The first time trying something on a skateboard is always the scariest. But once you try it you'll be able to do it without fear even if you didn't get it the first time
“Look, reach, step, go” absolutely works. I’ve reminded people “no brain, no pain”, the less you overthink it, the safer you’ll be. Keep doing what you do, dudes!
I got my board two months ago and just did my first ramp today and fell a lot until I just said “screw it” and just went and then I did it perfectly. No brain no pain
The natural tendency to lean back comes from a lifetime of leaning back when we walk down steep hills. You gave to force yourself to do the exact opposite of that on a skateboard
Got my first skateboard the other day, its just a really old one I found in the garage I'm 25 and never skated a day in my life before, been skating a grand total of 2 day now 😎 all ready got a busted knee!! Carnt do any tricks yet I carnt even ollie lol but I spent the last two days just trying to stay on the bloody thing and I can now skate to the shop and back with out falling off!!
You actually taught me HOW to drop in. Everyone else says just commit and they act like we know how to commit with our fears. You though, made it so easier
I’m 40 and I dropped in on a 4 footer -for the first time ever - today. I can street skate and Ollie and hit some basic tricks but never skated transition. This is best advice here!
afraid to say I must be one of the few people to have stacked it forwards, after a 20 year break from skating I decided to hit the skatepark again in my late 30s. I remembered from when I used to skate that the key to dropping in was leaning forward so put everything into leaning forward, i didnt even give the board a chance to keep up with my body, instead just through myself straight into the bottom of the ramp, gnarly. Its been another 10 years and here I am again about to go do it all over again
I think rolling up and down the transition a few times first really helps as it gets you used to how to lean back and forwards in and out of the transition
Dang man I’m getting back into skateboarding after 4-5 years of not because I’m getting my 7 yr old son into it. I’m here learning how to drop in after all these years and find dale decker all over again. Was subbed to your channel years ago on my old account. So happy I found you again. You Still have great quality videos and advice. 🙏🏼
This was cool, where were you guys when I learned to drop in. I slammed my third try and landed on my wallet... huge bruise. Six feet is my highest drop in now, too scared to go from higher. Thanks for being you.
So I watched this literally with my foot on the board and my board on the coping... This gave me the Confidence and I tried it for the first time. Didn’t do it. But I did all the motions and was a lot more confident for the next time.... NAILED IT. And now I’ve got it down! Thank you @Dale. 19years old and finally did it.
In addition to what you said about bending the knees, I found holding/touching the nose helped me learn a lot faster when I started dropping in. I do this when I drop in on something I feel slightly more uncomfortable with, i.e. pool coping, so that I feel more confident.
Perhaps the #1 mistake I see people make learning to drop in, is keeping their back leg strait. They hear the advice to slam their front leg down, but with the back leg strait and locked, they can't get the front trucks on the ramp. 2 tricks I use to break people of this: 1. A variation on your tip to reach forward - I actually tell people to touch or grab the nose of the board. This forces them to get their weight lower and keep both legs bent. It usually also serves as a cue to keep their body moving with the board. 2. If they continue to have trouble, I tell them to think more about picking their back leg up than slamming their front foot down. If you look at your video, you'll notice your back leg position changes a lot more than your front leg.
Haven’t tried my first drop in yet, I’m really consistent with just casual cruising and I’m working on my ollies, shuvits, tic tacs and manuals. Thanks for this video! Ima try this week
doing the what i call "commiting but not commiting enough" made me fuck up my ankle, but i was lucky because ramps arent really that dangerous as other obstacles, so i tried again when i felt better
Yo man, I just started skating a few months back when quarantine started, and this is easily the best skating tutorial video I've seen. Cutting in to relevant clips of you doing it right (or slams lol) makes it so much easier to follow than those weird tiktok 'tutorials'. Can't wait to hit up my nearest park tomorrow, i gotta take revenge on that half pipe
tip: Tighten your trucks if youre a beginner dropping in. Reason: First time I was learning i had loose trucks, got the confidence, tried stomping down and sprained my ankle as my front foot twisted sideways onto the board. Next time I tried and got rid of that variable just learning to drop in and get the feel I did it first time.
Hey, I just learned to drop in today! I ended up falling forward. The smallest ramp I have is a 5 ft half pipe and and I just slammed my front wheels down and the board shot out backwards. I proceeded to eat it. Got back up and hit it on the next try. Love this sport.
