Take pictures of the settings and the presser foot with your phone and the steps in between, then print them and put into a notebook. I work better with visual clues, so do this at work on my computer. This way, I don’t miss anything.
Awesome, thank you for sharing! You can probably even attach a tiny sample of fabric that it was used on, so that way in the future you know if it was lightweight or medium weight fabric and etc :)
You should totally rename this "how to make sergers un-scary'. I've sampled a few different things with mine but I'm keen to try some more now, thank you.
He he, that's a good one :) I think they are just so fast and also feature the knife to cut fabric, so sometimes that gives us extra things to worry about, but once you get into it - the fear goes away :) There are so many more things they can do, but I don't have the attachments for them - one of them is an elastic feeding foot :)
I really enjoy your videos. Your presentation makes sewing less intimidating and for this 70 year old who just got back into sewing, it really helps me feel more confident! Thank you. ♥
I love that you are wearing a garment you sewed yourself. So many times I watch garment sewing videos and the presenter is wearing a RTW garment. There is nothing wrong with that - we all wear RTW no matter how much we sew - but it is a nice touch if you are actually wearing something you made. It is a demonstration of your skill and passion for sewing. (LOVE your blouse!)
Don't be scared! :) sergers can be different, but with the manual in hand and some scrap fabric (we all have that, right?) you can dedicate an hour or so just exploring what it can do for you. It is fun, enjoy! :)
Alisa - thank you! Honestly, I am terrified of my serger. You make it so much easier to want to get the machine out and play with it. THANK You! Hugs to you!
Thank you for this! I just treated myself to the same Serger. I have wanted one for ages and this encouraged me to go ahead. I can’t wait to try these all out!
I actually watched this video a while ago, and then came across it again today. Definitely worth watching again... it's a good reminder of the possibilities.
thak you! Ive joined your videos as I do own an overlocker but hardly use it...different brand but I'm sure I can still learn. You explain so well...thank you so mch, very encouraging..and I'm nearly 70 with 50 years sewing!
Zelda, hello there and.... guess what I am going to say? :) Get that serger out of the box, look up a manual for it, get a big pile of fabric scraps and set aside a couple of hours and you will not regret it! You will love it!
I found your video, actually your video found me. What a wonderful find! Thank you for showing the versatility of surgers. I love the step by step instructions. I own a 1034D. Let the projects begin!
Great video. I was a licensed instructor 12 years ago. Sold my top of the line Babylock serger due to downsizing and haven’t touched one since. Getting a Brother 1034D next week and feel totally lost - hopefully it’s like riding a bicycle 😁- but your videos are certainly going to help. Many thanks.
@Thoughtful Creativity - CRAFT, SEW, DIY I gotta be honest, I HAVE the manual... the machine is just... new & scary, lol. I've been using it, getting more comfortable and more proficient... the gathering foot that attaches the ruffle to the hem edge at the same time - wooo! I gotta go read the manual, you inspired me. Thanks for your videos, you've taught me a lot!
I have finally mastered how to thread my surgery and then it broke down. It is 20 years old. so I just bought a fancy juki and now that I'm a lot more confident, I look forward to using some of these new techniques
Thanks for another great video Alisa! My mom's old Bernette makes a lovely rolled hem - I should actually use it on more things! I also love using the serger for gathering (just with the normal pressure foot) because it goes so much quicker than the sewing machine, and I have less thread breakage. The flatlock seam I got right on the first try (beginner's luck) and never again after that 😂 I do love the look of it though so I will just have to keep trying. I know the machine can do it, I just have to find the right combination of settings again.
This was an awesome video. I learned so much today. Moving the stitch width up to 7 when gathering makes perfect sense. I just finished using my serger to gather with and sometimes it fell off the edge a smidge. That stitch width would have made the biggest difference. Thank you for all you do. You’re awesome.
Thanks so much for sharing this video, I've learnt a few things that I didn't know about. Also, TH-cam has stopped putting the videos at the corners, so when we look up we we don't see anything at all. Much love to you and yours.
Thank you so much for an excellent tutorial on how to use my serger to do so much more❤❤❤ you are a wonderful teacher so up beat ❤❤❤ love your enthusiasm 🥰
Lovely intro... Honestly, something I needed. I have an old 3 thread serger and no manual... Been interesting! I still don't think I have all the settings correct, but I can overlook my seams at least.
Hi there. Hope this is useful but if you type in the make and model on line you will probably find a copy of the manual is available to download. I found one for my old sewing machine and Overlocker which I have both printed and kept on computer file.
