    My son and I did this over the weekend. Our crystals came out white/clear even though we added quite a bit of food coloring. Any suggestions on getting the color to take?

      Ive seen tips on how to get the crystal to have some color... You added wayy to little food coloring.. You should add Tons of food coloring until its opaque i think

    I noticed one difference between the borax and the alum crystals. The alum crystals form triangles, and the borax squares or rectangles? I have borax crystals at home, and they're all based on little rectangles

    Could you paint glue on a magnet then form crystal around it using the last method? If so you could could make a floating crystal if you placed it o top of a ring magnet. That would be cool.

    Hi, can anyone answer some of my questions?
    1) Can you use baking powder as Alum?
    2) Why do you need to re-heat the solution and add another tablespoon of Alum?
    Thank you! This is a very awesome video by the way.

    • @tinitvful
      @tinitvful 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alum is a special salt to make those crystals. Baking powder woulndt bring the same results. You need to add another tablespoon Alum because some amount already reactet with the water and got stuck to the pipe cleaner :)

    Do you need to allow the glue to dry for any length of time before letting it in the boiling solution? Also, how long should I let the solution cool the second time before putting the shell back in? This is really cool, and I can't wait to try it with alum powder! I've been making crystals with Borax, and I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

    • @DIYbama
      @DIYbama  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Second time: I think wait more than 3 hours, the reason is that hot solution will dissolve your crystal again

    My chemistry professor still has some apprehensions of making these. She thinks that even though they will be coated with acrylic that they may still cause skin irritation. I fell like people won’t excessively grab it and also that people aren’t going to be tossing it around. I feel like it is safe enough and I will put them in plastic baggies just to give it another bit of protection. But what do you think, are these crystals safe to touch?

    Instead of taking all those extra steps of reheating the solution, adding more alum and dipping it in again wouldn't you get the same effect of bigger crystals if you just left them in longer? I've seen lots of crystal making methods over the years and I've never even heard of this, you're just supposed to saturate the solution as much as possible and leave the string/crystal seed in for a few days to 2 weeks or more. Unless alum behaves differently to other salts??

The second time no crystal was created around the heart but a giant crystal appeared in the end of the heart. Moreover I would like to ask the proportion of the food coloring needed as my crystals are mainly white, although I poured food coloring. Sorry for any mistakes in the text and thank you very much in advance. Also I observed that your pipe cleaners are much "fluffier",to say, if you understand what I mean, than those that I used

    What's the chemistry behind this? What makes it stick to something and come out as crystals?

    • @promontorium
      @promontorium 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The alum bonds to itself chemically. It perpetuates its own crystalline form as more material solidifies. That's why it always begins with alum. With the little turtle hideout alum was glued to it, and the liquid alum bonded with it. Notice it only bonded with other alum. The liquid also forms crystals on its own as it cools which are more dense (than the liquid), and get slightly stuck to a surface as it grows (like the pipe cleaner in the first part), but it doesn't chemically bond with anything but itself. So if you broke apart the crystals from the pipe cleaner, you would find the pipe cleaner whole and the crystals were just clinging to it, not merging with it in any way.

    What is the shelf life on these crystals? Read somewhere that they can only last about six months. Then they start to fade and shrink or crumble. Is there a solution to making them last longer? BTW: Your crystals are SO beautiful!! (Would you please let me know. I have a deadline to meet). Thank you.

      I think I watched a video where they sprayed clear acrylic spray paint (or something similar) over the crystal to preserve the colour and make it last for years. However I watched the video years ago and MAYBE there are better solutions for it available now

      My crystals still hold, just don't toss them into wet or sunny areas and you should be fine

    I tried makng alum crystals for the first time it gives me small size crystals but when i tried to use the same solution to grow again it didnt worked. Can u tell me why?

      You cant use the same solution twice, as water evaporates the stuff begins to crystalize so if it doesnt work you simply need to make it more saturated again by warming it up, dissolving some more alum, letting it cool and then retrying. Done this when I was a kid was plenty of fun
