Luke is just classic "I realized her value now she's not there". You can not take you relationship for granted, you can't put pause to a situation in motion cause something else hit you, if you do the earlier thing automatically becomes of lesser important. And Lorelai didn't want to be his second priority when she's trying to make him her first. This was so frustrating to watch.
I realize that Lorelai sleeps with Christopher, and then tells Luke about it, because she "needs it to be over" and she knows this will really put the nail in the coffin of the relationship. Personally, though, I would have still turned Luke down in "The Long Morrow" and NOT told him about Christopher. I would have given him another, and equally true, reason why: I'd have said, "Luke, I needed you to be there for me two nights ago. No excuses, no hesitation, in my hour of pain and distress, I needed you to step up and be a man for me. And you didn't. "All this talk about 'let's get married now,' the camping equipment in your truck, etc., etc., it's all very sweet. But it's too late. You had your chance, and you blew it. My love for you has been dying ever since I found out you lied to me about April, and two nights ago was the final blow. You killed it stone dead." And to clarify, I wouldn't have had Lorelai keep quiet about sleeping with Christopher because she did anything wrong. They were broken up at that point, and even if they hadn't been broken up, Luke reaped what he sowed. No, I would have advised her not to say anything because it gives Luke a reason to ignore his selfish, unloving behavior and stomp off in a righteous huff. And that's exactly what he proceeds to do, drive off thinking to himself, "Well, obviously I'm not the bad guy here. Sure, I ignored my fiance, hurt her, used her and betrayed her for months (treating Lorelai like a second-class citizen when it came to his daughter was betraying her), but hey, at least I didn't sleep with anybody else! I've been a callous, selfish jerk but I'm off the hook now!"
*SPOILERS, IF ANYONE CARES LOL* Luke was hesitant, a little distant, and very distracted. He hid April and that was wrong. However, he absolutley did not deserve the crushing blow that Lorelai dealt him. Running off and sleeping with the the exact guy that he was worried about ( and he was only worried about him cuz SHE made it suspicious in the first place).. Luke wasn't pushing Lorelai away on purpose. He wasn't trying to hurt her. He simlpy wanted to form a solid relationship with April BEFORE involving Lorelai and, while he shouldn't have hid it at first, I do think he had every right to keep them seperate for while. April was HIS kid and he had every right to try and build a good foundation for that relationship before letting Lorelai into the mix. He wasn't gonna keep them seperate forever. Lorelai actually downplayed how much she wanted to be involved in April's life and how much it meant to her to get married. She tried to make it seem like these things weren't getting to her. If she had told Luke what she ended up telling Sookie (the analogy, with the car and her hanging onto the bumper and getting hurt) I really believe Luke would have done everything in his power to reassure her that he loved her, wanted to marrry her and did in fact want her to be a part of April's life when the time was right. Cuz, when has he ever not tried his best to make Lorelai happy? As soon as she ever needs anything or wants anything or tells him that she's hurt, he tries to give her whatever it is that she needs~ Or even little things he does, like the tv he bought for his apartment just for her. She didn't say she wanted it or needed it, but he knew it would make her happy to have it, so he got it. And this pattern Luke of just trying to make Lorelai happy, makes the whole thing with the fight even more sad. This ultimatum finally let him know just how anxious and hurt and scared she was about everything. Now he knew. So how could she NOT KNOW that he'd come to her with his truck all packed and ready to go and marry and give her everything she said she needed? That is CLASSIC LUKE. How did she not see that coming? He would never just leave her hurting like that. I know that she wasn't trying hurt Luke either, by sleeping with Christopher. She was just using him as a band-aid cuz she was hurt and she was convinced that Luke didn't love her anymore. I just thought it was ridiculous that she went to his diner, threw that fit (while his business was open and full of people and he was in the middle of working), gave him all of 3 SECONDS to figure what the heck was going on, and then went right to Chris. Litally, Diner > Car > Chris's bed. After everything Luke did for her throughout their friendship/relationship too, it 's sad that this awkward patch that they were going through (CUZ HE JUST FOUND OUT HE HAD A WHOLE HECKING 12 YEAR OLD KID) was enough to make her, not only doubt that he loved her, but to do something that, IF SHE WERE WRONG ABOUT ALL THIS (which she obviously was), would hurt him so so badly. And STILL after that, this poor guy STILL just wants to make her happy and see her pretty smile~ Him putting together that party for Rory and making sure that it happened, even when it looked like they wouldn't be abe to pull it off, was such profoundly grand gesture of his love for Lorelai. And he didn't even want the credit for that! She only found out it was all Luke's doing cuz of Sookie. All Luke ever wanted was to see Lorelai happy and, to me, it seemed like he usually did everything he could to make it happen. I have no idea why some people think he doesn't deserve her. Seems like he'd do anything for her. ~Sorry for the essay lol Been thinking a lot about this show lately. Is it healthy? No, probably not. ✌
