I think that you've nailed it really; it's contrasts that make us value things. I wouldn't enjoy Scotland and the Lake District as much if it wasn't for the contrast with the urban environment that I live in. And you appreciate the comforts of a house because of the spartan nature of van life and the freedom of van life because of being fixed in a house. Without contrast, I think that we can take things for granted. Pat Nancy for me. She's such a sweetheart.
Really miss my black greyhound called Keithey boy still carry his ashes in my camper so he's still traveling with me and my 12yr old blind blue staffy 🐾🐾🐾🚐✌️👍🤟⚓❤️💯🐕

Mousehole. So lovely. Not realistic for most van dwellers looking for a bijou base, what with tiny cottages at £400K to £600k a pop, that is unless you can get a tasty gig like house sitting. In Cornwall it is almost impossible to put down roots in any coastal community, let alone the likes of Mousehole.
Absolutely, it’s such a beautiful place but insanely expensive! I try to make myself feel better about that by thinking about how it has no village shop and is so busy in summer I wouldn’t want to live there anyway 😅
A great bit of self-reflection Tori. You're very self-aware, and I think taking a journey, any type of journey whether it's semi full time in a van or a hiking trip gives your mind and soul the opportunity to evaluate your life and direction So all physical journeys are metaphors for our own internal journey . So I feel the decision of choosing one or the other isn't nearly as important as going through the process of evaluating and therefore finding the value in each. And true contentment comes from being able to accept whatever your current reality is and being okay with it. And where you have a chance to make changes then do so. I think society just raises children to have this mentality that everything in life must be so perfectly mapped out and planned and there's some sort of ultimate life we are supposed to be living. I we are 'passengers' on the journey of life which is why many people often look back and even wonder how their life got to this point whether that's good or bad. We shape our futures with what we learn, how we reflect on experiences but we cannot prescribe our lives in fine detail. And I think that's okay, and you demonstrated brilliantly the soul searching process of determining the pros and cons of both lifestyles. You touched on an important point though of sense of connection to community. Now this is important also for mental health as we're social creatures. But you're not necessarily excluded from that even if you are living in van and maybe traveling. If you can find a good community led project to be part of and you spend a little bit of time there you can derive this sense of community. For example there is a community led project in Newquay called 'Newquay Orchard' which has been built largely by volunteers, a lovely green space that is available to the whole community not just those living in Newquay. I've have friends there who live in vans, live in yurts etc but they get their sense of community from participation in the project. It's a non-judgmental community as we also support those with mental health needs and those who are marvelously neurodiverse. Maybe you could purchase a small piece of land and put up a yurt, particularly if you enjoy the freedom of being in the van and you're coming and going I can't see anybody objecting to that. I know people who do it. Just a thought but maybe there are other lifestyles that might appeal to you.
Thank you, and I think you summed it all up very well! The Newquay Orchard sounds lovely I will look it up. It’s definitely important to find community somehow and a project like that sounds perfect. Travelling is fun but I think it’s nice to have somewhere to go back to. Somewhere people know your name! Buying a Piece of land is actually exactly what I’d love to do if I had the chance, I really want to build a tiny house or some kind of semi-permanent dwelling depending what was allowed. I think being able to go on trips and then come back to that would be perfect for us, and I would love a project like that. It’s all pie in the sky really but doing that and growing some vegetables would be amazing!
@@missnancysdayoff I think it's important to have 'pie in the sky dreams' it helps keep us sane. Besides sometimes those dreams do become a reality. But if you don't dream then how can one's reality ever change? I like your dream! For me I definitely would love a forest garden ever since reading a book about it years ago. Made such a lot of sense to me, I don't know why people don't plant more fruit and nut bearing trees. Another thing about volunteering at Newquay Orchard is that volunteers are able to take a bag of vegetables home with them. Additionally the Orchard runs accredited courses in growing stuff so it's great for learning the best way to grow vegetables using organic methods. The of vegetables taste amazing! Nothing like pulling the vegetable out the ground and eating it within hours.
