NHL Pride Night: Controversy continues as more players refuse to wear pro-LGBTQ+ jerseys

- With some NHL teams and players refusing to wear pride-themed jerseys during warm-up, Teresa Fowler, a professor at Concordia University of Edmonton, weighed in on the message it’s sending about the NHL and the impact it’s having on the sport.
“Despite what change we’re seeing overall, we’re continuing to see the fact that the message for the LGBTQ+ community is that they’re not welcome. And it’s surprising and disappointing that players who previously did wear a jersey are now deciding that they are not wearing a jersey. And that’s due to the precedent set by other players refusing to wear a jersey,” Fowler said.

Straight NHL players talk about their family and post pictures with them on social media all the time, so gay players (which there probably are some in the closet) should be able to do the same without being targeted and being told that the identity they were born with is political and should be kept to themselves.

Having a pride night is one thing, but to shame a player for not wanting to wear a pride jersey because of their religious beliefs goes against the very thing us gay people fought so hard for…to be accepted for who we are. For equality. There is a seat at the table for all who see others for the content of their character rather than the color of their skin, their sexual preferences, religious beliefs, political affiliation, etc.

Teams only wear them in warmup. It’s kinda a token gesture to begin with. Past that most people wouldn’t have even known this happened in Florida if it wasn’t for all the media coverage. The media blew this up and made it more of an issue than it had to be. They don’t even show warmups on tv. It’s also not “homophobic” to not wear a rainbow. How about be accepting of everyone’s beliefs snd comfort levels.

NHL players didn’t sign up to the NHL to virtue signal about lgbtqia etc. They signed up to play hockey. That doesn’t come with a “burden of explanation.” There’s no such thing as a “burden” of “justifying” why you have no interest in co-signing an injected agenda that has ZERO to do with your career. Not wanting that doesn’t come with a “burden of proof.” There’s no such thing as a “burden” of “disproving” the “legitimacy” of a non sequitur.

Teresa Fowler shows that a PhD doesn't equate to intelligible thought. The very first statement she made she said that people refusing pride jerseys are showing that LGBT people aren't welcome. That's rather ironic, because it's the people that refused to wear the pride logo that are being told it's them and their conduct that isn't welcome. You can't force compliance or thought or opinion upon other people. People are free to make up their own minds and hold their own opinions even if you don't like it. The very terms of equality, inclusion, everybody, become falsehoods or lies unless mean what they say.
You can't demand acceptance unless you're prepared to also accept others different from yourself. I guarantee Ms Fowler would never accept an invitation to attend church for a few months to be "inclusive" of religious folk. Yet she has the gaul call for fines and penalties for those not doing what she wants. That is hypocrisy of the highest order.

Can you imagine if there were ZERO Christmas related activities? These hypocrites would be up in arms. I'm actually not too concerned with these jerseys - they will still be on sale, they will amp up Pride events/posters/merch during June, they will likely bring in drag queens (I know some are planning it), etc. We know wearing the jersey is great but it doesn't mean as much as all these other activities. Change the logo on team websites, social media, etc. Have a Pride night every night at June games. Prizes for those who wear their pride jerseys. There are many things they can and will do.
Yrs ago I wore a pride shirt my cousin gave me, I'm not part of community but support most of it. Everyone commented asked about my orientation, it was so evasive I would never dawn pride clothing again. To each their own but don't force your wants on me

That Commissioner I seen a interview he’s great NHL should keep him forever. He was caring and understanding of both sides of the situation. It was on Jeremy Shapp espn. That Commissioner handled himself very well and hockey fans should be proud to have him in charge.
