    Love it! Elbow does well sounding regal and stately, but the band's simply magnetic when the tunes are a little bit battered, dusted up, and full of character. The songs are always gorgeous and smart, but I've missed the touch of grit that's on the early records, and this happily reminds me of those. This is a head-turner.

    Dexter = Latin for "right hand." Sinister = Latin for "left hand." Guy Garvey is obviously incredibly intelligent and his lyricism is genius. His word choice is unique and the lyrics' meanings can often be interpreted widely amongst different people. As an aside, isn't it interesting how the Latin word for "left hand" has come down through the ages to mean ominous, menacing, forbidding. Just because in ancient times, one's left hand did "dirty" tasks like toileting and touching undesirable things such as garbage, etc. while the right hand was used for eating, writing, and other "clean" tasks. Consequently, someone who can use both hands interchangeably is known as ambidextrous (with ambo meaning "both" + dexter -- so literally using both hands as you would your right hand). Guess you can see why no one would want to be called ambisinistrous, eh? Anyway, Elbow has become one of my favorite bands. I haven't heard anything by this group yet that I dislike.

  • @danpage79

    This album is great. I can't stop listening to this elbow album. I await every album they do because I know I will get music that is beautiful, fun sometimes and poignant. Guy Garvey's lyrics are darker than usual on this album. Not many anthemic songs.The death of two good friends of the band. The loss of his Father and a song written about a suicide on a train.Dexter and Sinister about the big divide , Brexit and all as well as comforting songs about love and and loss.The music is impeccable, Guy's writing is poetic. I do not hear anything on this album that reminds me of Peter Gabriel other than shared influences. I do now feel as though elbow is in the same company of Peter Gabriel. He definitely loves their music and vice versa.Still elbow sounds like good" prog rock without the solos."

    Unfortunately, for the masses, this is way too clever. So clever, that they'll miss out on, what is almost definitely, the best band and music of this generation. Elbow are The Beatles of this era: tuneful, glorious symphonies that imbue the soul; heartfelt melodies that sing to the heavens; a riotous, glorious band like no other. I pity those that never feel the glory that is Elbow. Simply outstanding.

    • @Smamf1973
      @Smamf1973 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      It's more, to my mind, a progression of their earlier work- "Bitten By The Tailfly" etc., and that's what makes me appreciate it in a different way, as I appreciate all their albums in a different way. I personally could live without never hearing "One Day Like This" ever again, but I'm probably in the minority there.

    • @uwuvision3211

      State that you love Elbow as much as you want, I won't complain, but please don't act like those who don't listen to elbow are intellectually inferior. It's just a blatant lie. Music is subjective and people have the right to enjoy whatever music they want.

    • @floolf666
      @floolf666 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @ you vision and Daniel brennan: I think the use of the word "clever" in my comment was a mistake. I think what I meant was "complex". And not because I think the "masses" cant understand Elbow's music but more because I believe that, generally speaking, most people (and this is suggested by what is in the charts) want simpler, easy to listen to music. That's not a slight on those that listen to the charts, I listen to some of it myself, it's more an observation. Ultimately, what I was trying to say was that more people should be listening to Elbow, because they're fantastic and if I came across as egotistical then I apologise because that's not what I meant. I just feel Elbow should be at the top of the charts because their music and talent deserves it.

    • @PipelinerChallenges
      @PipelinerChallenges 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@floolf666 I'm with you there. The 'populous' are generally more likely to take to an easy anthem that they keep coming across in passing on the radio - irrespective of their capabilities. Hence why I wouldn't call this 'pop' music. @uwu vision and @Daniel Brennan - chill and reflect a bit friends. This isn't about people who aren't into Elbow - it's about people who are only into the 'hits' of any band.

    This is not a return to original form. This is not a continuation of the divergence seen in Little Fictions. This is a continuation of Elbow's evolution throughout the decades. I love this song dearly because it captures the old and new sounds, whilst deliberating on the world's state of affairs. Jesca Hoop's feature is truly breathtaking as well. I cannot wait for the album. Been a fan since The Seldom Seen Kid, having listened to all of their music up-to-date. I'm forever grateful they're continuing to make music. My Number One band of all time. Have really helped me through the best and worst times. Peace and love, y'all.

      Dexter and sinister are also the names of the birds on the coat of arms of the isle of man. Dexter, a falcon and Sinister a Raven. The isle of man was Norse controlled and Hugnin and Munin who sat on the right and left of Odin were replaced. Each day when Hugnin and Munin flew from him he feared for there returns. Each day he feared Hugnin would not return, but he feared most for Munin.

    Yes! Everything's awful, and finally we have a song that captures this moment in the most bleak and beautiful way. Well done elboys, really looking forward to the album now.

    The last three minutes of this song sound like the experience of being at the Green Man festival on a sunny afternoon .

    Starting a sentence with And? Rees-Mogg will be having a fit.

      And for your information, starting a sentence with 'And' has always been acceptable.

    Wish they kept the opening 45 seconds or so on the album ...

      They did. On Spotify if you type up Giants of all sizes, you'll find two versions of the album. One will have the original Dexter and Sinister, and the other will have the edited version. They also kept the extra opening on the CD
