@@wkymole3 whatever it is, I didn't have a problem when I was younger. I used to love climbing rocks and trees and I could work on a roof and run around on 5 stories of scaffolding with no problem. In my 20s I noticed it got a little harder and now at 40,if I climb a ladder over 15 feet I'm almost paralyzed. But I can go to the top of a sky scraper with no problem and look out the window.
He was epic, a pioneer, and paid the pioneer’s price. I agree, the parachute was “marginal “ in terms of safety and more of a mental device; one could hit outcrops on the way down before deploying the chute, even then parachuting into likely treacherous terrain.
I mean, with most climbing, especially outdoors, even if you’re a strong climber, certain holds will just suck, and you can slip off it even if you’re not tired. Free soloing is really a big gamble. Of course with someone like alex honnold, he climbed el cap like 50 times, and has spent hundreds of hours on the wall, so he felt secure on it. But if you don’t expect something to be as bad as it is, or if you know it’s bad, and still slip, it doesn’t matter if you’re feeling good or not, you’re dead.
Undoubtedly one of the greats of climbing. There's a sad irony that having survived free climbing for twenty years, he added a parachute for safety then perished in a wing suit accident. RIP Sir.
I respect this guy so much for doing all he did without having Honnold superpowers. Potter seems like an actual human struggling with something incredibly hard, huffing and puffing etc
Honnold worked super hard and is just a really focused and in the Moment person. Saying he has superpowers feels kinda shitty as it looks like you pretend his talent is more important than the decades of super hard work he put in. Most routes he free soloed he climbed like 50-100 times flawlessly before with rope so yeah. More dedication and hard work than superpowers.
Really love the concept and admire this video! But hear me out REALLY QUICKLY-- if you freebase, you need to be completely aware that your parachute may not save you. Especially if you're not high enough, which you should have at least ~1,500 feet before deploying. You can obviously still deploy it from a lower altitude and it will help but you'll most likely break your legs, get seriously injured, or most likely die, depending on where you land. At most climbing altitudes (who climbs over a thousand feet without a rope besides the legends? :P), a parachute will not give you enough time to safely land, but is an awesome innovation in what is already a super dangerous free-solo hobby. editing that my point being my hope is freebase climbers do not think they are safe simply because they have a parachute, and because of that false security, compromise their climbing position. Unless they are trained and falling from exceptional height WITH a lot of mountain terrain isolation and prominence to compensate their descent angle. Worst case ALWAYS kick off the wall if you know you're going to fall while freebasing. Parachutes take 2-3 seconds to deploy, and when moving at terminal velocity that's 600-800ft. It takes around 12 seconds of falling to reach terminal velocity, so you can do the math -- Actually I'll help, the equation accounting for fall acceleration would be: v = v₀ + gt = 0 + 9.80665 *(8) = 78.45 m/s. or 257 ft/s. --- --- [sidenote: 8 is what we're using for the seconds falling until we reach the ground variable; we are using the number 8 for this equation to reach 78.45m/s, but you can change 8 to any other number to get your new m/s calculation] Be safe my fellow climbers! Enjoy a long life. You don't need a friendly stranger to remind you that your next climb is more important than your current. :)
have you seen wingsuit jumpers? Some deploy as low as 100-300 feet from bottom. Keep in mind most of your stats u proved at just "suggested". I can see why sky divers pull the cord right away with your calculations giving them 3-5X the time to slow down when hitting the ground.

Dean Potter, a famous American climber and extreme athlete, died in a base jumping accident in Yosemite National Park in California on May 16, 2015. Potter and his partner Graham Hunt jumped from a rock called Taft Point, a popular base jumping spot. Both wore wingsuits, special suits that allow them to glide during flight. On top of that, they also have fans who see them as some of the best in the world. This becomes their career and consumes their lives.
I think there are numerous factors that play into this. Evolutionarily this could also be seen as a necessary trait. In hunting, the high risk high reward tradeoffs would allow these hunters to either be massively successful or die trying. It must have worked frequently enough to allow this same brain wiring to still exist today.

Actually you have a fear of living. Way to poach a tribute video to a legend for your free psychological treatments.
He was epic, a pioneer, and paid the pioneer’s price. I agree, the parachute was “marginal “ in terms of safety and more of a mental device; one could hit outcrops on the way down before deploying the chute, even then parachuting into likely treacherous terrain.
Plus wouldn’t he be screwed if he fell in the like idk 30 ft - 200 ft height range. Even base jumping needs some height right?

With guys like this, who look this solid while climbing, it’s hard to imagine them ever taking a fall

I respect this guy so much for doing all he did without having Honnold superpowers. Potter seems like an actual human struggling with something incredibly hard, huffing and puffing etc
He did have superpowers. He was a monster technician on the rock.

Sure dean may have died but this video will live on forever. LEGEND
It takes around 12 seconds of falling to reach terminal velocity, so you can do the math --
Actually I'll help, the equation accounting for fall acceleration would be: v = v₀ + gt = 0 + 9.80665 *(8) = 78.45 m/s. or 257 ft/s. ---
--- [sidenote: 8 is what we're using for the seconds falling until we reach the ground variable; we are using the number 8 for this equation to reach 78.45m/s, but you can change 8 to any other number to get your new m/s calculation]
Be safe my fellow climbers! Enjoy a long life. You don't need a friendly stranger to remind you that your next climb is more important than your current.
:)
Minimum open altitude for BASE jumping is more like 300ft, but yeah its not a given they get clear of the wall
Parachute makes sense on vertical walls. On tilted walls will not help
have you seen wingsuit jumpers? Some deploy as low as 100-300 feet from bottom. Keep in mind most of your stats u proved at just "suggested". I can see why sky divers pull the cord right away with your calculations giving them 3-5X the time to slow down when hitting the ground.
Also dont freebase crack

Yeah it’s definitely more of a mental backup than a practical one... if you fall straight down the wall instead of being able to push away ur fucked
9 times out of 10 you can feel yourself about to fall when you are getting too pumped, or reach a crux. It gives you about 5 seconds to prepare for the fall which is plenty of time to assess your surroundings and push away from the wall.
Base rigs don't use sliders and are packed differently than a traditional chute, made to open fast.

However, as they jumped, they failed to get around a ledge and crashed into the rock wall. Neither Potter nor Hunt were able to open their parachutes in time. The bodies of the two were later found by a search team. Potter's death was a huge blow to the climbing scene, as he was considered one of the most influential climbers and extreme athletes of his generation.
