I've had a 1500 gallon koi pond for 20 years now. I'll do a 20% water change 2-3 times a month during the warmer months but I've always left it over winter for 2 months. I've never had any trouble with my water quality apart from recently with fluctuations in the nitrite due to the new filter I've added. I've always had the philosophy that little is best when it comes to my pond.
Thanks glad you like the videos. I put a bead filter after my nexus and the dirt it used to collect was unbelievable and it made my water so much clearer Adam
I was in the subscription scrolling down to see this video with my username on it xD ( I felt special) Yeah this video is very informative and now I know tips on improving my outdoor pond. My pond 2 years ago when I was a beginner was HELL for the fish with ammonia levels at the highest and all the fish had burns and some had massivr holes in them like 4 cm wide and 2 cm deep and that was for goldfish. I mean mainly because I know someone who only changed once a month because of how big their pond was for the amount of kois but mine is a small 3,750 liter with a few koi and goldfish. Yeah in spring I didn't water change for 3 weeks because the water had literally no ammonia and all that for my plants so they released hormones and for those 3 weeks I had constant breeding and I have 15 baby goldfish that im still looking after in a tank. BTW well made video and it answered all my question and prefer to trust a well experienced fish keeper than the internet. Questions: What is wrong with the koi in quarantine or are they the new fish? Do you lower the temperature of the pond in winter to simulate their natural beings? So I have baby goldfish from the goldfish breeding at spring time... Should I release them in my super cold pond in the winter or wait until spring when the fish breed again?
as someone new to koi keeping I have figured out the koi can take care of themselves and if truth be told we ( koi keepers) are really water keepers spending all our time looking after the water
You've showed water going in all the time but surely it must also go out via some overflow or the tank would over spill? Can you Show us how this works?
your videos are amazing new pond owner here and everything your saying is very helpful:) any recommendations for a good all in 1 filtration system i dont have proper pumps/ filters currently but need to know whats best i want to have kind of an overkill filtration system so i can have more fish and eventually when its time make my pond larger i have about 20 koi no larger then 5 inches and 20 goldfish the same size in roughly a 1200 gallon pond any tips or advice on any and everything would be greatly appreciated i live in the United states in utah where 6out of 6 months its below 60degrees F
I am on a water meter, my water bill for the pond is about £45per month (I dont pay for drainage). I can tell you that if a was not on a water meter my neighbors would be complaining about low water pressure because i would be using that much.
+Adam Julyan (aljonline) thats not too bad actually . My neighbours have complained about the sound of water ! Ive had to switch off fountains and waterfall , but added a large air pump for oxygen ... Only a small pond but some people are tetchy i guess . Great set up btw
morning Adam just a quick question I don't real know what I am talking about but here goes I have a large profi drum I am going to have a trickle of water in my pond all the time. but what do I need to auto top up my ponds water be couse I am under the impression that as the profi drum Self cleans it takes water from the pond to clean I don't want to be topping up my pond manually all the time. so will the fresh water trickle keep the pond topped up or do I need to add something to do this. thank you and sorry to bother you best wishes kev from Wales
Hi Kevin, this is actually a much better question than it might seem at first. The reason i say that is yes the trickle should manage the usage of the drum but if it does not you will definitely know about it as the drum will try to drain your pond. I have managed with a lot of trial and error to get the perfect trickle you will go through the same process as you get used to how the drum works and you will drain the pond a few times as i have with every drum i have owned there is no set answer every pond is different. I keep a small trickle coming out of the overflow all of the time and i know that if this trickle stops then the trickle into the pond is not fast enough but it does change with time in the middle of summer i will struggle to have it trickling out at the end of the day but if i adjust the inflow of water the next morning it will be overflowing too fast. So no you dont need an auto top-up but it will take time to perfect the trickle. Adam
I have just changed the filters in mine as they where letting through a bit of chlorine. they have had 124,000gallons through them next time i change them will be 100,000gal so i avoid the bit of chlorine. 300gal is not very much i use that in a day.
A mixture of ways 1. the filter i use require a trickle to maintain the pond level as it uses water. 2. our toilets in the house use pond water to flush. 3. if there is any extra then it overflows usually early in the morning it overflows a bit but we use most of it. Adam
Hi Adam I have recently 3 stage HMA 10 inch filter VYAir one, your trickle that you do in to your filter is there a reason its into filter and not straight into pond, or could I trickle straight into pond....or don't it really matter...cheers Dave
Hi, I would say preferable to go into the filter as it then mixes through the filtration system and the fish won't detect a difference in temperature or water quality. however it does trickle straight into my quarantine tank so really i would say whatever having the trickle at all is the most important thing. Adam
Adam Julyan thanks mate. great videos also, very informative. through watching your vids has made up my mind on the trickle set-up. your set up is something special for sure. very envious indeed....
+MyAquaticDiary Yes it has happened once in the two years i had this pond. I had a little 2ft Sturgeon that liked to go around the edge and when it went past the window the koi came up underneath it for food and pushed it over the edge. It did die which was very sad, it was my favourite Sturgeon because it is really difficult to get Sturgeon to hand feed but that one did. I think they don’t jump out because of the windows they can see what is there and don’t need to jump. I really need to keep a net on my quarantine tank because they will jump out because they can’t see anything. Don’t know how true that it but it appears that way.

thats some crazy setup
How much did your whole. Set up like tank and filtration not including the fish cost
Also is your how much has it raise water and power bill
15-20k?
You've showed water going in all the time but surely it must also go out via some overflow or the tank would over spill? Can you
Show us how this works?
Justin Stuart there’s usually an overflow in either the skimmer or filter.
Hi Adam,
Please can you tell me where you got that 1300 pond from??

I was thinking of his water bill !!! That trickle would run up your bill ... Cant be on the meter

Where'd you get your tank?
how deep is that?
Hi, Its 7ft deep
Adam
How often do you change the charcoal on your filters? I use a cartridge filter on the supply too, but it's only good for 300 gallons.
I have just changed the filters in mine as they where letting through a bit of chlorine. they have had 124,000gallons through them next time i change them will be 100,000gal so i avoid the bit of chlorine. 300gal is not very much i use that in a day.
what air pumps do you use please
2 x evolution aqua 75lpm
Unreal set up
Hi Adam...i get how the new water is trickling in but how is the old water leaving the pond? thanks Ross
