  • On Saturday 14th October 2017, another major milestone for the Diesel Traction Group based at Ferrymead Heritage Park was achieved when the first engine testing of the sole surviving member of the Di class, no. 1102 built by the English Electric Australian works in Queensland in 1966 was taken place. Around lunch time, Dg 772 took Di 1102 around the turning triangle on the Ferrymead Railway in preparation for the first start up and bearing checks on the engine while stationary. After these checks were done, the Di moved under its own power, for the first time in almost 30 years since the withdrawn of the NZR Di class in 1989 and ran some slow test runs under its own power with Dg 772 dead in tow. We capture the start-ups, and the test runs along the back leg of the turning triangle including some cab footage. In the afternoon, the long hood doors were re-attached and Di 1102 ran a couple of more runs along the Branch into Moorhouse station before the DTG crew had a group photo taken and drove Di 1102 into her shed for the first time under her own power. All that is left to do to get 1102 fully operational is further testing plus some more cosmetic repairs and a repaint before it can be certified for use on New Zealand’s national rail network, a big congratulations is well deserved for the DTG team and we look forward to seeing more exclusive Di action in the future!

    Interesting to see the internal parts working. Well done to all involved.
    And despite the shortcomings of the Dg, they were a lovely looking loco. Same with the Df.

    Some lovely EE sounds here. Interesting to note the drivers key is the same as the British one.

    Good job fellow preservationists down under, visited your site 6 years ago and a huge progress has been made on this loco.
    I like the sound of those inline 6 CSRKT engines, basically a class 37 engine with one bank chopped off.

      I'm a retired engineer and I would like to know who built that prime mover and how much horse power they are. How much does that locomotive weigh? That is 3'6" gauge, isn't it? I think that has got to be the worst coupling system I've ever seen, nothing beats the buckeye couplers.

    • @Tom-Lahaye
      @Tom-Lahaye ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gordonvincent731 The builder of the prime mover is English Electric, and it produces about 750-1000hp. (sources give different numbers)
      And NZ indeed has the 3'6"gauge.
      The locomotive is pretty light at just 64 metric tons, I believe that that is 70 short tons, on 6 axles.
      So that's just 11 ton axle load, as these were designed for lightly laid branch lines.
      The so called chopper couplers on this locomotive is an old style coupler, NZR does use buckeyes for many years now as they were safer to use as they lock in coupled position, and don't need hands on uncoupling.

    That engine reminds me of the ALCo inline-six engines that were in some of their first locomotives. It sounds similar too.

    Those old electric toys in the background tho, I see EO 45, a Ganz Mavag EMU, and is that an 88 Seater RM railcar?

    • @rickydonutrm3165
      @rickydonutrm3165 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No Reflex. That is a Vulcan raicar. Older, and smaller than a Drewry 88 seater, but much more reliable over the years.
      Had a Frichs engine, and when you walked past it while on the move, you could see it jumping around, as it was bogie mounted. Rather frightening, but you got used to it.
