Easy to doubt handicaps without fully understanding ow the WHS now works with best 8 of the last 20 counting. As he says, once those good rounds drop off and the latest 'qualify' it'll go back up. It's just the way of the system unfortunately. Keep up the great work though - excellent content, although need more Woody on the channel - his enthusiasm is a joy to watch.
Guy's people questioning your integrity are not worth the airtime you've just given them. Keep up the good work. I'm looking forward to the summer content to come 👍
Numbers aren't looking too bad. I'm an 8.0 HCP myself and it seems you've got the same problem I did, which is a poor gapping. If you're still a little rusty from the winter, that might explain it, but once you get going again, do another session, take about 5 shots with each club, once you're warmed up ofc, and check gapping again. I found out my 5W, 7W. 3H and 4H went about the same distance, however I hit my 7W far better more frequently than the others, so I decided to take the others out, so my top end is a 5H, 7W and then Driver. Also I cannot recommend a 5H enough if you aren't comfortable with the iron. It is my absolute fav club in the bag. Enjoy the season and happy golfing :D
As a 13 handicap myself, I am capable of shooting 80 and 100. The handicap is not your average round. It’s you playing at your top end. In my range of handicap I can help my team or partner. Not a long hitter myself but very straight and really think my way around. I love your videos!!!!
I cannot believe anyone questions the honesty of the videos on your channel. I enjoy watching you guys play - it’s very relatable. Keep it up I recently bought the same irons (Cobra forged tec x PW-5i) and I never use my 5i either. I should have saved myself some money and bought fewer clubs 😉 This morning I was hitting the ball quite well on the practice range. While walking back to the clubhouse I hit a practice shot from the fairway to the 9th hole. My 6i was going around 160y on the range, but I smashed it on the fairway and it flew 180y dead straight. This is the only time my shot on the course has ever been better than the range!! And, of course, it didn’t mean anything! I bet I don’t hit that shot when it counts 😂
Cheers Mick, I guess it just comes with being exposed online, but claiming I'm a 12 handicap and then openly videoing myself shooting 99 would be pretty idiotic wouldn't it! Great video and very honest. It makes perfect sense if you really understand how a handicap is calculated. If you just can work on the dispersion on the longer clubs, you'll see a big improvement for sure.
I’m really enjoying your content across the Atlantic in Ontario, Canada. Golf season is just starting up again here. Fents, we have similar swing speeds with the driver, and like you suggested, some lessons to improve strike and launch conditions will probably get you up to 225+ carry without changing equipment. Same with getting more out of your 5 and 6 irons, though replacing those with hybrids as someone else mentioned might be the play. Hoping I can get my handicap down to 12 this season. Keep the great videos coming!

Interesting point about new clubs and stronger lofts. Makes sense that the longer irons are just really hard to hit as they are pretty flat as you say. Your 5 or 6 is like a 3 or 4…so you only have 7,8,9,P that are readily usable…?
Question for Fents, why do you have the 5 and 6 irons in your bag, why did you not stop at the 7 ion and get another couple of hybrids, as you are far more confident with a hybrid?
Hi Robert, it's something I want to get better with and be able to hit these clubs well, so when I got my new set I included them in. I do agree with you however that right now I'd probably benefit from different hybrids for sure. When I have some lessons hopefully this will help me to hit them better and they'll become useful clubs for me!
I use irons 4 to sw. My irons were fitted to me in 2001 and are lofted accordingly, not like the modern jacked lofts. I also play a 4 hybrid. The 4 iron is used for all types of shot with a decent lie, also it's handy in specific situations, keeping a shot lower for instance. Playing from under trees, wind etc. I dont really like the hybrid and I'm more confident with the long irons to be honest.
Being from Leeds myself I’d love to play a few holes with you guys ( off camera) do you always film your rounds? new to the game myself, about 14 months in. Hoping to improve to under 20 handicap this year. Love what you’re doing and I think it’s mostly due to the honesty and banter and seeing you improve.Keep it coming will ya..
Cheers man! We don't film all the time no, we do like to try and get some casual rounds in where we can, but it depends what we have on, as I work full time, so usually when I play I like to get some content filmed for you guys! Good to see a new golfer getting into the game and enjoying it, and enjoying our content that means a lot! Where do you usually play?
Best place for me is Scalm park if you’ve heard of that, Horsforth I like. I’m fortunate enough that my boss plays and we practice every day in a huge manor garden in York on a refurb job where doing. I’ve been to back nine as well👍🏻
Great video I totally believe you guys. I'm a 13 handicapper and can relate. If you are looking for a new driver try out a titliest tsr3 driver. I was fitted with one just recently and drive the ball a lot straighter than I have with any other driver. Cheers keep up the good work.
Ya I gave up on long irons so now my set is Taylormade Stealth 6-PW,AW,SW……3-4-5 Hybrid’s Titleist TS1 1-3-5 woods , everything has senior graphite shafts . Now all I have to do is learn how to hit my clubs 😂😂😂😂. I just enjoy playing and don’t really worry about my score so much anymore…Keep hittin then Fellas 👍🏼👍🏼
I'm off 13 distances all similar to you except my driver that carries 220 runs out to 250 on GC quad, Callaway Rogue st max stiff shaft well worth a try for you
Nice nice nice. As a recommendation - practice the 5 iron or may use a 5 hybrid for a bit. If the driver ain't broke don't replace it yet. Practice it before replacing it. Love the honest content. Keep at it
Swap the 5 and 6 for hybrids. You'll definitely feel more confident over the ball and it seems like the rest of your iron set you have a good gapping and decent consistency. I also bet you'll keep your driver longer than you think. You are hitting down on your driver, which is super common. It's actually hard to hit a driver well and hit irons well as an amateur golfer, because the swings are different. With some lessons you'll probably learn to hit a bit more up on the Ball and you'll see that carry number jump a lot for the driver.
