    In florida the house wrap has to be folded inside the window opening on the sides and bottom , the house wrap is left out of the window hole at the top to overlap the window

    I cut a hole in the 1978 RV and made it fit. Used higher grade insulation around the edge, but it works great. Plenty quiet for sleeping. Used my Dremel to cut the aluminum siding and jigsaw for the wood and insulation.

    Great video on how to simply install a window! Thanks for showing the details of how to layer the flashing and seal everything up, but not extend the video out 2 hours long! Confirmed my understanding and now I can proceed with confidence knowing it really isn't that hard to install a window, especially since I'm going to be doing it on an outdoor storage shed. :)

    I’d put flashing on the side 2x4’s before installing my window and never put caulking on the bottom nail fin. 👌🏾

    Nicely done bud. You had me a little freaked when you cut the paper back rather than wrapping it into the opening, but you totally redeemed yourself with the window wrap (we have something we call "blue skin that is basically the same). This is a bit different from how I've done the procedure, but it seems to hit all the right weep and drainage issues well. Love the "F-bomb" rating system! lmao. Keep up the good work!

      Mr. Fix It I'm in Alberta, Canada. I'm not sure the actual brand name of the membrane; it may actually be called Blue Skin. Haha. Anyway, good job sealing up that window! I did have a window manufacturer suggest that I leave the bottom flange unsealed so any moisture buildup can escape that way. We can get a fair bit of temp variation here, so condensation can be a real bear to deal with. Where are you located?

    I've never used caulking on any of my windows. I use bituthene or similar products. Never any leaks. I use to work with a contractor who built custom homes for about 40 yrs. He hated to use sealants or caulking as a means if water proofing. He would've yelled at this guy for using all that goop. But In the end, everyone's got their own method. Good job👍

    Nice vid, however, I wouldn't caulk the bottom nail fin,to allow a path for moisture to escape, and I would "skip-tape" the top of the window to the house wrap using your reasoning at 2:11 in the vid.

    You don't need to caulk your window flange, but if you do, DON'T caulk the bottom flange like this Yahoo did. Any moisture that does get in will be trapped if you caulk all around. Those little gaps he left will fill in with caulk once he nails it down

  • @1man4JC

    I really appreciate your video! After seeing other methods, I think this is BY FAR the best way and I'm going with it.
    Question: Should the nails be driven in so hard? One window manufacturer said to not drive the nails in fully. I know vinyl siding requires loose attachment because of temperature expansion. But with the sealant holding tightly does it really matter anyway? In fact, I'm concerned that loose nails would prevent the sealant from being pushed in fully and the sealant would be stressed by expansion. Any comments?
    Another question: At 6:53 it looks like you tape the tar paper down completely (over the top) but I read one installation instruction that said to put a few small strips so that water behind the tar paper can escape. Any comments?

    I do 2 things differently:
    1. Use “FlexWrap” to water proof window sill. Seamless and way faster to install.
    2. Do NOT caulk the bottom of the flange. The bottom flange should be an escape route for water just Incase.

    Hi there did you pull permits for that addition❓ The reason I ask is because most inspectors I deal with wouldn't of passed that window for inspection you installed the flashing wrong with the first one on the bottom then you set your two right and left side then you can install the window then you can install your fortified housewrap on top of the top nail on flange that's the proper way to do it but it's cool. Doesn't look like you're putting Stucco on that addition are you wrapping it with T1-11 or bat and board siding or shiplap just wondering❓ lotta good info though man you have cool videos😎👍🏻

    Are all American houses just wood and paper and waterproof taping? In the UK practically all houses are built with bricks and mortar with air gaps containing insulation and our winters aren't nearly so severe as some American states. Old UK stock have single brick wall so less efficient.

    • @TruSpec_Gaming
      @TruSpec_Gaming 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We stuff the walls with insulation and then add a plastic cover to the interior. In the u.s each climate zone has diffrent specs on insulation requirements. Most new houses are 2x6 walls and use a higher r-value insulation. We also are changing where and how we insulate to help make heating and cooling more efficient. So from outer edge it should be siding, water proof house wrap, osb/plywood/ shiplap, then 2x4 or 2x6 framing with spray foam/ blown or rolled insulation in between studs on a 24 or 16 inch center, plastic secured over the studs then Your interior wall cover. And if you find a decent contractor there are many additional steps taken to ensure water proof/ airtightness of the home.

      Brick and mortar is far more expensive. Perhaps you don't have the access to all of the building materials we use here. That may also explain why an average middle class family here can easily afford a 4000sq ft home whereas if we moved there we'd be in an apartment with a kitchen the size of my closet

  • @asfodhell

    I've been selling and installing windows for 10 years (in France), and the way it's done in North America makes me laugh so much :D Between the wooden walls, the nails and that dodgy wrap ... Maybe I'm just spoiled by all those rules we have over here.
    Regardless, I really like your channel ! Keep it up :)

    • @asfodhell
      @asfodhell 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's pretty much always from the inside, which allows for the window to fully open by having it flush with the 100 millimeters "dry wall". Minimum legal thickness for a window is now around 60 millimeters, built-in extensions are filling the gap to the wall. We use L shaped mettal brackets to link the static part of the window to the wall, making sure to attach it in the most durable spots (not flush) without piecring any holes in the window frame.
      Dry wall has to be finished after the installation as it covers the brackets and slides "inside" the window frame.
      If the wall isn't made out of concrete, or that an exterior hard finish can not be achieved (usually with cement, we apparently love that stuff), we cut to size some L shaped PVC to grip around the opening, encasing that exposed part of the wall.
      We do all this only when it concerns a new hole in an existing wall.
      Off course we use the proper 5x5mm rule to apply silicon glue.
      In the cases of replacing an existing window, or for a new construction ; steps and methods are completely different.

    • @Breathe618
      @Breathe618 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you buy an out of square window from the factory you have bigger issues. The rough opening only needs to be level because trim/drywall/stucco/siding will cover it up if it's out of square anyway.