@@wafflesocks5260 No apologies necessary! It's great when there are shows that inspire us to think deeply about them -- those are the best shows. I see what you're saying, but Lorelai did reveal her fears/sadness to Luke at Martha's Vineyard. He reassured her that all would be well, he did love her, etc., etc., and then after they returned to Star's Hollow, he jumped right back into "Okay, you make sure to stay away from my daughter, but oh, thanks for letting me use your garage as convenient storage for my daughter's bike" mode. He didn't change his behavior in any regard, despite knowing how she felt. Lorelai was also probably worried after that meeting with Anna, who gives her that ridiculous "engaged isn't married" excuse for staying away from April. Luke at that point was bowing and scraping to Anna's every whim (I loved the scene where he finally stood up to her in Season 7). Understandable since he was afraid of losing access to his kid, but pretty callous to Lorelai. He also casually took that new suitcase from Anna, a pretty crappy thing to do when your fiance has offered to get you one and you turned her down. More than anything else, however, I think it was Luke's lie that caused all the problems. To keep a secret like that from your fiance and for two months (!) is going to deal a massive blow to the trust between you. Especially when Luke screamed at Lorelai and lectured her just one episode before about "How dare you keep secrets from me! We must never have any secrets!" I can't blame Lorelai for doubting Luke's fundamental commitment. And sometimes it's not enough to show up the next day, or the day after. Some moments, once lost, are lost forever. Luke seems like a "great friend, lousy boyfriend" kind of guy. He manages some big gestures when he's not involved with someone, but then when they *are* involved, all his worst traits get dialed up to 11.
@@heatherhoward8064 **SPOILERS ** Haha thanks! Sometimes I feel weird about having so much to say 😶 I remember the Martha's Vineyard scene, but the only thing that they discuss there is the postponement of their engagement. April doesn't come up at all. At this point Luke still thinks that Lorelai is fine with the April situation. There's even one point in another episode where Luke says something like "I appreciate you giving me the time and space to work out this stuff with April" or something like that and Lorelai is like "sure, no problem." I will agree with you that hiding April for 2 months was the worst thing that Luke did. ESPECIALLY after the episode with all the "no secrets" stuff lol. The whole time that he kept April from her, I was just watching in disbelief. Like.. SIR the no secrets thing JUST HAPPENED. Why are you over here keeping the biggest secret ever? HMM??! lol I don't really blame her for having doubts after this either but having doubts doesn't mean you just like.. totally losing faith in the relationship. He knew he screwed up, he said he was sorry. He was totally freaked out and didn't want to mess up either of these two HUGE things that were happening in his life and he just could not imagine merging them. He thought it would be a disaster. Not saying that Luke is Mr. Perfect, but he was dealing with something big and he fumbled cuz he was freaked out. Although, I personally find it somewhat excusable, I can undertand why she would struggle to trust him after this. However, I really don't think you're giving him enough credit when you say he was a "lousy boyfriend." He was there whenever she needed him and he was always happy to just do stuff with her (shopping, town meetings, dinner with sookie, jackson and their annoying kids). He just liked doing anything with her cuz he just likes to see her happy. He's not lousy. He gave up the house he'd always wanted to have for a family, because he realized Lorelai loved her own home so much. He just gave it up with no fuss or anything. No convincing her how great the new house could be. Nothing like that~ cuz if Lorelai wouldn't be happy there, the house meant nothing to him. And she didn't even have to say that she didn't want to live there. He just saw how anxious she seemed to be about getting rid of her home and realized that she had too much love for house to leave it. The thing about this, is that it happened BEFORE April came into the picture. When April happened, he became preoccupied and apparently his ability to read Lorelai just kinda flew out the window. Pre-April Luke would have known right away that he should have sent the luggage right back to Anna, as soon as he had that convo with Lorelai lol. He also would have known that Lorelai was NOT fine about the wedding being postponed or the April situation. But that is because Lorelai was the CENTER of Pre-April Luke's world. Now that April is in the picture he's mostly focused her, and honestly I