GREAT VIDEO!
I’m sorry dude science, philosophy, archeology, mathematics, history, biology give tons of evidence for a creator God and Christianity is the most evidentially robust faith on all the planet. It’s also way more evidentially robust than atheism. You’ve even shown that evidence in past episodes for genesis. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Allegedly...
@@erichloehr5992 no not allegedly but actually. Look into it, evidence is everywhere.
Greek mythology: Massive book
Greek mythology if Zeus kept it in his pants: Tiny book
Apollo wasn't much better.
if you replace book with lorekeepers/storytellers, it all falls into place. Boring story? Add some sexy times in there
@@woeshaling6421 Reason i love Greek mythology was like an amazing soap opera. Everyone cheating on everybody, gods pretty much on a wrathful rampage. Even pretty obscure stories are memorable.
The story of Persephone and how she became queen of the underworld has to do with Greek customs at the time. Persephone accepting even such a slight thing as pomegranate seed still meant that she had accepted Hades hospitality and was therefore bound to him. Hence, beware of Greeks bearing gifts! The implication is that they will demand something in return.
And yet Hades was least bad from three major gods.
"I fear the Greeks even when bearing gifts. " Trojan priest Laocoön referring to the Trojan Horse used by the Greeks during the Trojan War
The quote is referring to the Trojan horse
We gotta censor ancient art pieces for the algorithm now? Smh
Yes, I noticed they have minimized the nipplage. That supposedly makes it more "family-friendly". However, I just can't imagine mom, dad, and the kids gathering around the computer screen to watch this stuff together.
Yes because all the big companies don't want their advents appearing next to videos with naked breasts (because of the bad publicity), and the automatic TH-cam checkers can't tell the difference.
Stephen Fry did an amazing job at retelling these storys in his brilliant book Mythos
The story of Echo is farmore interestng than the scientific reason for noises echoing lol
Zeus couldn't control himself ~ 90% of Greek Mythology in a nutshell
This video reminds me of our Olympic story video! Thanks for the great work
“Zeus paying child support.”
* looks at the Percy Jackson books*
Someone helps with that later. Don’t worry.
My favorite summary of Zeus’s life was a scholar how bluntly stated, “Yeah, essentially Zeus was a serial rapist, and after leaving off women even went for a goat.” I laughed out loud and nearly drove off the road. Priceless.
As a recreational belief, I like to think that deities in mythology have stories where they do weird shit like eat their children without killing them or gestating their children in a hole in their leg, because they live in a different plane of existence from us, and everything which goes on there doesn't necessarily translate to things that make sense, here. The reality is probably more like some priest had a dream, and just told people about it like it was a prophecy.
Just like two popular modern religions.
If you remove religious connotations and think of it like marketing, it makes complete sense. If your advertisement/story is boring, you add some wild things in there to keep your listeners attention. And sex always sells. The majority of ads are dry and forgettable, but you will always remember the nuttiest ones
I thought Simon wasn't wearing pants
Me too
Afaik most stories depict Persephone as pretty chill with being the queen of the underworld.
Hades "kidnapping" her could be a translation thing, since he had Zeus' permission, just not Demeter's.
Might not be up to modern standards, but Hades and Persephone are as funcitonal a couple as you're going to get in Greek mythology.
Interesting take on Echo's myth, but you missed Narcissus becoming reflections in the water.
Good spot on Erisychton -- heard similar tales like about Midas, but not his.
Watching this while on vacation in italy! Quite the coincidence
yes, a mythology is just a religion with no more believers
There are still plenty of believers. Just less accepted in today’s modern world. 😊
The societies or city/state that birthed them failed or was conquered
Hell, I knew a loon in the Army who insisted he was a Druid and was pissed that the Army wouldn't indicate it on his dog tags.