So many great tips as always!!! I will never understand why people are scared of sergers! I love mine so much! I also deal with severe back, leg, neck…basically all over chronic body pains and I got my serger because it’s faster. And she sure is! If you’re afraid of your serger (again, I don’t understand how you could be) check your local quilt shops. They may have classes to get you acquainted with your serger or even project classes that teach you all sorts of new things you can do with your serger. My serger (Baby Lock Vibrant) came with a second foot but it looks identical to the one that’s always been on my machine. I thought it was in case the other foot broke or got lost. Baby Lock feet are SO expensive. I’ll have to check my manual to see if it’s actually identical or if it’s for gathering or some other type of foot! If it wasn’t for this video I’d never have even thought to check my manual!! So thank you!
I really enjoy your videos. I have recently been able to get a job in the sewing industry. I am learning so much as I was only a basic craft sewer beforehand. I havebeen wanting to get a serger to add at home and thanks to this video I I now know how useful it will be .
Thank you kindly! I tried rolled hem today because of this, and it was so straightforward that I'm kicking myself for being so slow to try it. Certainly a new favourite in the répertoire!
That is awesome! Congratulations! Don't let it sit int he corner, with the manual in hand and a pile of scraps - play around and it see what it can do for you :) it will take a little bit of practice, but what doesn't, right? I am excited for You! :)
You are an absolute GEM! My t-shirt needed shortening and it already had a flat seam on it. I had no idea how to recreate it when your video came out. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!😃
Really useful. Who knew my server was so versatile?! I’ve been struggling with a rolled hem foot on my sewing machine for weeks - unsuccessfully. I’ll definitely be trying that on my serger and some of the other techniques. Thank you so much for your vlog 😀
I love this serger. It's very easy to use and thread. Not as easy as air thread😂 but still easy. It is a good entry machine imho. Very helpful video for more to do with our sergers. This channel is so full of information. I'm pretty sure someone could learn to sew just watching you. ❤
Thank you. I've had my serger for years (Brother 1034D). Took the stitch finger off once. I need to try these techniques, especially the rolled hem as I want to make some scarves.
Awesome video. Thank you. I wish it were possible to be able to machine gather on patterns that have a specific start and finish point for the gather, but the rest of this should help a lot in my sewing endeavors.
I use the rolled hem often as well, my Elna Dex actually has 2 rolled hem settings. I have never used my machine for gathering, not even sure I have the foot for it. I have never used serger for blind hem, I use my normal machine, but I do the flat lock. I definitely will do the pintuck method in future
Thanks for this video. I'm just getting used to using my new serger. I've seen videos on mine and the different stitches it will do, It does the same things as yours does but it doesn't have the different feet. So far I've just got the threading down, adjusting for the different fabrics, I've just done the 4 thread so far. Your video has helped me a lot and given me courage to try the different things it will do. I've been watching the use of cover stitch machines, maybe after I get this serger down I will see about getting one. Here in Norway they are still very expensive, but I have found a used one that was only used 2 times. I think it is a Brother also. My serger is a Singer. After trying and working so hard on getting it threaded good, I really am interested in the Air threader machines. I want to start making my own underwear, and got a pattern to make a swim suit so I've really excited on getting more use of my serger.
Thank you for showing how to use a flatlock for a hem! By the way, I use more of an edge when making a blind hem so that I can cut more off without having to worry about where my needle is.
Love it! I have the same machine from Christmas, have not taken it out of the box yet 🙄😬😉 I want to upcycle clothing with it but it's hard to learn a new machine. Took me 3 days to realize a touch screen on my embroidery machine, meant you had to actually TOUCH the screen to turn it on. 😂😂 LOVE your videos!
Take the serger outta the box!! Lol, that made me laugh because mine sat in the box for a month. Then sat on my sewing table for ANOTHER month. I saw a vid titled "Don't be afraid of your serger", that helped.
love love love this! I know my serger have them but well I only used lettuce hem once with my old one and wasn't impressed! I will be making some leggins soon so looking to check out this flatlock on my new serger :D thanks!
I have purchased a new Janome My Lock 644D and still learning how to use it correctly with the settings etc for knit but as you say you have to experiment with this to get it right. Have had an Elna which has been retired as having problems with finding replacement parts so hence buying a new serger. I have been doing blind hemming with the Janome sewing machine and rather like the results I get with my knits. Thank you for your tutorial.
First I would like to say, that I am so thrilled to have found your videos 💃! This is the 3rd or 4th one that I have watched. And each one is very good and your bright and smiling face makes me smile too! Second, I want to say that I am a beginner and have only been sewing for about a year now. I can’t believe how much I enjoy it. I’m just sorry I didn’t start years ago, lol. Third, I have a couple of questions. I just bought my first serger. Which happens to be the exact same model that you are using in this video! The Brother 1034 dx, which I am just getting to know. But I really like it. Can you tell me, when you are using the gathering foot to add a ruffle to the flat piece, how much fabric do you need to use to make the ends equal at the end of the seam? Also, in the video you have a note stating that you secure your seam after serging (gathering) it, by straight stitching it on your sewing machine. Why is this necessary? Doesn’t the serger make a secure enough stitch? Or is it just personal preference? I too received those 3 feet with my machine so I want to use it correctly. Finally, how do you use the elastic foot for the serger? That is if one can be found to purchase. I have looked everywhere including Brother and can’t find one that is the correct model number for purchase. But if I do find one, I do want to be able to use it properly. I apologize for the long comment, I’m just very excited to have found your channel 🦋
Great tips! Never thought of the flatlock for a hem and your use of the rolled hem in various applications is so helpful - especially the pintucks. An unrelated question - I love the shirt that you are wearing, especially the ruching/elastic around the sleeve wrist! Wow! Would you please share the pattern? Or do you have a video tutorial on this lovely way to switch up the look of a sleeve like this?