kind of think he should be. I personally think it was kind of weird of Lorelai to want to be involved with April right away, especially if Luke wanted to wait. He had every right to set that boundary. Luke was insecure about involving Lorelai because he genuinely thought that April wouldn't want anything to do with him after meeting her, and he told her that. But that insecurity actually did seem to melt away after Lorelai ended up helping him throw that party for the girls. At that point it was Anna, not Luke, that was standing in the way of Lorelai being in April's life. I don't think Luke would have kept them seperate anymore after such a success, if Anna hadn't insisted. Luke shouldn't be blamed for Anna's stupid rule. The problem here is that the wedding date has already been postponed. So now is the time when Lorelai should have went to Luke and said "Hey, I really wanna be married soon, so that Anna is ok with me being in April's life, because it hurts me that I'm not allowed to see her." But this conversation never happened (at least not to my knowledge). After talking with Anna, Lorelai never again mentions to Luke how much she wants to be in April's life and how the marraige is needed for that to happen (again, not to my knowledge). And since she and Luke already talked about her concerns with the postponement, at Martha's Vineyard, he probably thinks that she is fine with the postponement still. So as far as Luke is concerned, she is alright with both of these issues, while it could not be farther from the truth. She has totally stopped communicating at this point and she stews in all these feelings she's having until she finally blows up at him that night at diner, where she gives him the ultimatum. Also I would say that just appeasing someone when they're giving you an ultimatum is a terrible idea. If you just give them what they want, they might subconciously continue to manipulate you like that in the future. "The moment" as you put it was a bad moment. It was wrong of her to do that. If my guy was asking me to run away and marry him like that, no matter how much I loved him, I don't think I'd let him treat me like that (especially not in the middle of the business I owned, while it was open and full of ppl). I'm with Luke here. Even if you love them, the logical thing to do in that situation is let the person who gave the ultimatum go cool off, maybe give them a good hug if you think it will help them calm down, not give them an answer~ cuz they're clearly not in their right mind. But Lorelai didn't just go cool off, she went and immediately slept with Christopher, like a crazy person.
@@wafflesocks5260 I have to admit, I don't think Luke setting that boundary makes sense. Lorelai is his fiance at that point, not just his girlfriend. Finding out whether she's compatible with his daughter ASAP seems pretty important; what if they get married, Lorelai finally gets to interact with her and they can't get along at all (that might have been a more interesting plot twist than making April yet another precocious genius-y kid like Rory)? And the "she'll like you more" reason was profoundly shocking to me. The look on Lorelai's face when he says that to her -- she looks like she just got slapped, which metaphorically she did. That's likely why she stopped saying anything about wanting to be in April's life; what was the point? I understand that Luke was confused and trying to find his way, but that reason struck me as immature and cruel. And Luke's *still* doing that in the revival. Luke, Lorelai, April and Rory have dinner together, but then when Lorelai suggests helping out with April's travel expenses, he slaps her down with "April's MINE; I got it." Translation: She's *NOT* yours, so back off. Season 6 certainly is a testament to the importance of communication in a relationship! Lorelai is way too hesitant to confront Luke about how he's acting (is she afraid of him breaking up with her again, like he did after that earlier fracas with her mother?) and so it all builds and builds and builds until she explodes. The shrink gave her excellent advice in their "car session," but probably would have advised her to plan out what she wanted to say and then sit down with Luke for a calm discussion. Though causing a fracas in his place of business doesn't seem like a problem to me -- not when Luke himself screams at customers and sometimes physically throws them out the door :D And Luke didn't give Lorelai a hug, or any kind of reassurance (other than the same empty promises he'd been mouthing for months). He should have said, "Hey Ceasar, take over, I'll be back later," and taken Lorelai back to her house or his for a talk. Maybe said to her, "Okay, I can't get married right this minute, but let's set a firm date." Lorelai selflessly supported him, backed him for months (no manipulation at all -- and Lorelai would not have tried to manipulate him in the future, she's not that kind of person) and all it got her was stomped on and ignored. I guess I'm just not that impressed by a guy who sees his fiance standing in front of him, clearly at her wits' end, hurt, frightened, desperate for some real show of commitment, and he wusses out like that. It doesn't surprise me that she turned to someone she knew would show her open, unembarrassed affection.
