Today we're looking at mooring; and specifically, the preparation of all the associated equipment and sending of lines ashore. When it comes to yachting, it's all about presenting a professional and polished image to the yacht's owner, guests and anyone watching from the dock. So, this is something you'll want to get right because any mistakes not only look sloppy but can also be very dangerous.

After watching quite a few of your “Deckhand Duty” videos I just wanted to take a moment and sincerely thank you for making all of these useful breakdowns. I’m leaving for Fort Lauderdale from Indiana in a few days to start on my courses to break into the industry. I’m still nervous about the change and know absolutely nobody in the area or industry but I feel so much better and more prepared after finding your channel. So thank you so much Matthew! You’re a fantastic teacher and I know I can’t be the only one you’ve genuinely helped. Keep it up man!

Im watching your Vid's mostly with pleasure. I am 2nd Officer on Cargo Ships with 5 years experience in rank, desiring to shift to superyachts. However please review your knowledge about heaving lines. You are not making the propper knot on it (it should be easily disconnected by 1 move), also there is no rule about 6 rounds (to be honest sometimes it is much better to make more, simple physic which i belive you will easily understand). And why you are making the knot on the end of the line? Much faster and safer is to send the line, take the slack out and make a propper knot in a good place (actually i belive that procedure can be found in COSWP).

Good advice given in the video. I’m just curious why such a large eye in your mooring line? I was always taught no larger than 5 times the diameter of the fittings it will be used upon.
I ask this because of your chosen heaving line attachment point. With such a large eye it’s very possible the attachment point will be out over the water

When are you allowed to wear shoes and is it okay to have a pair of shoes that are only worn on the boat? I have really bony feet and would never be able to go barefoot. Yes, you can have a pair of shoes for boat use only. If not shoes, some guests prefer to wear slippers around the yacht!

Hello Rifkhi. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do any videos on the tender until the summer. In the meantime, there are some fantastic resources online (and on TH-cam) about how to drive small powerboats and tenders. Yachts often use jet tenders; they behave very differently to boats with outboard (or inboard) engines, so this is definitely something to focus on.
Nobody has ever been able to answer this question for me if a larger yacht has divers why do they need to pay the marina it’s in divers down when they could just use their own just a question of the curiosity can somebody please answer it??
sorry for my dumbness in advance but its how i learn .. why do yachts not have an anchor on the aft as well as the bow ? kind regards j.a
Hello johnarrow. No need to apologise; it’s a good question. Some yachts do have a stern anchor. I once worked on one that did, but it was fairly small and couldn’t be used to anchor the yacht alone. It was good at stopping the yacht from swinging, but it was difficult and slow to operate so we rarely used it.
Hi. I just finished my deckhand courses. Was wondering what is the best advice to find a job with no experience.
Dear Tyron. Welcome to the channel! Congratulations on completing all of your courses. When you're just starting out and have no experience, your best chance is to base yourself in one of the major yachting hubs. Depending on your present location, this time of year I would suggest Antibes in the South of France. Before you go, make sure your CV is all up to date and that it highlights any relevant work experience or interests. Be very clear about why you want to start working in this industry. Then, sign up online with all the agencies you can find. Once you arrive in your chosen destination to look for work, you can go and meet all of the agencies in person and of course start walking those docks! You can find out more about this in my dockwalking video. At this point, it's all about perseverance. The more work you put into it, the more work you'll get out of it. Learn as much as you can, network and stand out (for all the right reasons). Slowly (or maybe quickly if you're lucky) opportunities for day work will come up. Arrive on time, be enthusiastic and build a rapport with the crew. Get a good written reference, get it on your CV and then get yourself out there again for the next opportunity. It's harder than ever this year but be persistent and it will all pay off. Good luck and please let us know how you get on. If you've got any further questions then please don't hesitate to ask.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Thank you so much for the information. I'm currently in South Africa and can't get a visa as yet because all the embassys are closed due to covid 19. I was thinking of going to Dubai because they issue you a visa on arrival. I'm super interested in this industry and enjoy sailing in my free time, with determination and perseverance I'm sure I'll get a job soon.

Is it possible to work on a yacht without experience?. But i have a experience on a passenger ship and barge here in the philippines
Hello Rastle. Yes, you can start working on superyachts without any maritime experience. Which department are you interested in joining? There is a lot of competition for the junior roles that don't require previous yacht experience, so the key is to make yourself stand out. Your time spent working on passenger ships will certainly be very helpful.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht im on the Deck department. I have a 2/IV certificate to be an Ordinary seaman.. i have a 7 months experience at sea.. 2 Months deck cadet on a passenger roro and 5 months ordinary seaman on a Barge ship here in the Philippines.. im olso a Philippine Navy reservist
@Rastle Client Genodepa This is some great experience. Other important skills that yachts look for in a deckhand are tender driving, deck maintenance, and water sports.

@Rastle Client Genodepa Yes, there are lots of yacht crew agencies that you can sign up to online. I can recommend Yotspot; jf-recruiting; luxyachts; Bluewater yachting. Just run a search in Google to find many, many more.
One thing I must also say is that without yacht specific experience, it can be difficult to get started in the industry without actually visiting the yachts and agencies in person. Most yachts are based in either the Mediterranean, or on the East coast of the USA. Nevertheless, it's always a good idea to start online to get an idea of what opportunities are out there.
