Great video as usual! I think for the sky I would use ultramarine blue with the alizarin crimson...the phthalo blue is warmer, so the result would not be so saturated! But that's what makes everyone unique because it's art! An artist won't make the same choice twice! Thank you for those nice calm videos and paintings!

Hi Paul! This video’s intro is the BEST!! Your humor is great! I really appreciate the tip of removing excess paint with your finger. I usually scrape off with a palette knife, but this is better! I love the way the mountains look soft. Very cool! Reminds me of how I attempted highlights on rocks. I over painted them, so I tried again. Your top tips are sinking in. So grateful! This April will be my first “paintiversary”! I like that new word! I was so glad this video has really great video angles of how to paint evergreens. Mine are improving, thanks to you! I also like the way you tap the one inch brush on the side when making misty effects under the mountains. It seems like you can see how much you’re tapping better that way. Hi Stephanie - the intro was a bit of fun. I don't know where it comes from! You hit the nail on the head with the top tips sinking in. I watched Bob over and over until the technique became automatic. This gave me the confidence to experiment and finess a style of my own. All part of the journey. A paintiversary sounds wonderful. Its good to mark the day. Maybe pull out one or two from the beginning and see how far you've come 😃😍 Lots more tutorials to come. Terri and the fur babies say hi and happy new painting year 😃😍😎
Paul, I must say I really like the brush mountains in your video! They actually look more natural. The bushes with the filbert brush look awesome as well. As usual, great video. Your tips are very helpful and more people need to watch this.

I've been a subscriber for awhile and I watch you through my Xbox X whixh, for some reason, will not allow me to comment so I joined up on my phone to tell you that you are amazing. I love your style and your soft, gentle way of teaching. I was diagnosed with cancer awhile back and taking a Bob ross class was a bucket list kind of thing. To the utter amazement of the doctors, I survived the cancer and though it has returned once, I have managed to fight it off again. I am addicted to painting now and I've watched many TH-cam instructors. I have to say, hands down, you're the best! Please, keep up the good work! Also, I feel the need to drop a word of advice for you painters out there. "Beat the devil out of it" was one of Bob's catch phrases. In my studies of cancer, I have learned that this is a very dangerous method of brush cleaning and may have been a contributor to Mr. Ross's illness. Those are deadly chemicals to breathe in and the act of beating out a brush will actually atomize the solution into a fine mist that then floats around and easily inhaled indoors or outdoors if downwind. This is in no way to inpugn the memory of Bob Ross who, by all accounts and people who knew him personally, was a fine and decent man. Again, keep up the good work! You are an extremely affable, effective teacher. 😊

