DIY Coilover Kit for my 62 FORD Galaxie, Retrofitting a QA1 GM Type Coilover Kit to Fit my FORD

  • My Galaxie has DIY coil over front suspension. It is not DIY in the same way that the coil over kit is on my Mustang where I made all the pieces, but it is DIY in that I modified a GM kit to work on my Ford. The kit I chose is a QA1 kit that works with a lot of GM application. It was ALMOST a direct bolt in on my old Ford but I did have to fabricate a reinforcement/spacer plate to mount the bottom shock mount to. I believe this same kit could be used for 61-64 Galaxies.

Just called Qa1 for Coilovers for my 1950 Ford F1 with 327. Gave them the weight of each tire and ride height and recommended the same shock with 700 lbs springs for my mustang II suspension. I have a flat plate on the lower tubular control arm that I will drill out and bolt the shock. I will be happy to remove the airbag suspension. Rides great but scared of a air failure and too many extra parts. Nice job on the install.

wow that truck must be heavy to need 700# springs

Another great video! I really enjoy watching your content, even though in this video you have mainly pictures as footage, you do a phenomenal job at explaining each part that you used and why you did things in that particular way! Take care, looking forward to more awesome content! 😎

Glad you like them! For me the most important thing is "why" For me personally its not enough to get information from a video that says "do this" I want to know why so that I can make my own decisions as too if it is the best way to accomplish something. With that in my mind my videos will always be heavy on the "why"

@@dazecars makes perfect sense, I like your approach and it’s helpful because you can apply similar methods and logic to any vehicle! Take care sir 👍

Thanks for the video. Do you have a part number for the shocks?

Great video ! I’ll be rebuilding the front end of my ‘ 64 Galaxie this winter . What is the thickness of the two half plates you made for the shock base ? I may go with the 450 lb. Springs as I’m keeping the big block . Well designed setup , thanks for sharing this.

The plates are 1/4" but that is overkill. Not being an engineer when I am building something like this I use experience to come up with "thick enough" 1/8" and then I increase it just to be safe. 3/16" probably would have been just as good as the 1/4" and a little lighter. As to the spring rate 450# or maybe even 500#. When I first did this mod I posted all the pix on a Galaxie forum and a guy on there decided to do the mod. He too had a big block and went with 500# springs. I know he was very happy with the result.

I’ll go with 1/4” because the front end won’t notice since it’s got a ship’s anchor for engine weight 😎 . When the adapter plate is in position on the control arm , do the two surfaces touch where the bolts go through or is there an air gap . I have new station wagon springs and bushings in the rear so I’ll be going for a raised but level look ……… unless poor handling gets in the way .
Thanks for the response by the way .

@@boblill8476 I don't remember if it makes contact or not. I do know this, I would have left it free floating so either it touches or I used a spacer between the plate and the LCA to take up the gap.

Thanks very much . This coming week it’s a new gas tank and ptfe fuel lines where needed . Doing this work in batches , last month it was a new cooling system and a 1 wire alternator to replace the generator.

Will this work for a 64 Galaxie?

The suspension for a 62 and a 64 is almost the same with the exception of the offset shafts (terrible idea) so it should work with little to no differences.