I kinda just got the footplacing down where I feel safe, didn’t really think about it and dropped in. Worked out really good and my reaction (the thing was filmed) was priceless as I was expecting to just fall but Atleast wanted to just go for it and didn’t fall in the end

I wish this video was around 20 years ago, I remember telling a girl I could drop in and would show her at the weekend, I had 3 days to learn how to do it and took many falls over the hours but the pressure of trying to impress this girl pushed me to finally achieve it! We're married with 3 kids now and that's why I'm here to give tips to them 😁 (I stopped skating after an ankle and wrist break over 10 years ago)
Thanx for this. I’ve recently learned to drop in 2 weeks ago. Took some spills as I’ve tried to push myself. Nursing sounds as I write. Any advice on the next level medium height drop ins? I tried the side a pool the other day (taller and more vert) and nearly killed myself. I should add I’m 55 years old
I’ve learned how to dropped in and did it first try and then after 3rd day I was comfortable and confident trying it but then on the 3rd day I dropped in again and slammed forward and hit my head
Dale Decker sadly I did not get footage of it but my one of my friends saw it happen but I’m not sure what I did wrong what I was assuming was I possibly leaned to front or it was my board at the moment was a little snapped in the center so when I probably dropped in the board Springed/bounced me forwarded
This how to is the best one I’ve seen on dropping in. It really showed me what I was doing wrong, and I dropped in successfully for the first time today. Thank you so much guys!
One thing I found useful when learning: with all your weight on your back foot, and barely touching the board with your front, try falling forward without putting any pressure on the front of the board, and without the board moving at all, like you want to fall forward onto your side. At the very last moment of this freefall, when your brain tells you to avoid it, do the stomp and put everything on your front foot. Your can actually practice it without the board. It is esppecially helpful if you want to start practising on straight ramps without coping, where your board is likely to roll backwards if you to the whole thing too slow. But even if the ramp has coping it helps to delay the stomp, so you are more likely in a perpendicular position relative to the board.
Me when I learned how to skateboard a month ago: yea I’m gonna nail this 3 foot drop in, this is gonna be like the easiest thing ever My brain when I’m up there: your gonna fall on your head, you need more practice, your gonna fall, you will injure yourself and you can’t skateboard again, your gonna embarrass yourself, your not ready, your gonna break your neck, you will get a serious head injury, Me after those thoughts: yep Im gonna go back down
Ive been looking for a video like this for daaaayys! All those other people say is to push hard with your front foot and thats it... I fell every time I tried it but when I watch this it makes SOOOO MUUCH SEEENSE! THANK YOOUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!
Just put your foot above the 2 front screws closest to you, And kick your board as hard as you would trying to snap it, but except for kicking only with your leg, drag your body down with you with your leg when you kick
I finally got over the fear of dropping in! I keep falling though but my friend say that my ground foot is too close to my back foot that’s why I keep falling backwards so I listened and I did it and didn’t manual down the ramp but did fall at the end but honestly if you just stomp, lean and make sure your footing is correct then you are good to go
So today I tried my first major drop (4-5 ft high) and I did it first try. I started skating a while back but stopped because I really had no reason to be there. Recently I learned how to kick flip, heel flip, and a pop shove it, definitely a lot of work put in to do these things.
What a cool little house basher Punk ramp you got.... Dropping in and lifting your back foot reminded me of that Bones brigade video. The art of gliding clip.....
I just dropped and i was like fuck it im gonna do it i jumped on the ramp and i sort of got off it....i fell verry hard and the first 10 seconds on the ground i thought my leg was broken...it litterly folded double :( now my pants are broken and my knee and ankle hurtsss and is bruised en bloody not a good first experience. Maybe i had to look at these sort of videos before oops but im gonna try again in a few days wish me luck😂
My thought process is ‘I’m a falling tree’. Only when the tree is at decent 45degree angle do I engage the front foot and slam the nose down. I Seems to work. After the initial customary slip-out slam.
I can drop in pretty well but once i went to drop in to a lil ramp without coping and i lent to far forward a ate shit

Heh! I changed the way I drop in a year ago and while I was still fresh at my new technique I fell forward and landed hard on my chest. Almost lost my breath, so was a bit scary :-O
For anyone wondering, first song is Gold by Cottonwood Firing Squad, then Fall by Pastel Dream, and finally I'm glad you're doing well by CFS again, great video, vibes and music
I taught skate camp for several years and what I often did was have kids stand on the transition (as if they had just dropped in without a board) and pointed out how much weight is on their front foot and the back foot was just there for support. That helped a LOT to convince them to lean forward more than they think they need to. If they still resisted, I'd have them pump on the ramp until they hit the top, and then do tail taps. That's very close to dropping in.