Paul! Thank you for always following up with me. The photo in question is an amazing sunset at the mudflats on the Long Island Sound in up state NY. There was virtually no light to work with. But I stood there nonetheless for about 30 minutes without moving, taking a shot every few minutes using a single lens in the ambient light. There are 7 photos in the series. The wonderful thing about it is the seemingly singular color scheme (varying degrees of lavender actually) throughout. I managed to get what I believe to be the baseline color by blending ultramarine and burnt sienna. (Who knew?) The bottom 3rd is the reflected light of the scene above so it’s definitely not familiar territory for me despite the fact I took the original photo. Notwithstanding the lack of light, the entire picture looks to be nothing more than a series of straight horizontal lines. And yet, following your advice using my brush as a measuring device, as well as pins denoting the horizon line, I still can’t quite grasp the contours of the photo. I suppose what I’m getting at is my complete inability to place the various lines on my canvas so that it makes any kind of sense. Any suggestions? Any videos of your work that you can recommend? Cheers!
KInd of ticky without seeing the photos. Can you find the link to my Insta in my 'About' header and message me there. Yes, Ultramarine and Burnt Sienna makes the most stunning range of colours. Its a staple of watercolourists for soft skies. I often use it for my underpainting too ( there are a few videos where I use this) When I see the photos I might have a better chance of coming up with a solution - emphasis on the 'might' BTW 😉😎
Paul, being new to the whole painting genre, I’ve decided to take the plunge and graduate from acrylics to oils. The inspiration for this move should be obvious. I’ve also picked up a nifty 4-pack of the Bob Ross liquid line you mention so often. Despite what they say on the internet, I just don’t see much in the way of similarities between my acrylic work and the oils I’ve been familiarizing myself with. My end product just isn’t the same. Well, wish me luck!!
Oh Paul, I had no idea about the YT grab! While a cup of coffee can’t begin to express my thanks, I suppose it’s what we have to work with…in moderation. I 😢want to tell you how happy my wife is to see me back on the creative saddle. ❤ I was a photographer but I had to leave it go for a touch of illness. I’m actually looking forward to painting some of my own work. But we’ve got lots to do before then my friend. 😅
Absolutly fine Robin. I appreciate YT have to finance the website. I just find it goes against the grain when they zap the kind donations from supports like yourself. Hence the coffee cup. The 'fee' is a few pennies and the majority can go into the painting supplies. I'm delighted the hear your creative muscles are being given a work out. I have had quite a few photographers also picking up the brushes to transform photo into painting. Just remember - not every photograph makes a good painting! Just a tip I picked up along the way. Thank you for this tutorial, Paul. I really enjoy your videos as they are so very helpful! I'm just getting back into painting after years away from it and it's almost like starting over. How do you avoid streaks when painting in your sky and foreground? I always seem to get streaks that are hard to blend out. I also have the hardest time with my midground layering and making it look realistic.
Hi Duane - do these streaks happen when using liquid clear or just liquid white? Most times it down to having a little too much clear causing puddling in the tooth of the canvas. In liquid white its down to having a nice soft brush and blending the living daylights out of it. I spend 10 mins sometimes just on that step. As I mentioned. Theres nothing worse than standing back after a lovely days painting and seeing a deck chair!😃😎
@@PaulRansonArt I've been getting the streaks using liquid white. I have been taking your advice to check the canvas when applying but I may still be adding a little too much. You're right, after a lot of blending the streaks go away. I thought it was something I was doing wrong by not loading my brush thoroughly. Thank you for your response.
Thanks yet again for a great video, Paul. I see you mix your mountain colors by hand. Do you have an opinion on the BR color Mountain Mixture? Also, I love the silly bits. May I ask a production question? How long it takes you to put together a typical video like this? We see about 30 minutes but I'm willing to guess it takes many hours.
Hi Brad - I have a couple of tubes of BR Mt. Mix but its a little too blue for some paintings. I usually use this and add a little black to tone it down. But I'm old school we didn't have Mt. Mix when I trained as an instructor. As for the time it takes to produce a video well lets just say ... too long! The painting takes 28 mins. I spend the rest of the week laughing at my stupidity and trying to a make a video out of it. So the answer is 6 days 28 mins! 😂😎

Thank you so much Paul. I’m not sure how to tell if a photo is appropriate for painting. I have a quite spectacular one of a sunset off the Long Island sound. And while it appears paintable to me, I’ve had to stop working it because it’s actually fairly complex. If you could recommend any information on painting from photos I’d be grateful.
Hi Robin - yes, deciding what photos would translate into a good painting takes time. With practice ( as you're finding out ) some photos are more complex than at first sight. My top tip is to pick a photo with maybe one clear focal point i.e. a waterfall, tree, etc and build a painting around that. Spend your time on the focal point. The rest of the scene (whilst important) are like the backing vocals for the star performer. They can be moved or left out to suit. This approach might help limit the feeling of being overwhelmed part way through a painting. One last thing. Use the photo for inspiration. Just inspiration. You don't have to marry it! 😍😎- Paul
I just found your channel and I am so glad I did! I appreciate all the tips. 😄 Is it possible to paint over a wet on wet painting that you didn't finish before it dried? Or to completely cover an old painting?
Hi I'm glad you ran across me too! The subject of picking up on a partly completed painting is a tricky one. In my experience once the painting has started to dry a little its difficult to pick up and continue things like reflections where you need a nice amount of wet to pull down. If its drying then the results are often dissapointing. In that case I suggest leaving the painting for a few more days until its touch dry and then reapplying liquid white / clear as needed. But if you've progressed to say foreground bushes then working on a tacky painting is just fine. But there are many other situations where a blend of the two approaches might be needed. I found a way to practice without dragging out the palet knives ! For the guys when you shave with a razor and cream ! You hold you razor with index finger and thumb and run that down your face ! I'm going to shave my face like this from now on...lol Its great when I put after shave on my face I'm not doing the McNally Calkins holding my face and screaming..😜🤪😉😁
Great idea Jeff - if it dosent work just grow a beard. And if any one passed a comment say its Bob Ross' fault 😃p.s. rumour has it Van Gough tried this technique .... things didn't end well for him.

