  • Fun Fact; back when these bins were new in the sixties, they probably only cost $2000 each to build. If you came here to see big money being spent, you're in the wrong place. We are all about savings and doing the work ourselves with what's available. I don't have an exact total on the parts to fix these two bins, but I think my title is close ish. I have been collecting bin pieces for four years now. Two of the three bins haven't been properly used in 10+ years, so I'm going to make them functional. Stay tuned for the wild adventure of making one of these hold ear corn. Last year, you saw the first bin get it's makeover with a new unload auger. If you didn't, link will appear in video.

    Jacob, I realize it's water under the bridge at this point,but drive pin anchors is the way to go. I had never set a bin until last Fall when I set two 14 footers. I used the "drill in place, rod, lift, add sealant and lower" method just like you guys did. I've yet to get floor into them yet. You did a good thing saving those bins.

LOL Hay you could have bought a few cans of Flex Seal instead of the tar to seal it up, You should call Flex Seal and see if they will send you some to use and heck they might make you a TV Star ! We might have to start calling you Jacob the Bin Star ! Bandit

    I used to build bins as kid, we bought tar in 5 gallon buckets and used a long rubber glove and spread the tar on the inside of the bin when we had a raised floor. This kept the mess inside and out of the weather. tossed the glove after the job was done.

    Looking good... that's the way to do it. Got some vid on my channel of the dealer installing a new bin dryer and fan on the BIL's 20K bin, same size as this one IIRC, up in Indiana. His old fan/dryer finally bit the dust. His slab is cracking up, even had some varmints digging under there, so he's talking about building a new slab and moving the bin over onto it, adding a second bin at some point, etc. Improving the layout and stuff. We installed a new electric panel and rewired the bin stirrators and ran new wiring for the fan/dryer and stuff, then installed a new propane line once they set the 1000 gallon tank. Works really slick!
    At least you're not just starting over with a new half million dollar or whatever facility, then dunning your subs for money to help keep you from going under LOL:) Or selling dirt or whatever just to dun money from subs LOL:) Later! OL J R :)

    Looks good. I have a bunch of bin work to do also. Mine is going to involve pouring new concrete and hopefully having a crane move the bins. Best advice I can give, is to go with an 8" draw auger. We have 6 with 8" and 2 with 6" draws and we kinda hate using the 2 with the 6" draws. Keep up the good work and good luck with the floor

    Yes dry means much better bonding. Less captured water rotting metal and paint underneath. But to put rubberized cement on concrete dry makes all the difference in bonding. In fact I don't even know if flexible silicon will even bond to wet Concrete. That old tar you chiseled off was crappy hard cracking stuff and this will hold until you are 95, then ya'll will have to redo the bin again, durn.

  • @dankrogstad6238

    You need to sell some of the scrap iron and old tar off that bin to your subscribers! Then you’ll be able to build a $1,000,000 bin site!

    Professional builders these days stand wherever and push buttons.. hydraulic jacks all linked together. 3 people and 5 jacks is close enough to coming down perfectly level to work. I’ve built a complete 24’ with 4 jacks but it wasn’t fun, probably pretty similar to 27’ with 5. Easiest thing to do on floor or even adding a ring to 27’ or smaller is to rent a good sized telehandler, put a semi tire and rim or tractor front tire and rim in the bin, lift snug to the center hole and lift the whole works with the telehandler. Anything bigger needs a crane and several cables down to the bottom. Good work on the bin, I wonder if maybe some of that Por-15 or other “rust converter” product on the rusty spots up high before some paint would help any? I know it’s good on steel, I did some spots on a grain cart a few years ago that haven’t come back through the paint yet.. but not sure how it will work on zinc coating on galvanized. You’re probably done now, but it works good to use your tar sealant and just smear it all around the inside before you put the floor in it to seal it up. If you do it from the inside the static pressure from the fan isn’t trying to push it loose from the base like it will if it’s just done around the outside. I’ve had it push some out over time that was only done from the outside. The stuff on the inside stays pliable much longer without the hot sun beating on it. (Just food for thought If you have to do another one down the road sometime)

    • @lukestrawwalker
      @lukestrawwalker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not so much the sun making the tar stiff over time, it's mostly because it collects and "absorbs" dust and of course water exposure eventually "floats out" the lighter hydrocarbons of the tar and just leaves the hard stuff behind... the dust makes it thicker and eventually you're just left with a brittle chunky stuff... OL J R :)

    The men who knew how to mix cement back even before the turn of the century knew what they was doing the floor in our barn that probably wasn't built long after the Civil War has very strong cement its got its fair share of some cracks but I don't know of many barn floors that don't even the foundation on the house my parents bought which was built 2 yrs after the Civil War has a strong solid foundation with some nice red bricks .
