Used to think appoggio was for classical or other unamplified singers so they could be heard. Now, I've come to believe appoggio is the key to good tone, balanced vowels, range (especially the very top and bottom), legato and sustained tones as well as staccato, dynamics and phrasing. In short, I'm a fan of the saying that " he who knows how to breathe knows how to sing." With appoggio you do not need to squeeze or tighten up in the throat or vocal track. I like this video.
Exactly. Thank you, David.
I like ro think of it as ..being a bagpipe ...you need to control the flow of air ....to get a steady sound
Cannot thank you enough. I am 70. Took voice. My daughter is a high soprano.Pray she stops smoking..and sings again. I teach
Keywords : LATERAL EXPANSION OF THE RIBCAGE ! So so important. I think you're one of the only vocal coaches on youtube that has clearly stated a very important part of the breathing technique. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks!

I love this and I’m sure children would love it too!
I liked this because you bring breathing and scales together as you have in other videos but this one seems really combined and efficient . Your knowledge sharing is helping beyond❤
Awesome! Thank you for that!
Yeah, really love the way Zjee transition feels like it's really going to help smoothe my tonal onset. Singing scaries always attack one's attack😅
This is so helpful and so different from other warm ups you have. Thank you so much , really appreciate you.
My asthma has been bothering me today and I have a show tonight. I planned on doing the breathing exercises I usually do, but this popped up and I did this to start. Very helpful, spent most of the time in soft palette to keep stress off the vocal folds. This will be great for working on range later too. Thanks Jeff.
Thank u so much Jeff ! Stay blessed always for all the contributions you have made
Thank you for that! I appreciate it!
You can tell you enjoy what your doing. You’re passionate and that is one reason I really enjoy your videos. The other factor is you have a gift from God that just is effective for learning techniques for singing. Thank you Jeff
I appreciate that!
Such a good exercise. Training my mind to remember to breath haha.
Going to check this one out in my next vocal warm up
I ve tried. Sounds similar to rap exercises, but more tonal.
Interesting!
Maravilloso este calentamiento vocal... gracias
Jeff, you beautiful human! I've been needing this exact video to work on my breath. I was recently gifted an online course that is all about breathing for singers. It's brilliant stuff, but the exercise parts had too much talking and not enough exercising in them. This is perfect, and I'm gonna be using it every day 💜
All the vocal guidance is very appreciated...your voice is pleasant, and your instruction is always helpful😊👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Can’t thank you enough for all of your videos Jeff! ❤

Thanks!
Thank you so much for the Super Thanks!!! I really appreciate it!
Thanks Jeff, been focusing on my breathing lately
Always a good practice! Keep it up!
excellent !!!!
Oooooooh he got a new layout!
The ‘zzz’ sound was getting shakier as I was getting to the higher scales. Is that normal and what would the correction be? Great vid as always Jeff, you’re the best!
It's a bit tricky. Be sure to lighten up as you ascend otherwise you can end up straining, which is not the goal.
P.S. I the second to last exercise "he he to descend" is awesome. Ascending while staying on pitch has always been a struggle for me. I wonder if that exercise could be done "he he to ascend", even if the scale as a whole is moving down. ( so he he he he ascend. move down a note he he he ascend.)
Shushing and hissing... I get enough of that from my Mom! Just kidding 😆🤣
If you had to recommend a couple of videos to be practiced every day, besides this one, which videos/topics do you think I can practice every day? (I'm a baritone)
Choose the videos on my channel that emphasize your strong vocal characteristics to help out those characteristics that need work.
For example, if your /e/ vowel is well aligned, but /a/ isn't, there are videos that work on that.
Do you have a breakdown of how to do appoggio? Not sure if I’m doing it right
Yes! There are two resources I would direct you to. One is free here on TH-cam, the other isn't, and is on my website:
