  • #223 of "365 Days of Plants" is often called "nerve plant" for its colored venation along the leaves. They come in colors of white, pink and red, and this one happens to be a particularly large-leaved variety.
    In this video I'll discuss where it is originally native to, where I'm growing it in my home, and basics like light, watering and fertilizing.
    You can check out more of these videos here and on my IGTV @homesteadbrooklyn.
    Featured plant:

    The larger leaf varieties are much more forgiving than the smaller leaf varieties which will wilt in the blink of an eye if it needs a drink. Good air flow is key as well never letting them dry out. Fittonia you either love them or hate them.

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I think you can love 'em until you can stand them. I do think that if my floor were dirt (mind you, I have thought of it), I wouldn't mind planting them in the imaginary "understory" in my head.

    • @petercardona1559
      @petercardona1559 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@summerrayneoakes funny you should mention that as I have devoted entirely way too much thought into converting the space beneath my home office desk into an understory🙈 Fittonias would definitely play a big part in making that happen. My toes would probably be the happiest they've ever been!

      @Peter Cardona Thanks for that explanation. When she said ...”they can stand to dry out between waterings,” I thought 🤨 “Not my fittonia!” It faints if I look at it wrong, and demands its wick remain in a moat of water at all times. Royal plant is more like it. 🙄😊 I love her, though.

    There's people who love em and people who thinks it's a diva.
    I don't understand the split though. It flowers. It has a a variety of colors and it tells you when it needs to be watered.
    Panicked the first time I saw it wilt. Now though whenever it wilts on me I don't get frustrated about it because as soon as you give it a good glug it comes back to life again. No browning. No yellowing. No leaves lost.
    Wish all my plants can bounce back like fittonias.
    Do you hear that Calatheas and fiddle leaf figs? 😂 Now those are divas.

    • @markadams5009
      @markadams5009 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol you sure are right about Calatheas. Some of them will just up and die on you if they don't get enough water or humidity. I'm currently growing 3 types successful indoors which have done much better than some others I tried. My success include C. lancifolia, and C. mosaica (?) and the variety Beauty Star also. Oh, I forgot I also have one other that does well indoors C. orbifolia. Don't even think about C. Ornata though, lol that one was a real pain.

    What a beautiful plant, I just love that pink splash of color. Very eye catching. I also wanted to comment here to let you know I just finished your book! which is also how I found out about your TH-cam channel. I'm big into environmental conservation and nature, so your book appealed to me already upon seeing it in my local library.
    I have to say though, it has opened my eyes to further investigate how plants help keep us, and our planet healthy. My own parents have histories with gardening (especially my Mom) and your book has driven me to pursue an interest in such fields career wise.
    Anyways, thanks again for the enlightening experience your writing provided. 👍

    I have one just like this in my kitchen's NE facing window, which doesn't get very much light because the neighbour's house shades mine. It seems to be doing alright even in the dead of winter in Ohio! I've only had it for three months, but there are already four new leaflets growing from several points.
    I keep it in a glazed terracota pot and let it dry out a bit between waterings, which takes a little over a week right now, and I mist it a few times a day just to keep the humidity up. I was a little concerned about root rot keeping it too moist in this kind of pot, but it seems happy!

    I have a lot of these, actually. I love them, though mine are smaller in leaf size, never actually seen large like yours anywhere.
    I have 3 versions: Green with white veins, Dark green with pink veins, and Darker green with red "spilled" veins (my red one isnt like yours, the veins look like someone used too much water in a watercolor painting).
    Another thing I love about these is that they tell you when they require water: when no water is needed the leaves are solid to the touch, like a piece of paper. When they need water the leaves are mushier. I had the pink one even mush down all the way, stems and everything, and two hours after watering it was all the way up, very much alive

Well now the leaves continue to get more and more dry and crispy. I've tried to take it in the bathroom whenever we shower, i've tried low light environments and higher light areas, and it just wont seem to perk up.
