from Makers mark, oddly other whiskeys didn't give me the same chemical burn effect as Makers (erven high proof stuff) so I got out of bourbon for a while but have recently got back into it. I got some on sale whiskeys like plain old wild Turkey and while I did not care for it as a sipper, it was amazing as a mixer with Ginger ale.... so I've been starting to experiment again.
    I've gone into some Rare Breed and loved it (had to water or ice it to really bring out the smell and flavor but now its amazing) Knob Creek is ok but when I have Wild Turkey first and go to Knob Creek 9 a bit after, it's soooo much better not sure why. I tried Bulleit and hated it as a sipper but really love it mixed with Ginger ale... So I like a bit sweeter Bourbon and figured I'd try Buffalo Trace again as it was on sale but I find it way to weak now straight and it seems to be missing something even straight... it also doesn't mix well with anything as its washed out... I don't think I'd ever keep Buffalo Trace anymore but Bulleit, while not my favorite sipper, it is amazing mixed with anything, the rye helps a little, it has a stronger bourbon taste and it even feels like it has more kick. I don't know how I can really enjoy BT anymore.... perhaps I got a bad bottle???
    Rare breed though with a bit of ice or water really comes alive, it has a super mouth feel (much thicker feeling) and the flavor is more complex and I love the crème Brule'/vanilla notes I get from it, straight the proof kind of kills the nose and taste but a tiny bit of water wakes it all up ... I've found Craft Cellars in Calgary have Rare Breed on for $39.99, so I think I'm going to get another.. that is something like 40% off!!!

    As a complete rookie to bourbon (and whisky in general), I find Buffalo Trace similar to a Canadian whisky in regards to sweetness and gentleness on the nose. That being said, I would love a video on how you develop and learn how to smell and taste a whisky! Cheers for another great video. I enjoy Makers and also Bulleit Rye, though that one is a bit rough or the alcohol is forward. I like the regular Knob Creek 9 year old, but I would not rate it higher than Buffalo Trace. I would rate the "single barrel" version fairly high and do pay more for it to keep it on the shelf. WT 101 is good, but I would look for a sale. • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frontier is their Bourbon, so it is made from a high Rye mashbill. Likely 68% Corn, 28% Rye, 4% Barley. Bulleit Rye is 95% Rye, 5% Barley. The Rye is more cracked pepper and some grass or herb notes.

      @@WhiskyNeighbour Personally I don't like paying more than $25 for bourbon, especially considering how cheap it is down in the States. But there's something about the taste of bourbon that has that certain unique kick in taste that other whiskies do not have. I don't what it is, bourbon always has that extra kick in taste ever since the first time I tasted it, Crown Royal and Canadian Club don't have it and neither does Jack Daniels.

      A bit different with everyone and their taste preference. I would say start using it in your favourite cocktails, but those that are simple and mostly whisky. Like an Old Fashioned. Then just over ice and small sips. Also, come back to it after a while and you may find you have warmed to it.

    Buffalo Trace is very hard to find these days in Maryland, USA. Had to get on a waitlist at one of the local sellers to even have a chance. I just tried Bulleit for the first time yesterday and really liked it. I'm new to bourbon, so I'm still figuring out what I think is good and what I can taste. I got a real good cinammon finish from the Bulleit, is that the rye? If so, maybe I'll need to try more of that style.

      I like the idea of letting it rest, a minute in the glass for every year. Rolling in the mouth? I am not sure. Certainly give it time, and several sips. More with age, bit l am not sure of making that a rule.

      @@WhiskyNeighbour Yeah good review despite all the mess in the background sound wise (I felt for you !)..my first Bourbon was Maker's Mark, then to answer your question regular Four Roses, Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select (but it seems to have changed a lot, not necessarily for better), Jim Beam Double Black, stuff like that...I still remember a Bourbon I liked a lot called Johnny Drum but that I struggle to find now, but you'll be surprised some of my favorite American whiskeys can't be called Bourbons (Michter's Unblended American Whiskey & Sour Mash are 2 "luxury entry level" whiskies that are for me super well crafted, even if it is sourced they nailed it with those). I also started with Blanton's Special Reserve but I quickly found it a bit weak compared to the Original & even more to my 2012 stunning Gold Edition I still have & to the SFTB...I still have a lot of samples from friends to try, entry level ones but also some high end stuff as well, just want to give them the best opportunity to shine & take decent notes, not knock em down quickly in a live show or else...I have to say also that 2018 for me was a revelation about what Rye whiskies could bring on the table & especially Canadian ones, with great tasting opportunities (samples sent by a generous guy from Oakville) & great meetings too (Don Livermore, of course, in a show but also in my flat to do a Live show), and there'll be more to come about it on my channel soon, btw 😉 Other than that within a month or two I'll have a great story to tell with (spoiler) how Canadian Rye did influence me while blending a French whisky for real (at a distillery) that will be released soon here....

I thought my tastes had changed and that I now preferred Scotch. That first glass made me think maybe I need to re try bourbon. It turn out that I had been missing out for a number of years. A few weeks ago I tasted some Maker´s Mark and my whole point of view changed... until I had some Bulleit. Never tried Buffalo Trace, but I will give it a chance. Blanton Single Barrel is also good, but in my humble opinion, Bulleit tastes better - shoot me for that, but that´s what I think about that. How do these compare to wild turkey

    • @WhiskyNeighbour
      @WhiskyNeighbour  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      dylan dewalt I would say, BT is smoother and a little sweeter. Bulleit has a little more flavour and spice, but lacks that sour edge that many people like in Wild Turkey. I am not a big Wild Turkey fan though, so no doubt I am biased.

      Richard Nelson - Happy belated birthday!!
      In my experience, Buffalo Trace really benefits from adding a little bit of water and letting it sit for five minutes or so. It's like all of the flavor that's locked within is set free to dance on your tongue.

    Hey, nice review. Where are you in Canada ? I'm in Québec and Buffalo Trace is 43$ and I bought a Bulleit bottle on sale for 35$. It's my first ever Bourbon and I'm really enjoying it so far!

      @@WhiskyNeighbour Ok cool! I'll definitely want to try Buffalo Trace at some point in the future. But I was planning on trying Maker's Mark next. It is sold at 39$ for the 750 ml bottle and I've seen very good reviews on it. Have you tried it ?

    • @WhiskyNeighbour

      @@drax14QC yes! Many people enjoy MM. I do too, but not my favorite. For wheated, I like Weller's a little more. I also enjoy Elijah Craig a lot, but it can be pricey. I good value is Wild Turkey 101. It has a sour note that can out some people off, but great for the price usually.

      Mark Antony Neil Bulleit Rye! I like that too, but most find it rough or alcohol forward. I think that one also holds up well in cocktails. Sadly I can only get 4 Roses yellow label around here and not any of their small batch or single barrel I here so much about.

    Started my bourbon journey with Buffalo Trace, and I liked it, but wanted to try others too. After many great bourbons Buffalo Trace is still my favourite for the price. I came from Japanese and Irish whiskys, and I have to admit now that I really like bourbons too, and not only bourbons, but Rye too. Bulleit Rye is definitely a nice whiskey, sweet and spicy at the same time, fresh and well balanced.
