Acquired my Homelite Weeder for FREE curbside. Took it home and cleaned it up. Printed manual from online but it didn't describe well enough how to change out reel. Couldn't believe I could find content on TH-cam, with your AWESOME video, and finally figure it out! Thanks for thinking about all of us future 'Homelite Reel Strugglers'!
Man I can't thank you enough something so simple but such a pain in the butt before I'm a highly mechanically inclined guy but restringing weed wackersalways drove me nuts you just showed the trick you pull the string through first then wind it up I always try to put it on a spool and put the spool back on and that was impossible and frustrating again thank you so much this will change my weed whacking outlook for the rest of my life great video!
Hi John...for about a few summers now I have struggled re-wiring this Homelite trimmer....Just followed your instructions a few minutes ago and wired in up without cursing my head off...Thank-You...Homelite owes you Big Time because I never knew how to properly string this trimmer from anything that I looked through from them...Thanks Again A+++...From Nova Scotia,Canada.
Wow! I can't believe I've never seen this video until now! I've seen over a hundred how to videos on everything under the sun and have never thought to look up a how to video on string replacement! And to think all these years I've been doing it wrong. I feel Soo dumb and relieved at the same time. Thanks a million$
I've had my homelife treamer over 6 years and today is the first time that I learned how to rewind and all thanks to your video I used to open the tape feed the string and put it back but now I know thank you!
John: I've had so much frustration in replacing the string on my Homelite grass trimmer and having it then feed out. Your explanation was simple and worked for me the first time. I then finished edging and had no problems with the string feeding out. The enclosed instructions do not mention the key - putting the string through the spool, threading it through the casing, and finally using the casing to wind the string onto the spool. Thanks so much! Steve Graham
First video I clicked on...Thank you!!! I’ve had this thing for years and was wondering why it always bound up inside the spool!!! I’ve been doing it VERY wrong!!! Nice job, thank you for the video!!
After the better part of an hour, trying to spool thos dang thing, I watched your video and had it filled in 2 mins!! And to Quote the greatest Philospher of our Time .."D'ohh!!" -Homer J. Simpson...Thank you
A very well executed tutorial John. Short to the point, coupled with your good personality. As one of your students in the you tube classroom, I thank you with much appreciation from New Rochelle N.Y.
Thank you for taking the time to share this. I got this unit used from my neighbor who was fed up with using the gasoline model. I could not get it wound after trial after trial. This has saved me having to buy one new! Thanks again!
Thanks brother. I borrowed a trimmer and have not seen this type of spool before. I have to say I had no idea. When in doubt, check youtube. And here it is. Cant thank you enough. You seriously saved my a mountain of time. Peace.!
Hey man thanks so much for this video! We did not see hole for string and have been sitting here trying to figure this out ...before we saw your video.
Thank you. Just got it as a present from a friend of mine that is not using it anymore and he said:Here , you have to rewind it LOL Straight to YT lessons I knew there are smart people out there already knowing all the tricks to do it right.
Thank you for the video! I had been cussing my homelite weed trimmer for 20 minuets and calling it every name in the book and a few new ones but with your video I got it done in just a few minutes!
Thanks showing me how to do it correctly. Like most people on here, I have been doing it wrong for many, many years. One point though, it says on the spool, at least it does on my Homelite, how much line to use. Mine says 15 feet.
So happy to not have to do it the other way anymore . One thing I will say that has always done well for me is using stihl chainsaw oil mix with 89 octane like to says . 50:1 is good for everything 👍👍. Never had any chugging issues and it makes this 26 cc scream . Not kidding , screams . I have a high power stihl and a this one I found in the trash and put a new plug and primer bulb and it’s been good for 7 years now ? Something like that .
Bob Davies I did throw mine across the yard quite a few times because of this problem, and I’m a handy guy, this video saved me from going crazy , I guess I just threw the box out and never learned how to put the string in properly, now it works like a champ
Everyone.just needs to keep im mind that these type of trimmer heads are called speed trimmer heads for a reason they were made to not take up too.much of ur time having to.reline/respool the thing every time. Speed meaning ur able to stop reload n get back to.work to get the job done faster. So u dont even need to remove the spool from the head or anything like that just measure n cut ur line n run it thru the head holes. Rewind the string into the head . n there u go good to go.
I haven't read through all of the comments, but....would you please tell us the exact model of your Homelite trimmer? I have a Homelite too, and I am wondering if this trimmer head might fit on mine version. If I knew what this one was, I could do the research.
You don't even have to remove the cap, just spin the spool so the arrows on top line up with the holes, then you just push the string all the way through.
Yeah but keep in mind sometimes depending on how.long u have had the weed eater n how.much uve used the same head on the weed eater u might not be able to even see the arrows to.line up with any more. Which happens to be mine exact issue so its just simplier to look thru the holes n line them up so u can see all the way thru..
My spool doesn;t have two slots for the trimming string. It did however come with the other piece with two holes but the spool you wind it on has no hole going through itself. There are however about 8 holes on the outer piece spaced in the circle. How do I replace the string on that type?
That looks so easy mine is a little bit different I want to know do I have to align the little slots match it up with the slots on the string below because mines different
Question, how do you get more line to feed out while the weed eater is still running. I keep having to power off the trimmer ,manually remove the cap and rewind the whole line again. It's so frustrating...
Hit your head on the ground, that makes the string able to skip a notch and release more. Don't smash it, but give it a good little bump on the ground and keep going.

Wow, this was an extremely helpful video. I've wrestled with these to the point of being demoralized and quitting!
I mowed the yard after having a few beers and am sitting outsides cursing this thing and here I am lol.
This video is gold, John. You just simplified the process for everyone. thanks.
I've had my homelife treamer over 6 years and today is the first time that I learned how to rewind and all thanks to your video
I used to open the tape feed the string and put it back but now I know
thank you!
Me, too! What a stupido I am. Can’t believe I waited so long to look this up.

OMG, i was doing this all wrong!!! I was so frustrated I threw the spool across the back yard. Thanks for your video, John. I really appreciate it.
Thanks.. I was trying to pre-wind reel before installing on my Homelite. This is much easier method.
Thank you sir! This was driving me nuts trying to figure this out. Totally different than any other trimmer I’ve used.
Thanks brother. I borrowed a trimmer and have not seen this type of spool before. I have to say I had no idea. When in doubt, check youtube. And here it is. Cant thank you enough. You seriously saved my a mountain of time. Peace.!

thank you for great vid. worked like a charm.
Do you not tighten the hub all the way once the string is installed?
Thank you so much I was about to brake the dang weed eater
This was a lifesaver! Thanks!
You don't even have to remove the cap, just spin the spool so the arrows on top line up with the holes, then you just push the string all the way through.

YOU are the man! I couldn't get the cap off, was going to start hammering it. great tip!! THANK YOU!!
The red bolt loosens by twisting to the right (clockwise)
@@jackjack4412 can u explain how, mine its too tight that i can't loosen it with hands

Thank You! I am sure this will help me not curse so much when I have to restring.!
You are a lifesaver!! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks a bunch! Really helpful.