The version of Hades and Persephone I am familiar with says Persephone ate 9 pomegranate seeds, resulting in ine change of seasons because she was secluded in the underworld for nine months of the year.
Don't forget the story of Zeus's cupbearer! A beautiful guy was going around minding his own business when the king of the gods swooped down and took the man for his own.
And the daughter Athena who was born out of Zeus's migraine.
Greek mythology:
60% Zeus can't keep it in his pants
20% Hera getting revenge on Zeus qnd his lovers
10% the Fates messing with someone
10% everything else
Ovid interpretation are cool romanticized yet brings more human aspects that they can be told to teach kids lesson
Basically every Greek legend boils down to what happens when Zeus can't keep it in his pants 😂
Geez!
I thought "Game of Thrones" was jaw-dropping.
It's worth remembering that Greek Mythology goes out of it's way to absolve Hades of all sin for his involvement in Persephone's situation - instead pinning all the blame on Zeus, who ordered him to proceed in this fashion. Plus, the reason we do not know the why behind the seeds is that none of the surviving copies of the myth include that section. There is a section between Hades offering the seeds and the Narrator explaining that means Persephone is bound to the underworld, but with all the copies damaged so badly it remains illegible.
To be fair
If I was the pinnacle of the Greek pantheon and could shapshift into the most handsome guy in the land and no one could ever challenge me....
I'd be going on weekly smash fests too
How many stories in Greek myth can be reduced to "Zeus couldn't keep it in his pants"?
Pro-tip: To get out of Sunday School, insist on comparisons of Hercules and Jesus (both son of a god by a human woman).
It's like Superman Vs Batman, the argument never ends, they'll never let you go back!
You could throw Heracles, Dionysus, or Horus in there and you can get the same results. They were all sons of gods.
Can u do a video on Slavic mythology?
It’s not one that gets mentioned a lot
It isn't discussed much because there isn't much to discuss. The loose collection of deities generally referred to as Slavic paganism emerged and disappeared withing just a few centuries. The man who unified Slavic paganism into a semblance of a religion was the same man who eventually Christianized the nation.
Any video covering the topic would essentially be "Slavic mythology. Yeah, it was a thing." The belief system had no impact on the greater world outside of a small region, and is relatively irrelevant in the grander scope. It would be a difficult topic to dedicate an entire video to.
Will take a look

Well said
@@blinddave88 if anyone can wring a video's worth of content out of the topic, it would be you. Or possibly an entry in a collection of obscure and overlooked religions? It's definitely an interesting topic. Just not one with a lot of meat on the bone.
Arachne and Hecate are my favorite Greek goddesses. Also, I bet the gods would smite Simon if they cared what he thought.
😂 but not you for assuming to know what a God would think...😮
The whole “she ate a seed” is explained in the mythology, although it is often glossed over. I forget which author it was, or in what book - I encountered it in during some of my research. Essentially she ate a seed rather than the fruit. Previously having been warned, likely by Demeter or Hekate, not to eat anything during her captivity
Lots of greek myths to shock factboy. I recommend the Tragedy of Medea.
Simon keeps saying Dionysus.
I keep hearing Dialysis.
Although I suppose if you party like Dionysus you'll eventually be in need of Dialysis.
I hate to be the "um, acktually" guy, but Hades is totally blameless in his marriage to Persephone. Zeus arranged the marriage - but since marriages in ancient Greece did not need to be consensual, so "marriage" and "abduction" were pretty much the same thing.
Pantheistic religions are way more fun (Greece/Rome, Egypt, Aztec, Norse) because most of the time the gods are a bunch of jerks. In other words, they reflect us.
@sideprojects I do believe there is a channel on TH-cam that has been putting out shorts on this. Showing "historical evidence" that the things in the Bible did happen. Like Noah's ark.
Pre-Exodus there isn't much, but all the Abrahamic religions have significant archaeology post-Exodus. There are books hundreds of pages long detailing this. It always amuses me watching (almost always) atheists claim there's no evidence for things in the Talmud/Bible/Koran unaware of the extent of archaeological and historical findings.
Except we have plenty of proof that the Noah's ark story was plagiarised several times form other cultures (because at least 3 other versions have been found and deciphered and dated to be far older and far more similar to each other than the Abrahamic version) and also distorted from the original. The older versions of the story do not tell of a global flood, just a major flood, do not tell about an impossibly large oblong ark but a totally build-able with tools and materials available at the time yer still very large round coracle , and do not tell about housing every species on the planet just the household animals of the protagonist. The older versions are plausible and feasible and good mythological stories, the Abrahamic version is complete hyperbolic nonsense with plot holes at every step.
Hey, Zeus ! Quite a story ! Whatra tangled web we weave.
There are Roman documents confirming the existence of Jesus of Nazareth. The question of "was he the messiah ", well, thats a matter of faith. Brian of Nazareth was not the messiah, he was a very naughty boy.😊
I say he is the messiah. I should know, I’ve followed a few! 🤔
the fact that I knew all this from a Hen-tie game is crazy... my favorite story was the Demeter and Persephone story~
in the game the main character was tasked by Demeter to look for Kore in the Underworld, not knowing Kore's new name is Persephone who's now the Queen of the Underworld.
7:06 Erysichthon looks just like Gordon Lightfoot.
Here’s another interesting birth story: the birth of Pallas Athena involved Zeus taking an axe to the head… as treatment to a nasty headache. And more notable still, given Zeus’ penchant for carnal pleasures: Athena’s conception did not involve a mother.