Dude, if you believe this will kill you dont be. There is a saying in this world "what doesnt kill you makes you stronger" and you can believe that. What you cant believe is lying ass politicians & fake ass pseudo scientists. Lock & load

Awesome advice! I wish I had this video 15 years ago. My first drop in was typical, front wheels didn’t touch, board flew out from under me and I went flying backwards. I am very grateful it was an indoor skatepark that requires helmets. WEAR A HELMET WHEN TRYING TO DROP IN THE FIRST TIME!
Thanks a lot for the video! Getting into skating at 40 I'm at a beginner/low intermediate skill level and managed to do BS Kickturns and "drop ins" from medium size ramps with the help of your tutorial. I want to get own gear as I am really hooked now :) Should I get a 8.5, 8.75 or 9" board with size 12 or does it not matter at my skill level? Used an oldschool deck (Front part under bolts wider than tail, front shorter than tail with only a little rise in the nose). Or can I use the the old school deck for what I want to do in a board? Want to learn proper ollies and a bit of bowl skating/carving for starters. Would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you if you find time to reply and have a great summer 🤙
Just one of those things to have to fully commit and do it. Once you do it, you will see that’s it’s easy and won’t be afraid and you will be able to keep doing it

Maybe i had to look at these sort of videos before oops but im gonna try again in a few days wish me luck😂
how'd it go?
My thought process is ‘I’m a falling tree’. Only when the tree is at decent 45degree angle do I engage the front foot and slam the nose down. I
Seems to work. After the initial customary slip-out slam.
OMG you're such a good teacher, I'm your biggest fan!
dans the best
Did my first drop in ever at age 37 today. thanks to you! You took away my fear.
I believe I am the only person alive that fell forward while dropping in
I can drop in pretty well but once i went to drop in to a lil ramp without coping and i lent to far forward a ate shit
Heh! I changed the way I drop in a year ago and while I was still fresh at my new technique I fell forward and landed hard on my chest. Almost lost my breath, so was a bit scary :-O
I did it on my first attempt too, but my front wheels didn't hit the floor. I also slipped backwards on top of the coping once.
Nope i did too! They told me “you cant fall foward” so i over commited and flew straight over the board somehow
For anyone wondering, first song is Gold by Cottonwood Firing Squad, then Fall by Pastel Dream, and finally I'm glad you're doing well by CFS again, great video, vibes and music
I dropped in second try but slipped back first try.
Good thing dan doesn’t have corona anymore
I was low key worrried. So glad he’s better
Dude, if you believe this will kill you dont be. There is a saying in this world "what doesnt kill you makes you stronger" and you can believe that. What you cant believe is lying ass politicians & fake ass pseudo scientists. Lock & load
Grabit Hard tons of people are dying it’s pretty serious
@@grabithard2534 dont spread dangerous information bro i know my friends dad died from it
@@daswamiboy2377 oh yah, you did the autopsy yourself and help bury the body too. Youre such a good friend.
Facts dont give a shit how your friends dad died. If someone had stage 3 cancer and double pneumonia, and tested positive for covid then died, they would say it was becuase of covid. You want to spread misinformation and fear to the public keep listening to the tv.
Dude that mini looks soooo damn fun to ride in! Wish I could be there, definitely gonna get out and skate today. Thank God the weather has warmed up.
Keen ramps made it
Who else here watches Adnan Can
Thanks for the tip! Keep it slammin and be safe. All the best!
Number one HACK: send
lol
Dale Decker I don’t think you were going to see this but I love your channel and all the slammin edits
fantastic video man. Stay loose is what I needed to hear, I think that's why I'm struggling with every aspect of skating right now. thank you guys.
Thank you if you find time to reply and have a great summer 🤙
the vibe of ur vids is unmatchable. keep up the awesome vids man
Thanks man!
what is the song at 0:10
I haven't skated in years, loved skating vert. I still loved this video. Makes me wanna skate again. Happy 420
Just one of those things to have to fully commit and do it. Once you do it, you will see that’s it’s easy and won’t be afraid and you will be able to keep doing it
Thanks for the advice, very reassuring! I'll try it this summer
This was really helpful 💯 I just started to get back into skateboarding and now learning to drop in so I’ll comment my progress as you drop more content
