i don’t think he meant anything by saying “real job,” it’s no secret chess doesn’t make much. I make more than most grandmasters that’s not bragging that’s just being real. If you’re not top 20 in chess it’s hard to pay the bills.

Hopefully the increase in popularity in the States will bring in more private funding, and hopefully that will grow the game more. If someone can make the rapid matches more TV friendly, that could potentially bring in a ton of corporate sponsors.

@@munchkinmatt1670 Yep, the Problem is the the FIDE is a problem. It's a relic of the old soviet times. They wanted to send the women to Saudi A. and have them dress accordingly. They were unable to retain Hou Yifan, the forced Ding Liren to play in the middle of a pandemic that was destroying his country and he went down just to keep the championship fully European and we have the ridicule that the world championship was, with a game level that will be painful to international masters. They are pretty traditional. The fact that they invited Nakamura could be a sing of the things to come, but I will not be holding my breath 😂

I defeated Hikaru Nakamura in a small local tournament at an American Legion Post in 1994 when he was 7 years old in the Bronx NY. He blundered his queen. He tearfully stood and shook my hand. His step father Sunil Weeramantry hugged him. At the time I thought cute kid. Who could have guessed he'd end up where he is today? I hear he has a near photographic memory. I wonder if he remembers that game. Somehow I think he does. I've written to him but he's never answered.
