"Every day it gets a little easier. But you gotta do it every day; that's the hard part. But it does get easier." This one quote encapsulates what this entire series is really about.
I always saw Diane staying at Bojack's for that long as a sign that she was suffering from depression and couldn't bear to face her husband again. I don't think it was pride as much as it was shame that she had left her life in LA to do "real work" only to then discover she wasn't strong enough. To have your entire life be showed to you and realise you're not strong enough to accomplish your own dreams must be incredibly difficult, so I completely empathise with what she was going through and think it highlights just how much Mr Peanutbutter loves her that he was willing to understand and forgive her.
Thank you. Very much THIS. I don't get the Diane hate. It was pretty clear she was in a situationally-induced depression (with hints of PTSD that are never fully explored). This is the episode that won me over to Mr. Peanutbutter. (Nonetheless I still get irked thinking about how he told Diane to fuck off to Cordovia when he didn't want to deal with death threats against her.)
Thank you! I hate seeing people shit all over Diane because they don't understand depression. This happens too often in real life, too. I'm glad this show exists to shine light on this mental illness, that is more common than most people realize.
Mr. Peanutbutter is an intriguing character. Everyone goes on about how pure and happy go lucky he is, yet he's on his 3rd marriage and it's not going great. I think his biggest issues are slowly shown throughout the series; he truly wants to do good things for people and he's very loving, but his follow-through needs work and he just doesn't listen very well. His happiness seems surface-level and precarious at times and he's just as insecure as Bojack. But he's willing to learn from his mistakes every time. It's interesting.
I like that, no matter how dark and depressing the show gets, there are moments of hope and potential change which the characters try to achieve for themselves.
That's why I've never understood people saying that the show is nihilistic. It's the OPPOSITE of nihilism. Bojack is always trying to grow and improve, even when he fucks up. Even if other characters seem not to learn, he does.
Wrong. Rick and Morty isn't nihilistic either. Rick, despite CLAIMING to not care about anything, VERY CLEARLY DOES. That's what makes him BETTER. Jesus Christ, THEY DID AN ENTIRE EPISODE ABOUT THAT. Calling Rick and Morty nihilistic is even more simple-minded than calling Bojack nihilistic.
RabidDogma Well no shit, he does care. That isn't my point. Rick is a doomed character, there is no redemption or "getting better" for him. The fact that he created the Council of Ricks further cements his grossly egotistical and existentially insecure nature that he boxed himself into. Despite caring about Morty, he still uses him as a meat shield, and it doesn't phase him much because he knows there is an infinite number of universes where he's alive, so his moral compass is pretty much non-existent. He's become an entity that has remnants of what it was like to be human. The show would like you to believe he's figured it all out and is better than everyone, but that isn't the case at all. And let's not even start with "hey, here's Rick's backstory, nope just kidding, we lied!" You know, the thing that helps the audience understand why the character is how he is. With Bojack, there is a constant tipping scale of hope and darkness, not just with the protagonist, but with most of the characters. Because that's how real life is. Season 4 ending up to be the most hopeful, earned by Bojack working hard for his happiness. Rick and Morty is barely a scale, it is mostly nihilism with the writers tossing in funny and catchy lines to artificially contrust a sense of lighthearted moral balance. It just doesn't flow naturally like Bojack, and knowing how depressed of a guy Dan Harmon is, it isn't a surprise. No character other than perhaps Beth goes through an active change to better themselves, they just kind of stay the same.
You're missing the point entirely again. He's not "an entity" blah blah, he IS a human being. He's an exceptional one, maybe THE most exceptional one, but he's STILL HUMAN. And the show DOES NOT make you think he's figured it out, it's EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE. The episode I JUST MENTIONED BEFORE tells you that. Do you even watch the show?? The POINT of that episode was that HE DOES NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND HIMSELF AND WHAT MAKES HIM WHO HE IS. The fact that you think Rick and Morty is "mostly nihilism" tells me that 1) you don't know what nihilism actually is (like most people), and 2) you're far more in love with the concept of your own theories than actually knowing what you're talking about. Rick has CLEARLY gone through changes. Morty has ABSOLUTELY gone through changes. So has Jerry. Beth is one of the least changed until the very end of last year. Summer's changed A LOT. The fact that you've somehow missed all of that says a lot about you and your failed analysis abilities. In fact, this exchange with you has been so disappointing that I removed my thumbs up from your earlier comment and deleted my own. The last thing I would want to do is to be associated with something you've said.
The Joker Oh that was it my mistake You know when you swear you remember something and it turns out to not be true but not completely false because he remembered it wrong
The thing is Diane is depressed and the hardest thing for people with depression is understanding and coping with the fact that you have it. Just like Bojack neither of them know what to do with their depression or who to talk to
4 reasons : - Everyone loves the main character - Everyone loves happy, extroverts like PB - It's not easy to get in an introvert shoes. It's easier to feel happy with PB than understand the complex feelings behind Diane's behavior (which is completely unfair) - I wonder if on some level, the fact that she's a woman has an influence on the judgement since women are expected to be more resistant to hardships.
I don’t think anyone is giving a pass to BoJack’s behavior (or at least they shouldn’t be) it’s just that charisma can blind you a little in the moment but in retrospect you know who’s behavior is worse.
People be saying how shitty Bojack is almost every episode. Thing is, we're wired to accept him as a scumbag at this point, but people like Diane who we view as good people from the outside suddenly realizing that they can also do bad things just puts things into perspective and people start pointing it out.
@@sorkaem That was really a load of nonsense, your hardships don’t justify bad behaviour, ur acting as if ppl should also give a pass to Diane, when the problem is them not giving Bojack a hard time

Jeremy Oh, I hope it's not the final season. I get that shows need to end eventually, and I do want an amazing ending for this amazing show, but on the other hand I don't want it to end. I'll say this though: At one point in the show Bojack truly need to seek out psychiatric help. Like, for his own good! There's an episode in season 3 where he kinda does but not really, but at one point there needs to be a psychiatric recurring character that Bojack gets to visit and talk to.
As someone who has been deep in Diane's shoes, primarily having depression, as well as anxiety, and exhibiting selfish behavior that has at times hurt other people because of that, I've been called out on it. Because it was a shitty thing to do. I definitely agree that certain things seem to fly over their heads, like what it might be like to have depression, and most of all, how PB is as equally culpable in his and Diane's marital problems, but depression or not, shitty behavior is shitty behavior.
I don't think Mr. Peanutbutter was being a dumb "loyal dog" in that scene. He's obviously hurt by her lying, but he's willing to pretend it never happened to help her save face because pulling her out of her spiral of shame and avoidance takes priority over dealing with what happened. That's unconditional love. Diane got into this mess by trying to hide her failures from him because she was convinced that her failures would make her unworthy of his love. He's just trying to prove her wrong, to prove that unconditional love exists.
She was hiding for 3 months, soo? Thats not the worst thing to happen. You can understand her point cause she is confused and scared. She is not a shitty person.
Yes but the fact that she is a woman dealing with her own shit makes people uncomfortable because women are supposed to be obedient to men which is why people base her character's worth purely on Mr. Peanutbutter's reaction and happiness, even though Diane is her own person with her own feelings to deal with.
@@GentM2015 Maybe a little, but it doesn't have to be a pure sex thing, the reason is because, it just seems sooo unnecessary as well as shitty; most people, including me just could never imagine making that choice. _Maybe_ a heteronormative mindset makes them hold it against Diane more, but I doubt that they can't think about it rationally, so I'm sure they would think bad about Mr.PB if the situation was reverse.