Great video, I always roll hem my table cloths, never thought of using it for sleeves etc. (My machine do not stitch when disengaging the serger's cutter/knife/scissor out, I have an Empisel serger)
Hello there, Jasmine! You can download the manual for Brother 1034 DX from Brother website ans search for pintuck technique. As I mentioned in the video, you put it with the folded edge, same technique as the rolled hem, only instead of the raw edge of the fabric, you do it on a fold.
I love your videos especially on how to use my serger. Do you have a pattern or a how-to video on the top you’re showing in this video that has the layered rolled hem sleeves. The top is white with black and pink flowers. It is beautiful!!!
I just bought this exact model a couple of days ago. I've lost over 100lbs and treated myself to my first serger. I've still got my original Kenmore sewing machine that I made my kids clothes on 40 years ago and my Brother embroidery machine that I used for my granddaughter. I always wanted a serger but never could justify buying one until now. This time is for me. Thank you for the tutorial. I've not unboxed it yet because I'm turning my spare room into a sewing room. Now I'm looking forward to using it. I'm going to practice these hems first.
I have almost the same serger. Somehow managed to break a needle… I was able to replace it using the manual… but I haven’t been able to get all the threads to lock ever since and there seems to be ZERO brother references on how to thread or learn to fix whatever I must have done wrong…. I’ve literally tried Re threading it hundreds of times… with no luck terribly frustrating as I was totally loving it.
Laurie, I might be wrong as I am no serger expert, but it does seem that you serger "timing" is off. I had that happen to me once, after accidentally going over a metal part of a zipper - broke a needle, replaced it and could not get the threads to lock in a normal 4 thread seam, because although the serger worked - the sequence, the precise timing of when each element does their job, was off ( I am assuming due to the impact of going over the metal part of the zipper). I had to take it to the repair shop. I had my husband tinker on it and neither one of us could fix it. From what I know - timing is one of those issues that is rarely fixed in domestic circumstances unless you have super knowledge and tools.
@@ThoughtfulCreativity omg! Thank you so much and that is exactly what happened in my case… all threads are working they just don’t seem to be “interlocking” with each other (if that’s even the correct wording, lol). Thank you. I will take it to the brother retailer for service asap as I would love to have it available to me every DAY for one reason or another. Thank you so much!
I’m enjoying your tutorials. Thank you for sharing all you techniques. I would love to know how to get the pattern to the blouse you’re wearing in this video. Would you please share where I could get the pattern?

Yeah!!! Finally a TH-cam that uses the same serger as what I have. Thank you!!!!

I have never had a serger but watched and shared anyway.

She has a video from about 6 months ago for sleeve ideas that includes the sleeves on her top.

Brilliant video as always :D
Thank you!
Interesting and good to see visual instruction instead of reading it 🙂
I just found your channel, and love the content!
What serger technique have you tried? Let me know below :)
❤❤❤❤❤ thank you. Can’t wait to try it I have the same serger
Wow thanks for this video it really helps
Great video, I always roll hem my table cloths, never thought of using it for sleeves etc. (My machine do not stitch when disengaging the serger's cutter/knife/scissor out, I have an Empisel serger)
Thank you ❤
Lovely ..please re-film the last technique . How did u put the fabric underneath the pressor foot
Gail, hello there :) open the description of this video - you will see all links there.
I got so many compliments on my sewing once I bought a serger. You will LOVE it! Sewing aching stores often have free classes that are great.
By the way, there are lots of great free patterns like Love Notions Laundry Day Dress, and the Fabric Store’s patterns
You are doing well, keep up the good work
Great video and instructions
Very good ❤
Another fabulous video, so easy to understand ❤
Do you have any “Tips for hemming a circle skirt”?
I do, I have a video about drafting and seeing a circle skirt and there I show how I hem it, very easy and nice.
@@ThoughtfulCreativity you are an excellent teacher and your videos are awesome. Thanks for sharing 😍
Thank you great informative video.😊
I never even HEARD of a serger before! Have only heard of a sewing machine! 😮
I’m enjoying your tutorials. Thank you for sharing all you techniques.
I would love to know how to get the pattern to the blouse you’re wearing in this video. Would you please share where I could get the pattern?
Some great ideas, thank you ❤
