This is one of NOFX masterpieces. Happy you choose to react. I can’t really understand how you don’t like it. but just tastes. I know in metalheads is different to understand melodic hardcore punk. To me it is one of the best page in music. Bass solo is AMAZING !.. And all song long . I LOVE this song
This isn't typical of punk, as far as song length goes! Punks usually short lol. For me, I guess it comes down to time and place, my teenage years when it came out and going to shows in the California scene, it was a behemoth everyone talked about. Just trying to get different genres on the channel as well as share bits of my musical identity :) back to Caligula's horse lol 😘 Deeper in now..yes, it's ALLLLLLLLLL about the lyrics lol
Holy crap, this is the first NOFX song you’ve ever heard? Maybe not the best first song to show you lol Definitely my favorite band though, I perhaps would have suggested a song that wasnt 20 minutes long 😂
The Decline is not a punk song, its a punk opera. Its pretty much in a class all its own. But just like everything, there are different kinds of punk rock. If you think youd like rock overtones with your punk id suggest something like No Use For A Name - The Biggest Lie. Overall, though, as another poster said punk rock was largely about message and the anger / frustration behind it. Early punk could barely be labeled music, but it eventually grew out of it while keeping the original framework and ethos.
First of all, great reaction. I like NOFX a lot, to me they are just outstanding, but i also understand that they are not for everyone. Its allmost refreshing to see a honest reaction. Huge respect for being that open minded and give the song a chance, please stay like that
As a huge NOFX fan I'm so happy to see them on your channel. Not the best example of a NOFX song but as this is about the same length as some of their albums, this should be viewed as an album with a common theme Personally I love it You should definitely try out more NOFX, Fat Mike is an amazing lyricist. Hope to see more punk bands soon 🤘
A non punk fan reaction to NOFX is the best reaction. Doesn't matter if you like it or not, it is what it is. To those of us that need this music, its fucking gospel. To someone else, it makes no sense, and I'm good with that. Glad you at least gave it a chance either way. Watching you try to digest this was awesome.
I respect your honesty. You are good in my book. It's not for everybody. Appreciate you diving into uncharted waters. Also, if you want to listen to a great punk song, check out "Along The Way, by Bad Religion. Short and sweet.
I grew up loving nofx starting with punk in drublic and then checking out older stuff like liberal animation, trying everything in between, sm airlines, ribbed, white trash two heebs and a bean, and then getting pump up the valuum when it came out. I loved em, but i will admit, this song took a few listens to really grow on me. I totally get how it would be hard to just sit through that whole thing in one go. Most songs for me take a couple listens for me to really love them.
Least your honest, music is so personal to everyone and maybe a 18 minute tune probably not the best to introduce yourself to punk music. I’m English and by all accounts I should love the Beatles I know most people I know love them but apart from a few tacks I don’t really like them. But however there’s this little band from America who knocks out classic tune after another and this being one of there best. I love the complexity of this track it’s layers, flow and message, it’s just a incredible experience to sit to and blast out. The live version with the orchestra at Red Rocks is just a absolute masterpiece.
Hey buddy, I found you looking for Vandals reactions but found this and as a fan of NoFX watched your whole reaction. You should know a couple things. This is not the best example of punk and honestly not the best example of NoFX. Please don’t give up on the genre it’s really good stuff. But hey if I’m paying for a song reaction hell yeah I’m picking a long ass song. From NoFX try Dinosaurs Will Die, Linoleum, Bob, Fun Things to Fuck, or Monosyllabic Girl For other good standout punk rock try: The Vandals - Let the Bad Times Roll, It’s My Birthday, or Hitler Bad Vandals Good Rancid - 1998, Olympia WA, I Wanna Riot, or Radio Operation Ivy - Officer or Room Without A Window Bad Religion - I Want To Conquer The World, Do What You Want, or Against The Grain Death - (honestly any song but there’s also a metal band called death and they suck) Edit: also Misfits - Some Kind of Hate, Where Eagles Dare, Hybrid Moments, The Bruiser, Scream (Avoid Last Caress it’s just for shock value, Misfits are Horror Punk and mostly about B Movies) Dropkick Murphys (American Celtic Punk)- Rose Tattoo, Flanagan’s Ball, Fairmont Hill One last edit: Dead Kennedys - Police Truck or Shrink The Cramps - Bikini Girls With Machine Guns, New Kind of Kick, All Women Are Bad And last but not lease The Buzzcocks! - What do I Get, Even Fallen In Love, Why Can’t I Touch It
No worries if that’s not your thing. It’s highly regarded in the annals of punk history though. And the format you describe was a foray into a first of its kind… though it does sound like a mix up mash up mess, that’s sorta punk sometimes anyway isn’t it? it is indeed a unified piece with multiple parts. Instead of breaking up those parts though they held the theme or integrity of the album together by connecting those parts. But I agree it’s probably not a good introduction. If you want to hear some great variety and one of their best behind this one, check out punk in drublic. Another of their masterpieces. Or for similar lyrical content War on Errorism is also fantastic.