I don't think he thought they were actually broken up. The way she came at him so suddenly, I think he thought it was a fight that they would have to deal with and not an actual break up. Her behavior really was non-sensical and erratic, which is not out of character for her. They had fights before. It's understandable he didn't think they were actually broken up. That he thought he might have a minute to think. Now two days is a long time to just not talk at all, but Lorelai slept with Christopher the moment after her outburst. There was no way for Luke to win this one. Lorelai set up the confrontation so that it would end badly. She expected Luke not to give her the right answer. Poor flawed Lorelai. Poor slow Luke.
@@bettersecret1499 Lol, no, I mean I guess I get where you’re coming from but he sure as hell didn’t hurt her “on purpose”. At most he knew she wasn’t all too happy with the way things were but it’s not as if he was like “yeah lemme just hurt the loml on purpose bc why not 😍😍?”
people say its just luke but its really not. i get lorelai was upset and she had a right to be because luke hurt her, but just because she was upset it doesn't mean she can just sleep with christopher
This scene literally hits the HEART!!! So so sad. The one dude Luke couldn't stand he had to find out lor slept with him because Luke didn't answer when she wanted him to. That was a smack in the face and gut. Poor Luke. Lot was disgustingly wrong..
So the supposed 'love of your life' asked you to marry her now or never then she broke up with you and you wait TWO days to talk to her.. SURE. They are both stupid
Well, technically he came to talk to her the morning after the ultimatum and she told him it was over. He comes back again the following morning with the car packed, ready to elope. But agreed, they were both stupid and responsible for the breakup.
I’m with Lorelai. I mean come on he waited too long. He should have run after her the night she came to him with ultimatum. I mean anyone could see he was hurting her with keeping April separate and all she wanted as a partner and fiancé is to be next to him while he was figuring things out with his daughter. Like Jezus Christ....she wasn’t going to hurt his daughter in any way and Luke was acting like she a was the enemy. Luke made me sooo angry during this period. He ruined the wedding I pictured for Lorelai with everything she went through she should have had her dream wedding at the very least and Luke ruined that for us. I would never forgive him for that.
Luke did try to bring Lorelai into the situation with April with her birthday party. Then he gets attacked and threatened by Anna. After missing the first 12 years of your kids life being threatened with never seeing her again would be really scary. He asks Lorelai to give him time. He told her that was what he needed and then she decides all of the sudden that that won't work and he's just supposed to cave to whatever she wants in the space of 2 minutes? I mean is this how she would react every time they get into a fight while married? Go sleep with Christopher? That's not the proper way to handle a situation. Lorelai deserving a picture perfect wedding is just nonsense. She is notorious for ruining her own happiness over and over.
@@lauriecarson6483 Yes. He was freaking out and compartmentalizing because he didn't want it to mess up his relationship with Lorelai. They talked about it and it was getting better. Lorelai was getting along great with April, until Anna freaked out.
@@lauriecarson6483 They both wrong Lorelai knows Luke doesn't respond well under presure, she goes from luke is the love of my life to sleeping with Chris in 2 seconds, Also so Luke was to wait when Lorelai and Rory are having problems but when Luke ask for time to deal with his child she can't wait and has to deal in ultimatums, and yes Luke wasn't fair to Lorelai with the hole April thing
Yeah, some people can't get over the fact that it wasn't by ASP but the writers did a heroic job of picking up all the broken pieces from the season 6 finale and somehow tied everything up in a bow. Which ASP promptly erased with her revival.
I know lore can be annoying sometimes but with this I'm with her .. Luke was so indecisive, he never considered Lore's feelings. He somehow deserved it.
