What made Reading Rainbow so great is that LeVar Burton knew how to talk to kids in a way they could understand without talking down to them. Nobody else could have gotten me so interested in reading.
First we have to get adults from my generation who grew up with it to stop giving their kids computers, TVs and cell phones instead of books.. and actually spending time with them.
+SilvaDreams No offense but youre making millennials out to be worse than they actually are, i get what you mean, kids these days need to connect to their roots and have good morals instilled in them, but the internet is so powerful and innovative in millions of ways and yet you choose to see the cup as half empty. Sorry, I'm just tired of seeing these comments from adults that romanticize the past :/
Jordan Tai Sorry but I grew up with the internet and I know how useful it can be, I had internet access long before most house holds did. It doesn't change the fact that parents don't supervise their kids at all and are so afraid to punish them, tell them no, or take away their things for fear of it being called abusive.
I love Reading Rainbow so much. I am 21 now, and in college, but I will never forget how my 2nd grade teacher let us watch this show everyday at snack time. My family couldn't afford the higher channels in cable so PBS Kids was the only kid's channel I had. Reading Rainbow was such a huge part of my childhood - and now I'm an English major! Thanks Levar! :)
+Bruce Wayne They couldn't afford cable because they were sacrificing it all during my childhood so that they could save up to send me to college. It wasn't a lot of money, but I've made up the difference myself with scholarships I've worked my ass off to get. Now my parents don't have to pay a dime, so I'm GLAD I didn't have cable. But I guess Bruce Wayne wouldn't have to worry about things like that - after all, you've got your Batman credit card - never leave the cave without it...
I remember the children's library had a section filled with books that were featured on Reading Rainbow. They had little rainbow stickers on the spine of the book. I read as many as possible. It was glorious. This show definitely fueled my love for reading, and inspired my imagination. Wonderful show.
im so grateful to have had these types of shows growing up...reading rainbow, mr. rogers. sesame street etc....they all had one thing in common that i think is most important in developing childrens minds...creative imagination....the ability to create and make is useful in any area of life...i owe all of my intelligence to that principle...
As somebody who grew up watching Reading Rainbow, this almost made me cry. Mr. Burton should be damn proud of the way he helped spark the imaginations of a generation of kids.
"you can be the expert by picking up a book, it's up to you to bring it to life." If more people realized this and took initiative I wonder how great the world could be. All the PBS remixes are so good. Make it so.
I remember watching Reading Rainbow in my classes when i was in elementary school, and being excited to watch this at home after school. This brings back so many memories, I wish they would bring this back; I would watch it every week
I'm 18 and I'm so thankful for the many PBS shows that shaped me to be a better person and educated me so much- time flyer be in graduated high school off to college😩
I was born in '98 and live in germany, so I didn't grew up with this, but damn I wish I had, this is an awesome remix of a awesome Show, now excuse me, I got a lot of reading to do!
Levar Burton is, not only a highly intellectual individual, but also an individual who uses his entertainment career to educate children. I truly believe that anyone who does anything for the benefit of children has a special seat reserved for them in Heaven. People like Mr. Burton should be recognized for their contributions.
LeVar is great, I grew up watching PBS, mr Rodgers, bob ross, etc , PBS has had programs that have educated many children for many years as I hope they will continue to do in the future
I totally credit this show with giving me a love for reading that goes on to this day. Listening to this remix, just took my right back to my childhood.
Old as in 40s 50s maybe, but not old as in 80s-90s. The late 80s through the 90s to even the early 2000s were amazing for learning. PBS, TLC, history channel etc. Zabomafoo (SP), In between the lions, reading rainbow, sesame street etc were all very educational. Now it's about reality TV and shows for the simple minded (show attention spans) that plague these channels now.
Tink Reading Rainbow was my childhood but I also learned to read at 3 since my mom would always read to me before I went to sleep. Those were the days.