Yeah I totally understand that someone dont like this kind of music. I personally love punk rock and I have listened punk +30 years. But I understand if someone dont get it and its just like I dont understand rap music and I really dislike it! But I try to be open to different types of music and I also listen to swing jazz and classical music… But good reaction and those Fat Mikes baselines… uuhhhh mama!!!
NOFX has a lot of songs that are 30 seconds to 1 minute long. Many times in a concert would play 6,8 even 10 of those short songs non stop. When The Decline was released it reminded of that, except that lyrically it had a common theme. This is mutli track ep without the tracks. Its a "Punk Opera" I can get he didn't like it being it's his first listen to NOFX.
@@hyrumgomez3969 If you've listened to NOFX for a long time, I can understand that, but if you've never heard them before, this is not the song I would typically recommend to people, unless, as the other commenter stated, they were into prog or math.
The song fits onto the pink floyd film if you start it from the second lion roar at the beginning of the film . Then the song makes a lot more sense . Good reaction btw , it’s not for everyone.
Hey mate, please try some more Zappa, Zoot Allures off the studio album of the same name or Black Napkins, and back to Sleep Dirt and play Sleep Dirt, you might be surprised, most of Zappas’ albums are contextual. Try this time to do your research beforehand. {-
This song needs more listens to be understood, to know the different parts, to get realized that has kind of mini songs in it, slow, fast, hard, soft... maybe if you try a couple times more it would get better for you. There are some good piano covers on youtube, maybe you could start from there
As a general rule. Punk is more about message and less about music. It's almost like an abstract art piece. It stays as close to music as it can, but far enough to be comfortable for most people. Personally, I have never liked Punk very much. It's okay, but for me it Thrash came along and did everything punk was doing and added more musicianship. And overall did it better.
Their music are more powerful cause the other styles are too boring even I love all styles like classic, funk, blues... .. Punk rock or rap are truthly interesting 💪🔓🔓🔓😃
I didn't like it either. Which is pretty much the typical "punk" experience for me. So far the only song by NoFX I had heard was "Kill All The White Man" and that's actually quite fun, especially because it starts as Reggae and then kicks into gear later. They used to play it in my favourite club back when I was 19 or 20 and that change came to a huge surprise to unsuspecting Reggae fans quite often.. Especially because the dance floor suddenly turned into a mosh pit...
This was really hard to listen to and it's definitely not for me. Usually a punk song takes 2 minutes and it feels like they forced all these mini songs together.
99.99999999% of punk songs are under 3 mins have at it. This is a rare sample of human art pushing beyond the boundaries. I love a fast punk song, I also enjoy the fact that this song is like an entire event. It’s not random songs throw together that’s pretty ignorant to say obviously didn’t actually listen to it to think it doesn’t have structure continuity and clever uses of changing speeds and directions. For me personally I love the tone and the playing off scales pushing into weird notes that somehow work. Again for me it’s art it’s not just a song. Thousand of punk songs come and go. This one will be in history
This song is and always will be a masterpiece of truth.
Totally respect your opinion, NOFX are a political band, this song is probably regarded THE best punk rock song ever written
It IS the best song every written, period.

One of the greatest songs ever written...if you don’t get the music you should probably listen to simple songs like every country song ever
Ok buddy 👍
This is the dumbest comment ever.
Easily the best punk song ever made. Lyrically and musically.
think of the song as a montage of different viewpoints of living in the "American Dream"
Be home stay safe. COVID prediction right there

Yeah, this was a very experimental track for this band. This is probably the worst "first track" to listen to by NOFX.
