  • As a long-time user of Head and Shoulders I wanted to give their Royal Oils shampoo a try but as I reached for a bottle at my local grocery store I found myself asking this question: do I need my dandruff shampoo to acknowledge my blackness? Review aside, I'll be interested to see what you all have to say in the comments below! #semifreeformlocs #HeadandShoulders

I truly appreciate that you try stuff like this for a fair amount of time before reviewing it. Your opinions carry much more weight for stuff to me because of that. Dandruff isn't an issue for me but I always appreciate your videos and filmmaking so I'm enjoying it all the same. Thanks!

Natural hair is getting bigger in the black community and it's like everyone... I Mean everyone, wants to make money off of it... I dunno. That's my take on it. Yes it's an everybody issue lol 😂.. well... ☮️

Yup that’s because coconut like is a solid when not warmed up basically it solidifies in your hair and drys it up

I think they are trying to accomplish two things:
    1. Get a slice of the black hair care market, which is huge.
    2. Attract customers who probably wouldn't even consider using their namesake hair care line.
I don't know anyone who uses Head & Shoulders. Now black people will use products traditionally targeted to caucasians if it fits the bill, but those are usually targeting moisture. Like you said H & S is to combat dandruff and dry scalp. Now when I go to Target, I see a new collections targeted to black hair from mainstream brands like Pantene and Suave.

I never would have considered h&s for dandruff, but royal oils got me (bought for my daughter, haven't used it yet). Traditionally, I would have gotten sulfur 8 for dandruff.

While I appreciate companies trying to be more inclusive, I also can't help but feel some type of way by the shameless ways they try to market to our community.
    It's definitely a delicate balance.

4B/4C with seborrheic dermatitis and I totally fell for the marketing of this line. Although I knew good and well that coconut oil isn't the best product for my scalp, I tried it anyway. It helped the flaking and inflammation, but I definitely agree that my hair/scalp don't feel as clean after a wash. I may try the Deep Moisture line in the future, once I run through this giant bottle!

I have the same issue. I did fall for the royal oils cause of the coconut but I use almost all of the other head and shoulders shampoos and the 2n1s. I have lots so don't bother with their conditioners. I love them all, especially the ones for itchy scalp cause you can feel the peppermint.

Medicated shampoo is universal, and everyone can use it. This line is unnecessary. I don't need or want everything I buy to cater specifically to me. Just make a good product, and if I like it I'll buy it.

Living in the UK I have never heard of Royal Oils products, but I have been using Head and Shoulders shampoo for most of my adult life. It's the shampoo I tried first when I stops using the cosmetic ones and it's the best decision I made for my scalp. Sorry, those other black owned shampoos just don't work. 4.12.19

    No.
They’re acknowledging that they also want a piece of that natural hair product pie. For brands as old as HS, it either works for us or it doesn’t. It’s not like they’re doing serious reformulations for our hair type. They’re ever so slightly tweaking it and re-presenting in a natural hair-friendly format. That’s all.

Unfortunately, I am extremely sensitive to many natural products as well. Be blessed.

I think because they are traditionally a white hair company, black folk dont think HS, they think Sulphur 8. Beside me I think you are the only other black woman I heard say they use HS. When I tell my peers I use HS the are mega surprised. So yeah I think their marketing strategy was necessary to reach the AA demographic.

From what I’ve been told and seen the other shampoos specifically for dandruff control or sebhorric dermatitis is not about your blackness but your curl type … the other lines are EXTREMELY damaging to curly hair I’m talking about irreversible damage bc it intends to completely dry your hair out … so that’s why it’s important in my opinion I actually appreciate it
But I also get your apprehension
That being said in that same video they said coconut oil and avocado oil can exacerbate scalp conditions so when I saw avocado oil I was confused eh maybe I will just look for ingredients that were recommended and water down the deep moisture one and just go back over it with something else
I know my issues are due to hard water bc I never had these issues when I lived in NC

Imma be real this the only line I used one my hair and Its been really good. Haven’t seen a dandruff at all. And the shampoo is not drying and the conditioner is ok I still use my Vo5 and follow my regular routine. I never tried the deep moisture I might have to. But the royal oils did help especially since I have to stop use if I’ll on my scalp. I use the spray and scalp creme as well.

You are so funny and insightful. I have fine, Caucasian hair that’s damaged on the bottom. The coconut oil trend near my roots is a disaster for grease. I did like the royal oils mask, but I think what you are saying is curious, as I haven’t seen a major brand for a scalp issue target Asian hair or another ethnicity. Fun fact- when I look up head and shoulders reviews I find a ton by people in India. Which, to be humble a jut, they spend 2.99 usd on a bottle and their median household income for the year is 5,000 dollars usd. I would say go for the deep moisture too! I use that one in the summer when I shampoo more frequently and I like this menthol Mens one now, but that one is DRYING. Used tb of conditioner as a leave in:)

I'm not sure about the demographic thing; I know they did a cowash + if I didn't have sisterlocks now I'd be looking for moisturising shampoos with anti dandruff effects still! Lazy natural all the way lol, if I don't need an extra step I'm all for it.

Hey! Died laughing and agree with: " Do I need to black with dandruff issues?" 🤔😕Girl yes, i love H&S. You are the first loc'd person that I've heard use that shampoo besides myself. I was so worried about my scalp when I first loc'd my hair almost 3 years ago. I didn't think i could use H&S because the research i did spoke against creamy shampoos. But hey, i have no flakes and my hair is so shiny and black. The almond oil version for extra dry scalp is best for me.

Again no offense and I am sorry it did not work for you. I have also used Royal oils my self being asian with straight hair.

My hair type is bald. Is this good for me too? Lmao... I had bad dandruff when I was younger because I was using a crappy shampoo that would severely dry out my skin because I had oily skin and I guess that wasn't acceptable to my father. I've had chronic dandruff ever since. My dandruff only got better when I started using head n shoulders, but I think head n shoulders might have caused my early balding.... Well, just shampoo in general. Big brands didn't put oils in there recipe like some do now. I don't know. I just use Dove everything now.

You definitely need your blackness identified 100%. We are the original and first humans on earth and our hair need specific and special attention. Our hair is designed differently and needs different care like we use to do in Africa. So if head & shoulders is focusing on us just take it as a compliment and leave race out of it. For years I use to wash my hair and dry my scalp out because I didn't understand our hair and scalp is designed differently and we need are own specific products.

Please read my comment, for your best interest! Head and Shoulders is the worst product you can ever use in your hair! The pH balance is horrible and gets worse when using this product. A normal and healthy pH balance is between 4.5-5 range. Head and Shoulders has a range of 6.5-8.6 pH! With an experiment I completed head and shoulders removed a stain in a white shirt that the leading brand of stain remover couldn’t remove, let that sink in ladies