Ah...back when commenting was a little bit more polite, and there were only 12 year old cancer kids, but now..... they've grown up, and is spreading their dumbness everywhere.
I. Love. Maps! I can relate. When I was a kid I would dig through my mums World Atlas. Living in Australia it blew me away that people could live in snow or on god-damn mountains and rivers.
+Thunderhooves What like inside the tree Golden Oaks Library style or in the treetops? In the atlas there was a picture of a car driving through a massive tree, like someone carved a tunnel into it.
winter in northern Minnesota can be very brutal. the coldest temp I ever encountered was -70 with a 50 mph wind. you can't even be outside for 10 minutes without something bad happening like frostbite or hypothermia
Rman The Ass Eater you are not alone bud, beside my dad, grandpa and a few uncles and cousins, LeVar Burton, Sir Patrick Stewart, Christopher Reeve, George Lucas, Robin Williams, Steven Spielberg, Bob Ross, and John Williams were an inspiration when I was a wee lad.
"Automatic dog-walking machine", "a machine to clean up my room." I'm an adult, but I want both of these. You kids are geniuses; let me know when they're ready. :-)
Gawd, I loved that show. I wish my son could still see this. We read to him all the time but I want him to have the same love and appreciation that I had for reading. Reading Rainbow and Book-It were a huge part of that growing love and they just don't exist anymore. :(
Reading Rainbow was one of the shows that taught me English and about all the cool books when I first came to the United States! I Still love it today! Great Video, so many happy memories! thank you for sharing this with us! :) Much Love.
Today's #tbt is Reading Rainbow with LeVar Burton! Reminisce over that butterfly in the sky with our remix by *****: th-cam.com/video/-FD1K8OvVCs/w-d-xo.html
It's when I watch this video, I remember that things like the HTC Vive or Hololens exist. Kids now live in a world where they could "actually BE" on the moon. Or have big balloons or spaceships in their rooms. I honestly think VR is right up there with the internet, television, radio, and books. What an amzing time to be alive.
I remember when in class they had us write why we loved books. This is what I wrote " books let me go on adventure I'd never be able to do" Even to this day if I can't sleep I'll make a story in my head, or read a book. I have always been a head in all my reading classes. I still find my self humming reading rain bow and its a wonderful day in this naberhood (still can't spell)
How simple a concept, but how excellently brought to life, without any condescension. Just the quiet wonders of books, and how they infuse the mind with great things. I dig all these remixes.
People like LeVar Burton and Mister Rogers have given so much to my childhood. I wish we had more childrens educators on television like them these days
This has to be the best program ever aired on PBS. When I was a child, this was an inspiration to me; reading about different cultures, societies, ages, and even fiction was mesmerizing. Not only did I escape the doldrums of ordinary life, I felt like I was a pioneer, and adventurer, in a brand new world each time I turned the page. Reading Rainbow is what drove me to be the person I am, and am ever thankful for Levar Burton and this show. I wish kids today had this.
I actually never heard of RR up until a couple of years ago because as a kid I didn't watch much tv other than cartoons because I kept watching my favorite movies over and over again, which is a shame because I loved to read at that age but when I went Junior High I stopped reading for fun for over a decade, I think if I watched RR things would've been different.
I always wanted to be on this show for the end part where the kids do the book reviews. I wish I would've told my parents or teachers to look into it for me, at the time. Has anyone watching this video actually been on the show?
Reading Rainbow was my childhood friend I learned from Mr.LeVar Burton.i appreciated all the stories and how expressive Mr.LeVar Burton was.i said to my mom i want a library card momma.Ma took me to get my library card.Thank you Mr.LeVar Burton and Reading Rainbow.
I thank God for people like: LeVar Burton & Fred Rogers. These two men have been teachers and mentors to me from afar. I agree with you.
I always Loved reading!☺
Yeah, I attribute him to a big part of why I love to read today
+Phil H Yes! Thank you. I think I told my Mom once I wished LeVar was my uncle, lol. Loved this man as a kid.
Phil H reading rainbow was my favorite back in the day :)
the new generation needs shows like this now
I JUST said this to my husband.
First we have to get adults from my generation who grew up with it to stop giving their kids computers, TVs and cell phones instead of books.. and actually spending time with them.

