    I needed to see this video. I am going to do my first wedding as a photographer in few weeks (never done that, I usually only do portraits and I'm not even a pro at all) and I was a bit anxious about it, but man, this video helped me relax a bit haha. Thanks for that.

    the back-lit shots at 24 minutes are great. if I would add one tip: gel the flash so it has the same colour temperature as the lights in the background. This will enhance the illusion that the background lights are lighting them up :)

    The take away for me is:
    1/ you don't always need a second shooter
    2/ you don't always need to carry two bodies at the same time (as long as you can change lens fast)
    3/ use of blurred background in some cases
    4/ hotshoe flash attached at all times (*some might not agree)
    Thx for sharing the experience.

    It looks like he's working the Nikon G stuff (50mm 1.4 and the 85mm 1.4) the most. Until the ceremony and then like almost all wedding folks he is on the 70-200mm with no flash until after the ceremony/recessional. He's pretty damn good. Faster primes at the ceremony? Given the distance to bride and groom/subject what were you thinking? A 135mm 2.0? Also, love the troll/snark comment. He couldn't pull something like this off if his life depended on it.

    is its right to cut the arm of the bride when she is standing near the window? I think that the 85 is a beautiful lens but a little bit close when you shot indoor, maybe the 50mm could it be more helpful to use to document the ambient where the story begin

    @Ben Mcmillen : Great videos! I do a lot of weddings myself (with 90% of the pictures in natural lighting conditions) and your depiction of A Day in the Life of a Wedding Photographer is spot on. I still struggle with low-light photography (especially in a church or a reception hall). In this instance (at 16:33), what lens did you use, what aperture, shutter speed and ISO? I noticed that your flash did not go off (and I 100% approve). Thanks for the advice!

    Thanks for sharing this Ben - even if you've shot weddings before, it's always cool to see how someone works. Do you use aperture priority with TTL on the flash? I shoot totally manual (using Nikon and Yongnuo YN685 flash) and drive myself crazy changing camera settings. I was thinking if I trusted my old D7100s enough, I could use A priority then all I would have to manually change would be the ISO to give me the shutter speed I required. I just need to trust the gear and try something new, any advise?

    hello Ben maybe a silly question but when the bride and groom were walking down the isle after the kiss ,you changed lens and turned on flash and got perfect shots .....did you need to change iso settings or did you stick with the slightly higher iso from low light shots and did you set camera to ttl for the flash and standard synch speed , you seemed to set up so fast in a matter of seconds you were shooting perfect exposure on speedlight

    • @BenMcmillen
      @BenMcmillen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Harry Harrison Photography I typically shoot with 2 cameras to make it easier. But I was shooting manual. Dropped the iso a little to 800 then bumped the shutter speed to about 125th with flash on minimize natural light blur

    • @Harrys_RC_Crawlers
      @Harrys_RC_Crawlers 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thank you for your swift reply Ben

  • @aaron670
    @aaron670 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looking at the shots from the ceremony what lenses were you using. In situations such as that when you are forced to push the iso to the point that even a non photographer can tell something is going on would the use of faster primes have been a better option? If you don't mind me asking I would also be interested to know how far you are willing to push your iso in low light and if there is a point where you feel the degradation in image quality requires additional light.
    Back on topic of the rest of the wedding however thank you so much for posting this. As someone who hopes to move into wedding photography at some point, resources such as this are exceptionally rare but I feel they are extraordinarily valuable to give insight into the flow of shooting in these situations. In the future do you plan to make more of these?

    Mr Ben, thank you very much for your wonderful live demonstration of shooting real wedding, it instills lot of confidence in many amateur photographers like. me.
    I would like to know that how did you manage the colour cast of the surroundings while you are bouncing the flash?

    Ben! Love this video! Do you have all of your gear listed? I like that you're carrying a belt with your lenses. Do you still recommend this setup? I just bought a ThinkTank StreetWalker Backpack. Any suggestions? I'm thinking just stick to what I've got. Your shots a beautiful. Was the early morning prep shots with the Bride and product shots with your 85mm?

      I still have the belt for when I shoot alone at event style gigs .but for weddings I have moved away from this setup and now carry a smaller backpack. Look at my channel for a video I did a month ago with my current setup. Thanks for watching!

      Ben McMillen I will definitely. I want carry as little as possible as it is only me. So if you had to carry only 3 lenses which would you recommend? I have the 50 1.8, access and have experience w the Nikon 14-24 and the 70-200.

      @@alfiochieffallo3524 if I had to pick 3 it would be an 85mm, a 24-70 and s 70-200. For my style that's all I need
