    I had a 74 360 dart sport, it was matching numbers bucket seat console car with the snorkel scoop and hood stripe option. It was terrible rusty though. That one looks like it has good bones!👍

    Very cool car in REALY good condition. My aunt had a 74 Duster, which was the same car with different badging, Hers Black with White interior and a White Rallye Stripe and it had a 318. The first thing I do when I buy a classic car is I change the oil, but I I use the cheapest oil and filter I can find and then I throw a quart of Marvel's Mystery Oil in it, if it take 4 quarts I'll put 3 quarts of engine oil in it and 1 quart of MMO, if it takes 5 I'll do 4 and 1, if it takes 6 I do 4 1/2 and 1 1/2 then I'll run it for 100 miles and then I'll change it and put the good stuff in it. But I also pull the oil pan and clean it out and let the engine drain overnight, then I'll clean the bottom of the engine and put the oil pan back on along with a new gasket. An engine that's clean on the inside is easier to find trouble spots than one that's nasty and gummed up on the inside plus it just runs better, the MMO is lighter than engine oil and will push all that crap that's been building up inside the engine all those years down into the pan.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I’ll use a bit of Marvel as an additive, but I’ve never used it as a flushing agent like that. I might be worried about knocking that much gunk loose and clogging the pickup - obviously if you’re pulling the pan then you’re able to deal with that. I’m more of a live and let live type. If it’s running and happy, I’ll leave it alone. If it has problems, it was going to anyway… that’s just my take on things.

      @@DeadDodgeGarage I've been doing it for years and haven't had one clog up yet because the MMO is so light it still flows and i;ve some NASTY stuff end up in the pan, I;m also not running and running it, I'll run for 100 miles ISH. I live 12-13 miles from work so I will generally change it with the cheap stuff and MMO drive it to work for a week and then that next weekend clean it up and put the good stuff in it, I'm basically using it as a breaking in oil to clean everything and recondition it.

    I completely agree with you as far as storing the engine with coolant. I am that way with CAT diesels. I think without it...all the seals and o rings go bad. Even an engine with low miles on an overhaul will usually not last long if it was pulled from the truck and stored for a long period without coolant.

      Yep. Stuff gets nasty when it’s unpainted and exposed to atmosphere - at least around here in the damp part of the world. I’d much rather have some antifreeze with its anti-corrosion additives in there.

    I had never paid much attention to the 6 cylinder A-Bodies before. I had an old Mopar chassis book that said the V8 A-bodies from 1973 and newer with V8 engines and disc brakes got the 4.5" bolt pattern wheels. I didn't think much of it, until somebody told me that also included 6 cylinder A-bodies with disc brakes. I think those only came with 8.25" rear ends, which would seen odd in a 6 cylinder car. I later found out that for 1976 all A-bodies got disc brakes, due to federal safety standards for 1976 models. It looks like this 1974 6 cylinder has disc brakes. Is the rear end an 8.25" and is the wheel bolt pattern 4.5"? That old Mopar book was from 1979, but the article in it may have been older, since it was a compilation book of several older Mopar technical books.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You are correct that all 73+ disk brake A bodies use 5x4.5” - but there were many, many cars with a 7 1/4 rear axle and the larger bolt pattern. That’s what this car has.

    There was a day you couldn't drive more than a mile and see at least one Dart, Valiant , Duster ,Demon, Scamp, or Swinger. I had a '74 Scamp that color I believe it was called Fawn Beige maybe? It had the same old vinyl bench seat that ripped at the seams just like that one. It's slant 6 had massive blow by so I put a hose on the breather and ran it to exhaust the stink behind the car . It was a Minnesota car so it had rusty rear quarter panels. rusty front fenders etc. When I think back on it now It was really a fun car mostly because I never worried about ruining it.

    Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder as the old saw sez. I happen to love late b's with the Magnum being my fav and the 79 300 being 2nd. They are just a few parts swaps away from performing as well as any other Mopar. I even like Aspen/ Volare and dont hate LeBaron, Diplomat and St. Regis. I kinda like 81-3 Imperial and dont hate the last Cordoba/ Mirada. All could make excellent sleepers and have the underpinnings to support all of the fun stuff you want to throw at them. My favorite A body nose was the '69 Dart. But the beaks are nice too. I guess my point is all of the pre K cars are cool (there are likely some people that like them too.) Find one you like and can afford and make it cool...whatever that means to you. Enjoy and have fun!

      Personally, I think ANY Mopar that was offered with a small or big block engine can be a cool ride, and not limited to 2 doors. I think a great example is just about any police intercepter. My dad once had a 77 "Small Fury" with the 440 Police Intercepter package (picked it up at a state auction in 1980 for $750) and it was awesome. Just a tire burning piece of fun, and decent handling and braking to boot.

I've been searching the internet to find out which year, because none of the ones I was seeing looked similar. But this is the car. He lived in California and the last time I saw the car was probably 1988, when he sold it to someone else.

      @DeadDodgeGarage  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well that’s interesting. You must have been looking at regular Darts, which are much more square. This is the Dart Sport, which was built from ‘73-‘76 and is actually based on the curvy Plymouth Duster body. I don’t know what year Dylan’s uncle bought it, but it has definitely been in California for a long time. So it’s possible, but I will say, there were plenty more of them this color.

    My 340 4 spd swinger is a street car, not a race car. Mechanical secondary QFT lived just fine on it. EFI and a little boost works way better on it. Plus, 4 wheel disc brakes, 5 speed, stiff gears, and wizzy suspension makes it even better yet. I say just because Dodge screwed up the first time, doesn't mean you have to the second time. This build will be fun to watch.

      @@gbrads I don't think blocking the crankcase breather is a good idea, and I don't really understand how it could make an appreciable difference in the slant's performance. Crankcase pressure needs to be vented somewhere, or it will figure out how to vent itself through every gasket in the engine. The PCV valve will handle a good bit of this, but especially with excessive blow-by like found in this poor slant, it's probably not going to do enough. You can switch to an atmospheric breather, but again, I don't know that it will make any noticeable difference in performance.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The width of the A body axle never changed. The track of the front end was widened along with the front frame rails during the ‘67 redesign, and disk brakes push the front wheels out a little bit further, but the rear was never changed. That’s the story I know.

    I’m a Holley guy through and through. Those carbs are complete junk. Best 4bbl ever made for a small block is a 4180c off of a mustang or a 351w. Set up perfect. Just drill so it can be adjusted

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not. In fact, I’ve recently come to the realization that I strongly dislike Holleys. The gas always wants to be on the outside of them. Always. They have their place - on straight line performance cars, in a double pumper flavor. Anything other than that? Make mine an AVS2, please. (A classic Carter / Edelbrock is fine too.) It takes me moments to tune and I lose zero gas everywhere. No bowl gaskets to fail. Or pump gasket to fail. Or bowl screw seals to fail. Or needle / seat o rings, or adjuster gaskets. It’s just simple, and for a regular street car, it’s the best. Now, multiple enthusiasts have said that the Carter / Edelbrock is garbage and I need to throw them all in the scrap pile in favor of Holleys. I don’t think they understand the low horsepower world I live in. Haha. But, as always, your mileage may vary - and to each his own.

    • @nathanieljones7981
      @nathanieljones7981 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DeadDodgeGarage I wouldn't say edelbrock is junk. both companies have their strengths and weakness. Holley in KY works much better than most edelbrocks. may be the air. On Fords they work better. on GM its always edelbrock. Mopar has always been either or but I prefer Holley. the holley 2bbl and 1bbl carbs are complete junk typically.
