    You ought to copyright your Mahl Stick invention. I like the painting. I too am straying from the complete Bob Ross technique and adopting more conventional methods. The Bob Ross method remains a great way to START a painting, but your method has more appeal. Thanks for demonstrating a great painting. Varnished, and framed, this would make a wonderful addition to your living room wall.

      If only! I think I missed the boat on that by a few hundred years - the Dutch were using them in the 1500's. I'm pleased to hear your expanding your techniques. I know that Bob saw his role very much as the stepping on point for complete beginners to oils. I have quite a few in line for the living room wall too. In fact I searched through a big pile of paintings hunting for a particular one. An hour later I was still there looking through them like one does with a photograph album. Happy days - Happy Painting - Paul

    Great video as usual! I think for the sky I would use ultramarine blue with the alizarin crimson...the phthalo blue is warmer, so the result would not be so saturated! But that's what makes everyone unique because it's art! An artist won't make the same choice twice! Thank you for those nice calm videos and paintings!

    Paul, some direction please. I watched a tutorial you did on youtube on black canvas, you did it in 2 parts, first part was clear on the top half followed by blue. Then you did some clouds, and mountains on the top half. If I remember correctly you highlighted the mountains in brown. I’ve searched your you tube channel and I’m either blind or I’m confusing you with someone else. Does this sound like a tutorial you may have posted? If it is, can you direct me to it please? Have Bob Ross Liquid Clear but I have begun using water mixable paints. Obviously, I cannot soap and water clean my brushes after they are contaminated with liquid clear oil. What do I use instead?

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Darla - I've used water mixable linseed oil in olace of liquid clear. Its quite a bit thinner so apply very sparingly and dab off any wet bits. Then you can use water mixables for everything including thinning down your paint for those fine branches and grasses. I'll be making a video all about this soon. Best wishes - Paul 😃😎

    You are really so helpful with these! I have a request for you to do the Island in the Wilderness Bob Ross classic but in gold. Those rare days where the sunset is a pure shade of golden yellow. I always felt that it's one of the hardest kinds of paintings to get right. Maybe because yellow paint is kind of the opposite of how yellow is created from the sun ie a Sum of Red and Green wavelengths.

    Do you do any surface preparation such as Gesso and/or primer? (Apart from Liqud White, which I DON'T enjoy using.) I don't like the way the liquid white dilutes the colours. I like to keep mine transparent and vivid, NOT diluted. I tend to use glazing techniques.

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      As I tend to use my own DIY paper canvases they always need a couple of coats of gesso to seal them up. Most canvases come pre-primed but thats no guarantee its been applied well. Unless it's a brand I know well I always apply a coat of gesso. I love both the Liquid White and clear depending on what I'm painting. But I say do what makes you happy. - Paul 😃😃

    • @PaulRansonArt
      @PaulRansonArt 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, mine had a little wrinkle when I apply the first coat of acrylic. I always use heavy-weight decorators ( as per the list of materials in the description ) lining paper which wrinkles far less. And I use a small roller to apply a nice coat of acrylic paint that's a reasonable quality. Some are more water than paint and this causes a few wrinkles. Lastly, I always tape my paper to an old canvas to keep it as flat as possible when drying. These steps usually keep my paper flat. The second coat of acrylic usually knocks out any other wrinkles. Hope this helps😃

    Hi Paul! I’m loving this lovely Bob Ross classic. He was very lucky to have lived in Alaska, and saw glaciers and gorgeous mountains. Your version is stunning. I especially like learning how the shadow line separates the peak from the white cloud background. I also am so glad you kept the whole mountain! Sometimes paintings change a bit and I feel that it can become even cooler than what I imagine it would be. I also need to remember to plan ahead- your big pine in the foreground had no trouble dropping in on top of the white area- gotta remember that one. I find the crunchy sound of tapping in pine trees very satisfying. I have been practicing on canvas paper some great landscapes. Thank you Paul, very much for your help in painting this! Have a wonderful week! 🖌️🎨🤩😊🤗

      Hi Stephanie - it's so true that the more you practice the easier it all appears to fall in place. I once watched a very skilled mechanic repair an engine. He used very little effort to open up the various bolts and nuts and in what felt like a few minutes he emerged with the offending component for replacement. I asked him how he knew where to look. He simply replied - it's the same bit that snaps on all of them! Practice and learning what goes where is always the key. Now today I'm in unchartered waters again - literally a painting I've never done before so let's see where I end up!

    I'm so sorry to bother, but want very much to paint with you again. Although your pallet is limited, my choices don't seem to include enough. I don't have Prussian blue, but do have your sky blue, lt gray blue, & untramarine. Also have Bob's and Winton's pthalo blues. As for yellows, I have your naple's, bright, and pale as well as cad yellow. From the reds, I have aliz. crim. and your primary magenta and your light red. For these above three colors that I'll need to paint with you, can you suggest any acceptable alternatives from what I have? Or do I need to go shopping? I thank you in advance, should you answer. You're my favorite!!

      Hi Sue - thank you for your lovely comments. I'm delighted to be your favourite 🥰As for colours - you already have a good selection but there are a couple I use that you will find useful. Van dyke Brown is a good base colour for tree trunks, rocks etc. I also suggest you get some black. There are a few like Ivory Black but I prefer Lamp Black which is a nice dense colour. Lastly you didn't mention if you have any Green so a nice Sap Green and some Yellow Ochre are good to get. Lasly Indian Yellow is a wonderful transparent colour I use a lot. I don't use magenta on screen but its one I like for my own paintings. With these colours you can make a Prussian Blue by mixing a little Black with Ultramarine Blue or Ph Blue. I hope this helps. Have fun and make your own paintings uniquely yours - Paul 😃😃😍😍

      @@PaulRansonArt I'm honored that you would reply! Thank you so much! I have the liquid white and liquid black I'll need for the beginner's Ocean Sunrise seascape above. You put together a pallet of just six colors and for all the tubes of oils I've bought, I don't have three of them. Is it possible that you might suggest a substitute from the ones I'd listed that I do have? I do have blacks, browns, greens.... I have some BR and some from his son's line as well as the Paul Ranson set that I trust is actually sanctioned by you. :-) Anyway, I have my canvas taped and ready to go, but need to know what to do in lieu of the three colors of your six-color pallet that I don't actually have. Which out of my list would your recommend that I use? And once again, I do thank you so much. You're the funniest, most cheerful and encouraging, as well as helpful instructor out there!!

      @@sueconte6790 OK so the three basic sky / sea colours I would choose are the cad yellow, alizarin crimson and for lavender mix some alizarin crimson with a small amount of phalos blue ( either brand ) Thats the three colours I used. You have liquid black and the white can be a small dab of titanium white - I find liquid white too runny for the nice sparkle on the sea. So your all set no need to buy anything. Now - this is a painting you can really experiment with. So maybe paint it several times and add a little magenta to one and change the yellow too. You'll be amazed at how many beautiful skies you can paint with just three basic colours - Have fun - Paul 😃😃

    This has always been one of my favorite paintings from Bob Ross. I was always too intimidated to try it. Thank you for sharing! This came out beautifully