No, the moment when your spineless fiancé tried to cram months of atonement into one truck and a five-minute speech, not realizing that he blew it when he couldn’t be a man when it counted. When his love came to him and said, “I need you to put me first for once,” and he hemmed and hawed and hedged like a wimp. Luke brought this whole thing on himself.
@@cathmunk Nearly every single person on this show was terrible at communication when it really counted. And Lorelai wouldn’t have been in this position if her fiancé hadn’t lied to her, neglected her and used her for months. Maybe she didn’t communicate her feelings well, but Luke created the fundamental problem.
@@heatherhoward8064 be a man when he counted? Part of being a man is not letting emotions (not even love) cloud your principles. Luke put April first like any mature man would do if they were a father (you know who also constantly puts her daughter first? Lorelai, oh but when Luke does it it's the bad guy, right?). Marriage is a silly social construct (that's why I have no respect for the institution of marriage whatsoever, nor any respect for those who whine like Lorelai for not being married). You don't need it to have a fulfilling loving lasting relationship. So if a woman threatens me to dump me unless I marry her I will dump her instead.
Luke is too late. He and Lorelai could have eloped last night when she suggested it, but now he missed his chance. He clearly didn't get the breakup message from her leaving after he rejected her ultimatum last night

They both are really the same. Only not at the same time. When you have a deep relationship, the time you have while you are in it can just be a moment or It could last a very long time. The thing you have to ask is : IS THIS SOMETHING I TRULY WANT? Or can you just toss it aside easily and say WE'RE DONE. Nothing is that easy. Loralie, like most women want their man to fight for them. So they aren't DONE.
I really don’t understand how this hurts that bad … but this scene was the most heartbreaking one…. 💔🥺 Lorelai really missed every out by sleeping with Christopher… the only good thing from that is at the end of the season when you see how she realizes it has always been Luke no matter how hard she tried for Christopher she was in love with Luke and could not do anything against that but it really hurts that we’ve never been able to see them to get marry, have kids… everything both of them really wanted together 🥺💔
It was boiling hot water on the face.. I know Luke has done Lor wrong since April came along, but sleeping with Christopher not even a day after you 'kind of' broke up the engagement? Thats wild..
"luke" cometió errores con "lorelai", pero lo que hizo ella, superó todo,el que menos se sintió engañado por lo que hizo,la reacción de tristeza de él,da hasta lastima, aunque él se lo busco también.
Yeah I may be the only one but to me Lorelai was 100% out of line. Luke prioritizing his relationship with his child is literally what makes him the amazing father he is. He waited 8 years to marry her and understood immediately why Lorelai put off their wedding until she was on good terms with Rory, cause that's her kid. He never expected her to prioritize him or them over Rory. Ever. The fact that she flipped out because all of a sudden she was the one waiting because she was no longer the main priority in his life is wild to me. Did he do everything perfectly? No. But the man was walking a tightrope terrified of losing access to his child because he has no rights. He was doing exactly what everyone knew Christopher should have done from day one. Lorelai had to know he wouldn't respond to an ultimatum out of the blue. He needs time, he's always needed time. And then to just pick up and sleep with Chris immediately afterward was even more proof that she was just throwing a tantrum. If she had gone to Luke and just talked to him like she did when they weren't dating he would have understood and probably agreed to the elopement.
When Lorelai and Luke got engaged the first time and Lorelai wanted to wait until things are right with Rory therr wasnt a set date or making plans and money wasnt lost. When Aoril came into the picture dates and planes was already made and Luke postponed the wedding not Lorelai. Plus Lorelai had to cancel all her plans. They never set another date for the wedding.
@Laurie Carson OK Luke waited 8 years for Lorelai to get a clue and then after they got engaged he still had to wait for Lorelai and Rory to sort out their business which honestly took a very long time. But he respected her wishes. You seem to be implying that Luke didn't deserve that same courtesy, and that she didn't owe him some basic communication. Now I will be the first to admit that Luke didn't handle everything about April perfectly, but he was doing the best he could with what he had to work with, even if in the end is want what Lorelai was willing to deal with. This idea that people will magically change into perfect partners without communication or honesty and work involved is nonsensical. She sat there and pretended everything was fine then flipped her shit on him, issued a last minute ultimatum and ran off to sleep with her ex. She spoke to everyone but Luke but he was supposed to figure it out through osmosis or something. We can agree to disagree. I see your point but it honestly only takes Lorelai and her needs into consideration and ignores Luke entirely. Frankly my main issue with the show was the lack of growth in Lorelai and Rory.
