Really appreciated the straight forward explanations - best vid on this that i've seen on youtube. It occurred to me that this is like making a flemish bowstring. Really admired at you adapted tools and materials that are readily available. Also really loved the choice of backdrop for the demonstration. Perfect mood. Sunlight was at the right angle for viewing. All good.
K.... you had me at living on your sailboat (so do I!) ... I've already installed hidden eye hooks along the dock for making various kite lines, and now I'll set up for this!
Chuck... WOW!!! Just came across your channel. I saw Ohio State on your shirt and wondered if you're actually in Ohio, but then I read the TH-cam bio; which was even better... a "Christian" Fly Rodder. You mentioned that you travel, so if you're ever in Southern Ohio near Chillicothe, I would love to get on the water with a like-minded friend in Christ. ~MikeM
Thanks so much! Yeah we are originally from outside of Cincinnati but came to Florida in ‘99 to help my Dad out. Needless to say when my wife felt that sunshine we just couldn’t leave! 😂 I know we will be coming up this summer but not sure on dates yet. I’ll definitely reach out while we visit.
I subscribed 👍 I make mine a different way, but this looks equally effective. Mine don't have knots but knots in furled braid should hold up well. You have a knack for speaking in front of the camera that I'm jealous of! My videos always sound like I'm stumbling and fumbling my way around to find the words so I have to do a lot of editing 😁 Very good job and though explanation of the technique! I'll share it on my channel in the community tab, I hope it helps you out. Tight lines!
9:56 That is where you lost me. But thanks for the effort anyway. Might be a good idea to first explain the whole proces with the help of a pencil and a piece of paper.
lol, they are feo. an awareness video I did with my Granddaughters. I let them paint whatever they wanted on them. Great video, it's on this channel. 8)
Great job! I’ve been trying to make leaders without the board and had just settled on twisting my leaders rather than furling them. Just starting to furl one using your method. Did you find any knot distances that seemed the best or didn’t exact proportions really matter? Thanks for a great video, Harry.
Harry Mueller so glad it helped you out! I’ve done around 30 of these and no two are the same lol. It won’t hurt to use exact proportions but it’s not needed. I have experimented with different knot lengths but the general rule taught here have worked the best for casting. They tend to lay down better. Thanks again for watching!
@@FaithsWind I made three yesterday, two with 20# braid and one with 15# braid. I varied the proportions a bit but couldn't see any difference in the results. The 15# braid leader is quite a bit thinner than the 20#. They both turn over very nicely! I was thinking of making one up with G.S.P. thread but I suspect it would be too limp.
It really seems like if time is money just spend less on something else and buy something already made. Good job, I just wouldn’t have the time for this.
I get what you’re saying. I can get 10ft tapered for around $8 each and they last me about 4 to 5 months. From the time I get my leader bag (tools and equipment to make them) until one is finished is less than 20 mins. In less than an hour I make up to 4. These last me a couple years. The cost per leader is about 50 cents. So yeah, 50 cents vs $8 is quite a difference IF you’re doing it to save a couple bucks. However I don’t do it to save money. These leaders lay WAY better than the mono does,… but I suppose that’s just my opinion. Thanks for watching and commenting! 🍻
lol, I hear ya. It took me forever having to watch like 5 videos over and over again to put it all together... Thanks SO much for the sub! I promise more fly stuff later, just SO much to do. haha
Mark, that first threading of the needle closes the first loop. If I understand your question correctly that first knot will be the exact same as the other "needle" knots shown later. So, the first loop that connects to the first hook is about 1 to 2 feet, or about 1/3rd the way down. Gesh, that was harder to explain than it should have been. lol.. Hope that helped.
@@FaithsWind Thanks, I just ordered some plastic gears to see if I can make something to spin both sides at the same time. Wheels are turnin as squeeky as they are. LOL I knew my old Sears screw gun would come in handy one of these days ! So far so good !
Thanks for the honest comment. Sorry it was confusing to you. I do my best to bring the important points to light but it’s hard to do sometimes in such a short video format. I’d be happy to answer any questions you have to the best of my knowledge. Just send your questions with timestamps and I’ll try to get to them in a quick manner. Thanks again for the comment.
Wow great video and great job explaining. I will definitely be trying this
Thx so much. Glad it helped you! Thx for watching.

Tim Apple Thx so much for watching. That back drop is where we live. Lol We’ve been aboard for over 11 years now.
Great tutorial. Got a spool of 20lbs test braid sitting on my desk. I'm going to give this method a try. Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure Gunny! It's really pretty easy overall.
We recently heard about furled leaders for fly fishing. That's so cool that you know how to do that!
Fishing FinAddict sometimes educating oneself is the result of an empty wallet.. haha
Great comment!
Had to come back and watch again as I wish I could live on a sail boat.
lol, loads of projects on our boat in the next couple of months. Doing some fiberglass work this weekend and I can't wait to film that.

i've seen this done with polyester (overlock) thread. looks incredible limp and supple. propably the closest thing to draditiona silk lines.
Cuda FX hmmm, now I wanna invade my wife’s sewing kit! 😹
What Pound test line do you use?
I wanna say 20lbs. I have done about 10 more since then and they are all 20lbs.

Check out Joan Wulff’s books - you may have already - writings on the physics of casting.
Clark Rector thanks so much for the info! Hmmm, I wonder if those are on audible.com..?
wind knot are not the wind. Wind knots are actually poor casting skill.
What size braid are you using?
Yeah, I get that. I was probably taught wrong. 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting!
cool
Ingenious, but boy am I losing the will to fish. R.
I love to fly fish, but not to good at it cause i dont do it enough....
Unlike most of the comments, you totally lost me. I’ve even made them with fluro one mono before. I was hopeful, but ended up frustrated.