Hello Paul! Thank you as always for your beautiful work and always much anticipated videos. I’m wondering if you would have any interest in putting your unique take on BR’s Snowbound Cabin painting. I hesitate to ask this request since you probably get so many requests. That painting is one of my top BR faves during the winter, however I always thought that it was a bit somber that he made the cabin appear abandoned. We live in Maine, and love our cozy winters and dream of a remote cabin with a fireplace, thus painting a warm glow in the windows implying that people/someone is home. Just my two cents. Looking forward to this weeks video, btw!

I have had quite a few photographers also picking up the brushes to transform photo into painting. Just remember - not every photograph makes a good painting! Just a tip I picked up along the way. Thank you for this tutorial, Paul. I really enjoy your videos as they are so very helpful! I'm just getting back into painting after years away from it and it's almost like starting over. How do you avoid streaks when painting in your sky and foreground? I always seem to get streaks that are hard to blend out. I also have the hardest time with my midground layering and making it look realistic.
Hi Duane - do these streaks happen when using liquid clear or just liquid white? Most times it down to having a little too much clear causing puddling in the tooth of the canvas. In liquid white its down to having a nice soft brush and blending the living daylights out of it. I spend 10 mins sometimes just on that step. As I mentioned. Theres nothing worse than standing back after a lovely days painting and seeing a deck chair!😃😎
@@PaulRansonArt I've been getting the streaks using liquid white. I have been taking your advice to check the canvas when applying but I may still be adding a little too much. You're right, after a lot of blending the streaks go away. I thought it was something I was doing wrong by not loading my brush thoroughly. Thank you for your response.
Thanks yet again for a great video, Paul. I see you mix your mountain colors by hand. Do you have an opinion on the BR color Mountain Mixture? Also, I love the silly bits. May I ask a production question? How long it takes you to put together a typical video like this? We see about 30 minutes but I'm willing to guess it takes many hours.
Hi Brad - I have a couple of tubes of BR Mt. Mix but its a little too blue for some paintings. I usually use this and add a little black to tone it down. But I'm old school we didn't have Mt. Mix when I trained as an instructor. As for the time it takes to produce a video well lets just say ... too long! The painting takes 28 mins. I spend the rest of the week laughing at my stupidity and trying to a make a video out of it. So the answer is 6 days 28 mins! 😂😎

Thank you so much Paul. I’m not sure how to tell if a photo is appropriate for painting. I have a quite spectacular one of a sunset off the Long Island sound. And while it appears paintable to me, I’ve had to stop working it because it’s actually fairly complex. If you could recommend any information on painting from photos I’d be grateful.
Hi Robin - yes, deciding what photos would translate into a good painting takes time. With practice ( as you're finding out ) some photos are more complex than at first sight. My top tip is to pick a photo with maybe one clear focal point i.e. a waterfall, tree, etc and build a painting around that. Spend your time on the focal point. The rest of the scene (whilst important) are like the backing vocals for the star performer. They can be moved or left out to suit. This approach might help limit the feeling of being overwhelmed part way through a painting. One last thing. Use the photo for inspiration. Just inspiration. You don't have to marry it! 😍😎- Paul
I just found your channel and I am so glad I did! I appreciate all the tips. 😄 Is it possible to paint over a wet on wet painting that you didn't finish before it dried? Or to completely cover an old painting?
Hi I'm glad you ran across me too! The subject of picking up on a partly completed painting is a tricky one. In my experience once the painting has started to dry a little its difficult to pick up and continue things like reflections where you need a nice amount of wet to pull down. If its drying then the results are often dissapointing. In that case I suggest leaving the painting for a few more days until its touch dry and then reapplying liquid white / clear as needed. But if you've progressed to say foreground bushes then working on a tacky painting is just fine. But there are many other situations where a blend of the two approaches might be needed. I found a way to practice without dragging out the palet knives !
For the guys when you shave with a razor and cream !
You hold you razor with index finger and thumb and run that down your face ! I'm going to shave my face like this from now on...lol
Its great when I put after shave on my face I'm not doing the McNally Calkins holding my face and screaming..😜🤪😉😁

Hi Liam - the trees pick up a hint of green from the sky which is fine for a tree of course. Not so good for some other features. Paul 😃

Hello Paul! Thank you as always for your beautiful work and always much anticipated videos. I’m wondering if you would have any interest in putting your unique take on BR’s Snowbound Cabin painting. I hesitate to ask this request since you probably get so many requests. That painting is one of my top BR faves during the winter, however I always thought that it was a bit somber that he made the cabin appear abandoned. We live in Maine, and love our cozy winters and dream of a remote cabin with a fireplace, thus painting a warm glow in the windows implying that people/someone is home. Just my two cents. Looking forward to this weeks video, btw!