"My life isnt really real to me unless you're there and i'm sharing it with you" said the guy that refused to tell her he had a child and blatantly told his fiance he did not want her to meet this child or have anything to do with her even though he claimed he wanted to marry Lorelai. What was he going to do after the marriage? Have two families? Luke screwed up big time with the April thing.
I think what’s sad is that she didn’t wait for him to come to her and just went to Chris. It’s just sad and wrong, actually it says a lot about who or how she is.
I don't know why I keep hurting myself watching this scene.

@@heatherhoward8064
**SPOILERS **
Haha thanks! Sometimes I feel weird about having so much to say 😶
I remember the Martha's Vineyard scene, but the only thing that they discuss there is the postponement of their engagement. April doesn't come up at all. At this point Luke still thinks that Lorelai is fine with the April situation. There's even one point in another episode where Luke says something like "I appreciate you giving me the time and space to work out this stuff with April" or something like that and Lorelai is like "sure, no problem."
I will agree with you that hiding April for 2 months was the worst thing that Luke did.
Though causing a fracas in his place of business doesn't seem like a problem to me -- not when Luke himself screams at customers and sometimes physically throws them out the door :D
And Luke didn't give Lorelai a hug, or any kind of reassurance (other than the same empty promises he'd been mouthing for months). He should have said, "Hey Ceasar, take over, I'll be back later," and taken Lorelai back to her house or his for a talk. Maybe said to her, "Okay, I can't get married right this minute, but let's set a firm date."
Lorelai selflessly supported him, backed him for months (no manipulation at all -- and Lorelai would not have tried to manipulate him in the future, she's not that kind of person) and all it got her was stomped on and ignored.
Despite everything that Luke did, I still love him
Luke did nothing that he was hesitant but he never treated her badly
He admitted that he used April as an excuse to push her away sooo..yes he hurt her. On purpose.
@@bettersecret1499 I think he did it subconsciously and then realized how much his actions hurt her after they'd broken up.
Her pajamas are everything
I hate that Luke's speech is way too late. :(
Ommmmmmgggg this has got to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes ever. So hard to watch
They both self sabotage smhhh
Better than sleep with someone in the same HOUR that happened.

@@lauriecarson6483 Do you watched the show? It's just watch to see that Lorelai sleeps with Christopher in the same hour 😉

lmaooo 😂 I felt this in my soul
@@loveGG3 he still didn't go after Lorelai. he waited 2 months to tell Lorelai about April.

Ouch - that flinch
This scene kills me
For all the hate season 7 gets the characters, all of them grew so much for season 6 and that is why I like it better.
Yeah, and it's whole situation with him giving her cold shoulder was going on for months...
this scene really is the saddest :(
Tomorrow. Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary since the pilot episode of Gilmore Girls Season 1
We’ve come a long way ❤️
this hurt my soul how luke tried to fix every thing 😭😭😭😭
That moment when your mid life crisis made you throw away the most important man in your life.
Right 🤣🤣
No, the moment when your spineless fiancé tried to cram months of atonement into one truck and a five-minute speech, not realizing that he blew it when he couldn’t be a man when it counted. When his love came to him and said, “I need you to put me first for once,” and he hemmed and hawed and hedged like a wimp. Luke brought this whole thing on himself.
@@heatherhoward8064 I disagree lorelai was horrible at communication but blamed everyone except herself.

Poor Luke
poor lorelai did you not see how he treated her when April came into the picture.

thats my roman empire.
This scene is so heartbreaking, but I think regardless if she slept with Christopher or not, her heart wasn’t in it anymore 😔
I call bull shit on your comment.
Completely agree with you
😭😭😭
No because why was he suddenly motivated to marry her right after they broke up?
"My life isnt really real to me unless you're there and i'm sharing it with you" said the guy that refused to tell her he had a child and blatantly told his fiance he did not want her to meet this child or have anything to do with her even though he claimed he wanted to marry Lorelai. What was he going to do after the marriage? Have two families? Luke screwed up big time with the April thing.
