It was a lil' unfortunate that the book potrayed Ravenpaw as if the author had never heard of the character befofe, though by narrative it could kinda make sence? That wasnt what the book wanted to do probably but hmm Oblivious and insecure Ravenpaw who's being manipulated by his mentor, so he could possibly become a disposable lackey. It would be cool to see a fanfic where someone explores Ravenpaws kithood and Tigerclaws manipulation-later attemts to get rid of the apprentice
I think it makes a bit more sense if Ravenpaw is trying to be more violence based, but still is a bundle of nerves. Like a "oh haha...yup...violence...love it..." Kinda thing.
Was Ravenpaw really scared of being a warrior though? The only thing he's scared of in the original book is Tigerclaw and the social fallout of knowing something he's not supposed to. Beyond that, the writing goes out of its way to depict him as exceptionally capable at his duties.

I was like "This is going really well! They did their research and kept it consistent this time-Oh no, no, never mind" When reading Redtail's debt tbh because wasn't like a BIG part of it that Redtail DIDN'T kill Oakheart?
I did a re-read recently while keeping this in mind. The battle in Redtail's Debt is mostly consistent with statements and implications from Into the Wild, which are contradicted by the statements made in Forest of Secrets. Notably, Ravenpaw's Forest of Secrets version claims that the reason he went back to the battle was that he hadn't seen whether Redtail was okay after the rockfall and that he had to creep past the retreating RiverClan cats to get back, while in his story at the gathering in Into the Wild he claims to have seen Redtail unharmed and actively involved in the battle after Oakheart's death, and in his private retelling to Firepaw in chapter 19, he claims that the reason he went back was that he didn't want to leave while they were still fighting. With enough semantic wrestling you can get the Into the Wild versions to fit the Forest of Secrets version, but it requires Ravenpaw's gathering story to be entirely made up, and for him to have lied about why he went back in the chapter 19 retelling. Instead Redtail's Debt takes everything he said from Into the Wild and nothing from Forest of Secrets. The "not losing at all" quip in this video seems out of place though, as RiverClan retreated in both versions. I can only assume Moonkitti mixed it up with the battle ThunderClan lost a moon earlier? (As another aside, I'm not sure why RiverClan would have retreated in the same direction Ravenpaw took to go towards ThunderClan's camp.)
I look at it like this - Ravenpaw only acted that way because of what Tigerclaw showed/taught him. After seeing the figure he was supposed to trust murder someone who's probably his cousin , traumatized him. Being traumatized changes you. It made him go from being sure of him self and outgoing, to timid and quiet. In a way it makes sense, but they could have been smoother about it.
The only thing worse than it is the abomination that is Spottedleaf's Heart. Honestly, after that and this new pile of garbage, it seems like the Erin's are just publishing bad fanfiction.
I havent read it yet, but I'd like to consider it canon if you just cross out all the stuff that messes with actual canon. Like Oakhearts' death and Ravenpaws'... everything.

Redtail's debt was about to be my favorite novella, but of course the Erins would never allow that. So Thunderstar's Echo sits at the top, where it should be. Now followed by Tawnypelt's clan solely because of that One (1) insult at Tigerstar and the adorable Tawnypelt and Dovewing friendship

I also heard that they changed Oakheart's death in RT's Debt... not sure how they can explain that one since his death was kind of a main plot point...
