First time I got it, it just clicked, and I was immediately hooked! It's such a head game. Shoutout to the two random older skaters who spent their time teaching me and my friends how to do it correctly. I started on a huge mini. It was basically a real halfpipe, but without the vert. The first time I tried it with no instruction, I bodied HARD in front of a crowd. So glad those guys saw me and spent time teaching us how it's done. I might've never kept skating transition otherwise. There was no TH-cam or Braille back then! If you didn't have someone to teach you, it was rough. Took me years and THOUSANDS of attempts just to learn to ollie and kickflip as a kid before I'd ever been to a park.

I’ve been trying to overcome the fear of turning into a back disaster over the coping, and this video reminds me of how similar all of these fears are. But of course nothing is as scary as your first drop in. Eventually you realize that you just have to take your chances with the first throw. And then boom, your body knows what’s going on and it just starts to work.

Derek going through wvery basic trick would actually be a really really natural way to show off common issues and correct them and would also help comfort level and people learning the tricks feel less foolish for not getting it right away. Sounded like a random idea thrown out there but could really actually be really beneficial and something I've never seen anyone else do. A tutorial where someone's actually learning along side you. one of our regulars at the skatepark I work at, a little kid was too afraid to drop into the half pipe, but she really wanted to learn how to, she just couldn't commit. So I just went "If you make it, I'll learn how to skateboard." well, she immediately, before I would even finish that sentence, drops in perfectly, no fear whatsoever. and keeping to my word, I'm learning to skateboard again. Something I haven't done since high school when my dad accidentally sold my board.

I broke my spine when I was 12 and I tried dropping in on a minipipe the first time - I didn't lean forward nearly enough, my board went forward, I went back and landed full in the small of my back on the pipe, I was terrified of trying it in the first place but gave it a go, but I didn't have any of my mates who skated at the time to show me how to do this so I absolutely 100% understand Derek. The rest of you are proper bros for getting him through this though, it's properly intimidating, even just trying to do it on a flat ramp!

The fear of falling is huge for some people. I'm some people. 😂
I tried dropping in on a mini ramp with absolutely no knowledge of what I was doing. It didn't go well. I basically fell backwards because I didn't know how to and how much to lean forward.
I think learning how to bail, fall, and actually drop in would have helped.

Overcoming fear is not easy, but hesitation is the worst thing. I learned the hard way when I hesitated doing a 360 on snowboard on an icy surface... I slammed badly, got a concussion (wasn't wearing a helmet then, bad move).
The sooner you get it "over with" (the sooner you do the thing that scares you), the better. What's the worst that can happen? You slam? Put on some gear and do it. You bail? Do it again, right away. The old addage "getting back on the horse" exists for a reason, because if you don't it'll be worse. YOU CAN DO IT! BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! Aaron said it, it's all in the mind. There is no spoon.

I learned to drop in on a bowl with rocks in it and it’s no wonder I smacked my face on the other side.
Now that I had scrapes and blood pouring out of my nose I gave it another try removing rocks and dirt first before sending it.
I dropped in and carved the bowl side a little and ever since then could drop in.
My story isn’t to scare you, but is an example of how much more difficult it can be given the type of drop in and no one to cheer you on.
    YOU CAN DO IT!
Just start small and eventually you will find it easy to progress.

man I still remember learning dropping in years ago and it is scary. pretty much the only advice I had was slam your foot down. I also got bodied a bunch of times in a mini, even after I already dropped in a lot, sometimes I would still just mess up and slam. so you will always get bodied sometimes in skating, you just have to get through it and try not to mess up and try to fall as gracefully as you can haha. but this was great to watch, gotta love watching someone improve and getting over fear. a lot of the fear is just never doing it before I guess, so it's like fear of the unknown, you just don't know until you have more experience.

Derek I wished I had Gabe and Aaron when I first tried to learn skate at 12yo. This one time I jumped off a meter tall ledge, tail got caught in the ledge, I fell head first my kid arms took the full force of the fall, left forearm snapped like a twig, I had only been skating for 2weeks before that accident, promised myself and my parents I would never skate again. With those two guys standing by your side you got this and much more.

meter tall ledge 2 weeks into skating is absurd to be fair

10:10 I just learned how to drop in myself, it's 100 mental. I also was like what that is so easy was that really what I was afraid of? The feeling is a very similar feeling to riding ramps, like what Aaron said when he saw you kick turn, he knew YOU GOT THIS. Keep doing it all the time, always, like he said make sure you are comfortable enough to where you don't even have to think about it or foot placement and muscle memory will do all the work. Congrats Derek!

I was lucky to half pipe in the neighborhood as a kid. I still remember my first drop in. It wasnt the drop in that was scary. That was nothing. It was what happened when I hit the other side. Turned out not to be as bad as I thought. So much fun!
