    In retrospect, I should have counted Glacial Chasm. It is a good card but it is terrible at upkeep.

  • @sablesalt

    Not an upkeep effect but I want to shoutout how phasing interacts with stasis, the phasing permanent never comes back ever if stasis is in play on a single turn it would phase in.
    Just to be clear I don't mean if stasis is still in play they don't come back, I mean if stasis is in play when a permanent would try to phase in it will simply fail because the phase it comes in on doesn't exist and sadly it never ends up trying again thus making it gone but not in exile.
    Also for edh players this means if a player casts teferi's protection and somebody plays stasis their whole board is gone and moreover their commander is too since they cannot return it to the command zone because phasing isn't a form of zone change, brutal...

    Ah, Takklemaggot. Yes, it slowly eats creatures, bouncing to the next host when the current one dies, until there are no creatures and it starts eating the player. In college in the 90s, we had a big multiplayer game planned one weekend, like 9-10 people. I and a friend got together and made white/black decks with 4 Takklemaggots each and Prot-Black creatures, Pestilence, all that good stuff. IIRC, at one point we had 5 of the rot grubs moving around the table. Fun times, fun times!

    53:51 Demonic Pact is great when you're able to donate it to an opponent before the lose the game ability goes off

    Fun fact about Minion of Leshrac. The fact that it taps if you don't pay the cost is essentially inconsequential as you can respond to the Upkeep trigger by tapping it to pop a creature or land.

    I loved Doomgape back in the day. I played it in a Naya Ramp deck and would let it eat my mana dorks if it stuck around. It being black meant that it was immune to a lot of removal spells, and it having a butt of 10 meant that damage wasn't generally gonna do it in. Giving it haste and double strike was pretty fun too (Lightning Greaves + Fireshrieker).

    Back in the day I bought two 4th Ed starter packs and a couple Arabian night and ice age boosters. I HAD a big chunk of these cards. No wonder playing mtg felt awful and I stopped playing pretty soon after.

    "Know your factorials" - that was pretty cringe.
    1 + 2 + 3 --- + 8 is called a Gaussian Sum, formula: (n * (n + 1)) / 2
    Factorials multiply and it's faster growing than any exponential. Yes, even x to the power 10 million

    Force of nature, circle of protection green was an old school combo.

      Or Spirit Link once Legends came out. They clarified the rules so that COP and Spirit Link worked with Force but not with Lord of the Pit (you can choose not to pay mana upkeep, but you cannot just choose to not pay other upkeeps. If you had a creature you had to sacrifice to the Pit Lord.)

  • @wolfwing1
    @wolfwing1 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    hehe force of nature, man that was an evil thing in original magic :> Yeah upkeep was expensive but wasn't really anything that could face it one on one back then .
    Had a 2nd turn combo to get him out with upkeep :>
    First turn forest, discard elvish spirit guide, tap forest, use two green mana to play gaea's touch, play second land tap for llanwar elf, then second turn, play another land, sac gaea's touch tap elf and three lands play force of nature :> Did that in a tournament once, straight into swords to plowshear hehe.

      how would he be brought out in turn 2?

    • @wolfwing1
      @wolfwing1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@henlohenlo689 showed above :>
      first turn forest, discard elvish spirit guide gives me a green mana, tap forest for another green mana, play gaea's touch. gaea's touch let's me play another land each turn if it's a forest, and can sacrifice for two green mana. PLay another forest, then play llanawar elf with it. I now have 2 forests an elf and the gaea's touch in play. Next turn play another forest, tap all three forests and the elf sacrifice gaea's touch for total of 6 mana, and then play force of nature, and I have the upkeep of 3 forests and an elf each turn.

    Somebody, it was either boshnroll or thrabenu played Rotting Regisaur in a legacy league. It was a curses deck with a helm/leyline combo I think.

    Stasis is a card that people look at as a prison effect, when that isn't its best use. Just cast it while having a way to sac it during your opponent's turn. If you cast it like an Exhaustion that only costs 2 mana, it's far more reasonable than actually keeping it on the board. Just have an Auratog, Perilous Research, Claws of Gix, or any number of other sac outlets. I used it like this for my UW Enchantments Control (Oblivion Ring, Hatching Plans, Auratog, Perilous Research, Mana Leak, Mana tithe, Stasis, Rising waters, Grand Arbiter Augustin IV, Parallax Tide and Wave, with Yosei as the finisher), and was told by everyone in my playgroup that none of them liked playing against my deck...and was told in no uncertain terms that I could keep using the deck without complaint if I removed Stasis and Rising Waters. So, I replaced Stasis with Exhaustion and Rising Waters with Hokori Dust Drinker. I also tinkered around with Mesa Enchantress, but the card advantage wasn't enough to warrant the 3 upfront cost.

    Force of Nature was a great card in the revised days. I always wanted one in the mid-90s but they were expensive.

    Aboroth allowed me to win big at the Weatherlight prerelease as myself and all my opponents misread it. Aided with some auras that gave it flying as well. 8/8 to 7/7 to 6/6 made it playable, but correctly reading it would not have allowed it.

    In the 1997 M:tG Shandalar video game, I loved wrecking house with a green/white deck that used Force of Nature and Spirit Link. One SL pays for the upkeep, and two or more turns FoN’s upkeep cost into a gain! (Technically, you need to be able to survive the upkeep damage before SL triggers and heals you, i.e. have more than 8 life, but I don’t recall how the game handled it.)

    I’ve cast Force of Nature turn 3 with Instil Energy on it. Because I attacked first, and I could untap it, I killed him before it killed me.

    Bro how did u not wreckognize on Palladia Mors, bro was like one of the 5 OG elder dragons, back in the day you could offer to trade an ED for a Mox, straight up. Like no, no one would take it but you could at least talk about it unironically and not get laughed out of the store.

    Not sure if this combo is legal anywhere, but I can easily imagine opponents instantly conceding if you get Stasis and Wilderness Reclamation in play at the same time (Stasis makes both players skip their untap step, but Wilderness Reclamation untaps all your lands at the *end* of each of your turns so your opponent is on a fixed mana supply while your mana supply is a bit jank rather than gone).
    Lost interest before I could find a reliable untap method for your own creatures so atm each one is a one-off, but if your creatures have vigilant or are giant tramplers that are overall fine with only getting one attack off then the action economy of the match is skewed so heavily in your favor that the opponent needs to have a counterplay ready in a handful of turns or they just lose to attrition.

    Scourge of Numai isn't all that terrible since there are a good number of Ogre creatures, some even in Black, and losing some life every turn can be counteracted with lifelink. It's just a victim of powercreep.

    27:26 Even though it's not an upkeep trigger, the best Bitterblossom effect is Black Market Connections. Sure, you lose up to 6 life. But normally, you're just gonna choose to lose 3 life, which draws you a card AND makes a treasure token. That's insane. And if you want the 3/2 changeling, you still have the option. BMC goes in any tribal deck running black

      12:15 - Stasis. Now that's a classic.. To "break" it.. You needed Kismet and a way to bounce it or make it last.. Time Elemental was not that good.. But bunch of Islands and boomerangs worked quite well. Chronatog was an option.. Now -- I think mana dorks and Virtue of Loyalty could work.

    • @Jawzah
      @Jawzah 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      45:10 - and there's the Lord of the Pit... I don't think it was broken "back then" -- just something that could be playable in right deck - and good against some decks. Serra Angel was close to being broken - and could be played with stasis.
