  • Hello! Welcome or welcome back to my channel!! I'm so happy you're here and I hope you enjoy this and all my videos. Please leave a like, comment and share! I'd be honored if you'd subscribe today if you're enjoying my content.
I am exploring fluid art fabric designs in this video series. The number of segments will depend on how much interest there is. If this is something you're interested in, please let me know in the comments! This all started when I hit a wall in my bloom painting due to the weather change in my desert studio. I've since solved that issue and continue to bloom again but I am intrigued with the concept of creating my own fabric for various projects. We are all looking for that artistic medium that sets us apart from other channels so I am always willing to explore new concepts and ideas. If they work well, that's wonderful. If not, I tried it lol. I have done fabric painting before and had mixed results. I was curious as to whether I could make something useful out of all my old used large format canvases. After some experimenting, I realized that my pouring medium didn't lend itself to what I tried to do with the canvas. If I can't use the "art" I can at least reuse the frames! I am not a fan of all the work and expense of reusing stretched canvas to paint on. With canvas being so affordable if you buy at the right time, there is no need to reuse old ones. That being said, I still have a lot of high quality canvases with failed fluid art on them. Any other ideas? Let me know what you've done that's worked!
The products I used in this video along with the recipes are as follows:
I primed this canvas with Folkart clear fabric primer because it was the only one I could find. I don't like it all that much and am fully open to recommendations.
I mixed regular tube paints(you can use any acrylic paint you want) with equal amounts of Tulip fabric medium, available at all craft stores and online. Distilled water was used to thin the mixture further. I got it because it was easy to grab at Hobby Lobby. Unless you are going for stiff fabric, this is not a great product. In the instance of making structured fabric pieces, it's actually ideal but you can use the Folkart primer for stiffness and a better quality fabric medium over that. Tulip brand does crack even with proper use, preparation and heat setting so it won't hold up in the long run.
I purchased the medium weight canvas by the yard at Hobby Lobby along with the 24x36 inch flexible acrylic sheet. You will need some of the following tools: A utility knife, metal ruler and a cutting surface(I have a self-healing mat). You are going to measure your acrylic to fit inside the routed, raised edge of your frame but to sit fully on top of the flat area of wood below it. Carefully score your lines then do additional passes until you have cut through the acrylic. You will need the usual variety of fluid art tools entirely dependent upon what technique you plan to use.
As stated in the video, do not let your fabric dry and cure on the frame! Remove the tacks, carefully lift of your fabric when dry to the touch and lay it out on a piece of plastic to finish drying. Once it's dry, either iron or do several fairly close passes with a heat gun to set the paint and bond it to the canvas. You may also choose to just let it "cure" on it's own for a couple days. Follow manufacturers recommendations.
If I have missed anything, let me know in the comments and I will add it here in the description for others as well as answering your comment.

Very informative video. The tote bag is awesome! There are so many possibilities with you being able to make this type of thing

Thanks! I know a lot of people don't sew but I thought I'd give people an option. Still trying to find a way to use those old painted canvases though!
