Watched 'the deepest breath' movie last night. I have a whole new appreciation for exactly how amazing these athletes, and their safety teams, really are.
Once i was in Korfu i tryed to dive for a shell about 4m deep and i failed multiple times since my head was about to explode after 3m. So i have only 1 question. HOOOOW????
The weight of the water that surrounds you builds up pressure as you go deeper. Therefore your entire body experiences that pressure but it is mostly felt by your ears and sinusal cavity’s. To equalize pressure you simply have to pinch your nose and push air through it. Your ears will pop as your tympanic membrane comes back to its original place. You can experience the same phenomenon, on a smaller scale, in a descending plane. Although you should never do this when coming back to the surface as pressure will equalize naturally when ascending, and adding pressure at this moment can be harmful.
Very simple, learn how to equalize pressure. Same like your ears hurt on a plane. I can easily snorkel to 30m, although pressure of the normal diving mask on the eyes is annoying
James Néstor in his book Deep makes a good case of a dissenting voice that this sport is on par with other dangerous sports such as wingsuit and base jumping. For every successful record dive, there are multiple yearly deaths and lifelong injuries.
I remember being 21 and dived at 12 feet pool, touched the floor and went up. It felt like fighting for a life getting on surface and running of air. I did my best swimming and still was panicking and almost drowned. When i got out my ears were in bad pain from pressure for one week. I don’t know how it even possible to do dive and up even for 10 meters. I truly don’t know…
well you obviously had not done training and equalization. it's dangerous even at 4-5 meters to untrained individuals, you could have popped your eardrums or blacked out there
Congrats alexy...since the deepest breathe aired amazing doc im a fan of freediving but unfortunatly horrified of the dark so i could never do it but i love to free dive alittle when im in corfu greece alot of the year love the water but scared of the dark down there😂
Very impressive. Congratulations to him! Even SAY the words "deep water" to me and I get terrified, but I love watching others do what I'm too chicken to do myself. 😄
For CWT we're probably starting to reach lung flexibility limits and breath hold limits now I expect; no limits dive record is 214M but they don't need to move.
I couldn't imagine how much pressure is put on his lungs when he's down that deep. Even some experienced scuba divers are weary of going that deep in full gear.
Watched Deepest Breath ass well. Amazing sport. I was wondering how these dives are filmed. By under water drone? Interesting to see how the camera follows the diver so direct.
Nope, that would cause barotrauma, as you would have to blow air out with your nose to equalize the pressure in the cavity. If you ever dive in any form you will know the pain.
For us Americans who might not realize the craziness of what he just did, that’s 436ft 4.22in… basically he dove a football field and then some downwards. You’re welcome Americans.
@@markchavez738 I'm American. I trust your satire is in lock-step with my sattire. That being said. I fucking love America. I've lived all over the world. America is where it's at and everybody knows it.
How cold is the water down there at 133m? Does anyone know? I keep wondering if on top of everything else their faces, hands, legs might be freezing at the heaviest part.
Because he’s not spending time at depth and is not breathing air like scuba divers so there is no risk for decompression sickness. Its not a risk when you are doing it on a single breath hold.
If he blows bubbles out underwater, he's not only getting rid of the co2 in his lungs but also any remaining O2. Also, if he breathed out underwater, he would become more negatively buoyant, and it would make it harder to get back to the surface. His ability to tolerate high CO2 is why he is as good as he is. I did a freedive course at the age of 45 having smoked for 30yrs. Went from a 1 min breath hold to 4 mins.
@@johndalton9170 Thanks, that makes sense. Must be hard to learn to control the breathing reflex that you get from high CO2 levels in the blood. My hat off to all freedivers!
@mke7605 You build up the tolerance with training. But as they say in the commentary, it's about relaxation and mental focus. Notice he doesn't try to swim down to make the dive faster. Relaxation in free fall means the co2 buildup is slower.

I watched it last night, incredible but you have to have peace with possible death to do this.
I did too and I almost begin to cry

Who’s here after watching The Deepest Breath? Such an impressive dive

Hadn’t heard of it! I’ll try and find it and watch this weekend!

Sitting still at my computer all relaxed I can barely hold my breath for the descent. Amazing dive!

Join a freediving course ,you ll be amazed by what your own body can do. You'll rediscover yourself!

Equalize 🤭🤭
Yeah now cut that in half lmao. Way different when you are underwater and have to swim while holding your breath as well.
This is amazing and absolutely terrifying

this shit right here. breaking the limits of humanity. real shit
This is an unbelievable feat
I had trouble breathing just looking at this , Congrats

It's not the oxygen that is concerning, its the pressure at this depth that would rupture anyone eardrums while your lungs would explode

wonder what the depth record is without a suit and ZERO fins 🤔
No fin record is 102M, he was wearing a suit though th-cam.com/video/e_sc7j0XHEk/w-d-xo.html
How does he not get sick from rising back to surface so fast?
you get sick only when you breath from air tank.
Because he’s not spending time at depth and is not breathing air like scuba divers so there is no risk for decompression sickness. Its not a risk when you are doing it on a single breath hold.
Do you not get the bends from that?
Not such an issue with freediving as you just have the single lung volume of nitrogen. Narcosis is still a thing though