I think you mean "The next Generation." I'll see myself out
I love Reading Rainbow so much. I am 21 now, and in college, but I will never forget how my 2nd grade teacher let us watch this show everyday at snack time. +MaiCohWolf Sounds like my childhood Im also 21 with the same situation
Im 21 too!😁 Childhood was great when I watched these.
+MaiCohWolf your family couln't afford cable, but could afford to send you to college?
+Bruce Wayne mine couldn't either, I've funded my own college.

Joshua Scott We truly grew up during the golden era of telvision
i agree; well said
Think about reading,
You are looking at markings on thin slices of a tree and basically hallucinating while you stare at these markings lol
Wtf dis nigga lives outside the box.
lol
Holy shit...
+Josh Wiley It's pretty freakin awesome when you think about it...
I have the sudden urge to read a book
Charles Dyer. Or a map lol. Thought i was the only one. its crazy, everything is digital now eh?
guardians of ga'hoole is a great book
Puppy Lightning Knight I loved that series when I read it back in middle school.
One of my all time favourites, Ready Player One. A book that just spoke to me, I never felt so invested in a book before.
Charles Dyer Same n I don’t read
"...this is a book. Big or little, it doesn't matter. It's what's inside that counts."
So true dat. :P
:)
"all these books started out as an idea, and look where then ended up!" This why I love writing.
We seriously need children's programs like this.
Levar is such a great person. Makes me want to read.
& I remember Scholastic Books coming to my school for kids. That was an amazing experience. Does anyone else remember it?
yes I do! I had a wonderful teacher who bought books for me and friends that we would choose. Shout out to Mr. Pete in the Bronx.
As somebody who grew up watching Reading Rainbow, this almost made me cry. Mr. Burton should be damn proud of the way he helped spark the imaginations of a generation of kids.
Thank you for this that s why Im righting my first children book for my kids thank you so much to you PBS and sesame Street
Every video from this guy is my favorite video.

Bring this show back!
I... LOVE... MAPS.
+CallMeBronco ALL KIND OF MAPS
CallMeBronco. Thought he said Naps for a sec, and i almost fell over laughing..
EACH ONE TELLS ME SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT THE WORLD
😂😂😂
I hate how this has another meaning these days :/
I felt like a nerd when he was walking on the bridge of the Enterprise. I was thinking to myself "YES!" lol
Did you see it when it first came on? Both shows were so huge.
@@StreetHierarchy As a 90s kid, I was there for both and I love both. I'm a big-time reader and I'll always love TNG.
Hey, PBS.. You're doing everything right. As a child that grew up learning from you, I feel like I can say that!
"There are stories everywhere you look, if you look in the right way" this statement is both incredible and true.
Definitely appreciated Reading Rainbow when I was young, just a wonderful program for kids.
man.....this brings back great memories...this and reading between the lions are responsible for my love of reading today
I miss this show and this man he made me live reading books
I remember watching Reading Rainbow in my classes when i was in elementary school, and being excited to watch this at home after school. This brings back so many memories, I wish they would bring this back; I would watch it every week
I'm 18 and I'm so thankful for the many PBS shows that shaped me to be a better person and educated me so much- time flyer be in graduated high school off to college😩

Sarmin Bratwurst is awesome
You can still watch the old episodes. They hold up very well! One of my favorites was from the early 1980s and is about dinosaurs. :) dai.ly/x6dmq11
reading rainbow was still out. i was born in 1997 and watched this show on TV as a kid it went until the mid 2000’s
Thank you Levar Burton and PBS for reading to us motivating us to learn how to read and use our imagination 👏😁
Levar Burton is, not only a highly intellectual individual, but also an individual who uses his entertainment career to educate children. I truly believe that anyone who does anything for the benefit of children has a special seat reserved for them in Heaven. People like Mr. Burton should be recognized for their contributions.
I miss watching all the reading rainbows in elementary school :)
LeVar is great, I grew up watching PBS, mr Rodgers, bob ross, etc , PBS has had programs that have educated many children for many years as I hope they will continue to do in the future

@Eudaemon Spirit As well as acquitted.
I'm still watching these remixes since 2012. And have since bought the MP3s. lol
Thank you for helping television grow, and education through entertainment. I loved these shows as a kid.
When I was little watching this show, I eventually started reading because of his words. From then on, I loved to read, even now ^-^
Every day in second grade, if we finished our work early, our teacher would turn on Reading Rainbow. :)
I used to watch Reading Rainbow when I was younger.
Halfway through my own novel now, thanks LeVar!
This reminds me of my wifes late dad.. Almost started crying. Guy was huge into reading and so is she and our kids...i play mass effect thats my books
I totally credit this show with giving me a love for reading that goes on to this day. Listening to this remix, just took my right back to my childhood.
This show got me into reading, and I couldn't be happier for it.
The school bribing us with free pizza helped too.
Alright, time to find a a book on the shelf and start reading it.
Ah back when TV taught lesson and promoted good values.
Indeed
Very late and insignificant reply.