“Classic Zeus move” 😂
My 'favorite' Zeus story, is the one where he turns a dude into a chick just so he could rap... er, bless her with his child.
Then again, I'm pretty sure that EVERY tale of the Greek Gods is a Cautionary tale...
You missed Artemis.
Hail Eris!
Check out Zeus's fingers in the thumbnail. It's genuinely embarrassing that a channel this big would use AI slop.
Interesting how artificial intelligence still struggles creating hands.
Simon actually made a video on mythology, we won guys we made the one guy who hates myths talk about it 😂
Why hate on something you dont understand. I dont hate on people for not having any faith.
Because Secular Humanism (most self described atheists) is a highly evangelical religion despite no specific directive to preach.
Largely because those of us without much religiosity get tired of being beat over the head by religious people "just trying to spread the good word"
A little taste of their own medicine and some gentle mockery makes it easier to handle.
Personally, I don't care about a person's religion, as long as they keep it to themselves. But whenever I do go to church, usually because my mother-in-law asks us to go, a good chunk of the time is spent telling people not to be afraid to talk about their faith and to be proud to proclaim it. Which just turns even more people off.
@@QBCPerdition Yet most self-described atheists deny that they have a religion themselves.

Somehow I wasn't told the weird origin of Dionysus before.
I laughed at blurring every old painting. That's literally what our culture has become. While mocking people of the past for being idiots. It's like looking in the mirror and realising you're the one wearing the clown mask all along.
Am I the only one that thought Simon had no pants on? 😂😂
Define "unnecessary wars".
Also- the religious component in the Ukraine or Myanmar is pretty thin gruel where present at all. More like state-interest, ethnicity, ideology. China-Taiwan, too, if we get around to that. Even where the parties are of different religion, there are conflicts where nobody thinks it's about that- Armenia/Azerbaijan, whenever India/Pakistan flairs up, and so on. In sub-Saharan Africa most of them seem a combination of ethnicity and normalcy- some things happen like the turning of the earth.
They flying spaghetti monster, approves this video.
12:35 the reason is one that's mentioned in many other mythologies: partaking into the food of the Underworld/Realm of the Dead means being trapped there. I believe this piece of myth was intended to explain why, very rarely, someone regarded as dead came back to life (usually from catalepsy or after being administered some form of first aid).
BTW that story is often told with "four months" and "winter", but it originally was "a third of the year" (i.e. four months) and "summer" (because winters in Greece are not that harsh, while summer is and it usually dries the grass and other plants).
I prefer Dicworld by Terry Prachett (r.i.p.).

Even though one can seriously learn about Greek Mythology in school ... or other TH-cam documentaries ... to hear Simon tell the same stories, the once reasonable but god like fanciful stories of the characters involved, seem much more ridiculous, comedic and obtuse ... to which I say, more please.

One religion's "insane" story is another's "reasonable explanation with theological reverence."
Con men don't care how silly the tale is, any more than the bard does. What they care about is getting donations for putting on the show. At least the bards plays their own songs, so they are worth tipping.
Alot more insane? I dunno.

I thought you were wearing shorts.
There’s really no difference between Greek fables and Christian fables or Muslim fables. They are all just entertaining works of fiction.
Lol, so much for "fact boi." Most of history has less evidence than the Abrahamic religions, to say nothing of the others. Religions don't just come from nowhere, even Greek mythology can be traced back to less detailed earlier religions.
I don't get what your gripe is. I don't care, myself, but if you're going to submit criticism, try wording it in a more comprehensible manner
@@bradprater4789 I expect an unusually well researched documentary channel to demonstrate a similar level of research to all subjects. This feels more like Googling "Crazy Greek stories" without knowing anything else about the topic. That may work for Brain Blaze, but this isn't it.

The Greek gods. Great excuses for outrageous behavior...
Sad bit is, ancient religions actually aren't much more insane than modern religions when you really read the stories, just most modern versions of the Bible, etc are re-written and re-interpreted from their initial versions....

The characters in Greek and Roman mythologies originated within the Genesis chapter 6 account. They were REAL, although the stories about them were obviously wildly embellished. They perished in flood of Noah's day.

Only difference between religion & mythology is that one won enough wars to keep it relevant.
World Wars weren't, religious. Vietnam, Russia in Afghanistan weren't religious. The Khmer Rouge, Mao, Stalin, Kim, Putin, Trump, and Xi weren't religious. You don't WANT to appear bigoted do you?
Religious in the fact they were destroying religion
I’m sorry dude science, philosophy, archeology, mathematics, history, biology give tons of evidence for a creator God and Christianity is the most evidentially robust faith on all the planet. It’s also way more evidentially robust than atheism. You’ve even shown that evidence in past episodes for the book of genesis.
Do we have to pretend that other holy books that people blindly believe these days are any better? Often, the problem isn't the books but the men spinning the stories to their advantage.
But really, it's easy to take snippets of old religions and laugh at them. But in Greek mythology gods were humane, they made mistakes and they had bad feelings and habits. In old testament god was very proud, people needed to worship him, only him, and the way that he demanded. He got mad, killed nations because of petty reasons. But now, the image is of chill old dude, who forgives, as long as you kiss his ass a bit.
Differences aren't huge, but ancient Greek sure did at least make better characters and drama.