I always liked this show. Encouraging literacy and creativity is always a wonderful thing.
Levar Burton, Mr. Rogers, Steve Irwin, Bob Ross: The four horsemen of making the world better.
Why is this so inspiring?
I. Love. Maps!
I can relate. When I was a kid I would dig through my mums World Atlas. Living in Australia it blew me away that people could live in snow or on god-damn mountains and rivers.
Or massive redwoods, like where I am, in California
+Thunderhooves What like inside the tree Golden Oaks Library style or in the treetops? In the atlas there was a picture of a car driving through a massive tree, like someone carved a tunnel into it.
LockeRobster Yeah, I've done that. It truly does humble you.

winter in northern Minnesota can be very brutal. the coldest temp I ever encountered was -70 with a 50 mph wind. you can't even be outside for 10 minutes without something bad happening like frostbite or hypothermia
If you enjoyed this Reading Rainbow mix, there are some other PBS Digital Studios mixes you might enjoy...but you don't have to take my word for it.
Yeah.. These PBS remix videos are completely awesome. I love all of them..
So much nostalgia...
Books are just the best things ever. They can take you out of the crappy normal world for a bit and it's just yes so much yes
Let me just say that Levar Burton was the most inspirational man of my childhood
After reading your comment then your name .... best laugh of the day..thanks
"Automatic dog-walking machine", "a machine to clean up my room." I'm an adult, but I want both of these. You kids are geniuses; let me know when they're ready. :-)
Also, it's very important that the room-cleaning machine works in the kitchen. ;-)
Well we're getting there. We've got roombas and treadmills with screens.
Seeing the old TV being wheeled in to class to watch Reading Rainbow...those were some good times.
Any of you visiting this, Levar has a podcast where he picks a short story and reads through it. Highly recommend
Gawd, I loved that show. I wish my son could still see this. We read to him all the time but I want him to have the same love and appreciation that I had for reading. Reading Rainbow and Book-It were a huge part of that growing love and they just don't exist anymore. :(
Lone Wulf it's on Netflix!
N Frank No way! Seriously?! That'd be awesome! Thanks! I'll go look as soon as I get home!
Anytime!
When I was a kid, I was amazed that LaVar was on Reading Rainbow and Star Trek.
Omg the begining of the original theme took me back :'D its sad to see what kids are watching now
This was seriously one of my favorite shows as a kid. Thank you so much for this remix.
So many good memories. This show taught me many good lessons.

I'm still watching these remix videos since 2012. Love them!! They don't make great educational shows like this much anymore.
PBS was all I watched as a child, Reading Rainbow was always a favorite!
His remixes/tributes are amazing!
This is exactly what needed
I remember when in class they had us write why we loved books.
This is what I wrote
" books let me go on adventure I'd never be able to do"
Even to this day if I can't sleep I'll make a story in my head, or read a book. I have always been a head in all my reading classes. I still find my self humming reading rain bow and its a wonderful day in this naberhood (still can't spell)
Its the ones making stories that see further than what depresses people.
I remember when I was in kindergarten and they used to play this this was my show.
"You can be the expert in your imagination." Great one liner!
Do a double take on that line:
"You can be the expert.... in your imagination."
I love how PBS got to use the Enterprise's bridge.
How simple a concept, but how excellently brought to life, without any condescension. Just the quiet wonders of books, and how they infuse the mind with great things. I dig all these remixes.

Books and a tardis are more similar than I thought
Is that leVar burton from Star Trek the next generation
Bazinga Jaffa Yes
The one and only.
The funny thing is that when TNG came out everyone was saying "Is that LeVar from Reading Rainbow?"
Also Kunta Kinte
Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge
Nice little plug there, with the TNG set on reading rainbow....
I loved this show growing up and I loved to escape into books (still do!). My children also have a love of books, partly because of this show!
I grew up on Reading Rainbow; I'm 25 years old, but I'm totally stoked to see it make a triumphant return to the airwaves! :D
Extreme nostalgic moment. .
I always wanted to be on this show for the end part where the kids do the book reviews. I wish I would've told my parents or teachers to look into it for me, at the time. Has anyone watching this video actually been on the show?
I don't know why I cried while watching this. Brings back so many memories...
I’m 37 and Lavar brought such a wonderful world of imagination through Reading Rainbow and Star Trek.