Cheers Daz! We have a match coming out next week between me and Luke. Therell also be more match related content over the summer! Thanks for all the support!
My buddy had the same chat on his channel, handicap looks like a vanity handicap after the winter and comments were nasty. Keep it up! Love the content and good vibes. I’m a ping guy, the new 430 max 10k has some pretty solid reviews for the forgiveness, but I’m still gaming the demo 425 I got from a retailer.
Cheers mate! Exactly, there's no need for us to lower our handicaps, if anything it would make us look more stupid! Definitely a driver I'll be looking at!
I’m a 13 hcp. I see no reason to have long irons in my bag. Play the Cobra aerojet one length irons. Ordered them from 8(!) to GW. But the lofts are ridiculously strong😂. Bought a 6 hybrid. My absolute favorite club! Cannot hit it badly. The numbers are fantastic. Spin, launch, distance, consistency, dispersion… REALLY recommend. Then I go with 4 hybrid, 5 wood, driver.
@@FentsGolf I was fitted last summer for the cobra forged tec one length irons. I hit the 6 iron well from a flat lie on the driving range. But I could see myself in the rough, downhill lie and water to carry… I knew that I never would be confident enough to launch a 5 or 6 iron from that situation… With the 6 hybrid I do it with pleasure. I eventually ended up with the aerojet irons😊
fentsy, i've got similar club speed as you. if you love the SZ, maybe try getting fit for a new shaft might be the budget trick. :D great vid as usual guys!
@@FentsGolf I’ve similar club speed as you and I’m using a stiff flex at 55g. Also heard that graphite shafts tend to “lose” distance as it gets old and worn out.
What shafts do you have in your irons fents. I got told to use stiff but just couldn't get used to them so went back to my regular i find a slower swing is better for my game then trying to smack a stiff iron and ....... i also hate 5 iron and carry a 4 hybrid as alternate and also a 3 hybrid. Well said about handicap, there is no benefits to doctoring your handicap . Keep up the good work and keep the videoa coming . Well in the up &down golf gang ......oh quickly what shafts does luke have in his p790s
Hi Barry, we both just have regular shafts in our iron sets. My irons are the only thing I've been fit for, my woods and wedges have just been off the shelf purchases so that's why my shafts differ in those! Thanks for the support!
Don’t give these people a second thought who doubt you guys I’m a 22.1 handicap player I’ve been playing just over a year and a half I work in Leeds and would love to get a round in with you guys sometime
If you and fents are interested and even Dennis I’m a member at tankerley park golf club in Sheffield and could sort you guys a cheap rate to come play with me
Good video Mr Fents 😅 I would guess you are losing abit of distance with your driver because you are hitting down at the ball rather than hitting up. That's why every so often you get the PW drive as at the moment of impact the club is travelling down towards the ground and you are catching the ball high in the club head face. A quick tip I use is to visualise hitting underneath the ball rather than the back of the ball.
@@FentsGolf That's golf, always something that you need to work on 😂 I watched a fitting video the other day on TH-cam by Elite Performance golf and the customer had the same club head speed as yourself and was carrying it 230 yards rolling out to 250. You've got enough speed to be sneaking it past Luke on the odd occasion 😂😂 Also check your ball position, experiment with having the ball inline with your left heal/big toe.
The current HC system just makes it look like there's more "vanity" handicaps. But look if you play around the leeds area and you can reliably hit the ball 200 yards there's no reason you can't get down to single figures. The courses are typically 6000-6700 yards, they aren't that long. Also Fents just buy a 5 hybrid and throw the 5 iron in the river
I think you’ll surprise yourself when you get a driver fitting as I’m a Ping man but upgraded my G425 and ended up with the Callaway AI smoke as consistency was a lot better and I even tried the G430 10k too, great vid as always, keep them coming guys 🏌🏼♂️👍🏼👍🏼
Cheers man! I'll definitely be trying all the drivers and just go with whatever works best! For my OCD I'd love it to be the Cobra Darkspeed though haha
Great choice! Just switched to the Qi10 Max from the SIm2 Max and it was a tough choice, but ultimately I got a better dispersion and a little more distance.
Gents, I don’t hung up on the number on the club just use the clubs you are comfortable and confident with. It’s better and more enjoyable to hit a good shot even if it’s a little shorter than you would like than trying to gain more yards with a club which is difficult to use and can lead to frustration. The main thing is enjoy it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching everyone. Shout out to Humza at American golf for hooking me up with my irons! When i get back playing in the UK shortly my handicap will more accurately reflect how im playing now, but as you can see with how its attested i cant do much about the handicap im given. Im realistic to know im shooting at arpund 18-24 at the moment and nowhere near 12!
I wouldn't worry about the odd nob waffling on about your handicap mate, there's always one or two smart arses. It's just not cool questioning a chaps integrity. Dont give up on that driver, save your money and then spend it on some lessons. New equipment is nice to have but not necessarily needed to improve. Three years old is brand new to me 😆 I'm still using Mizuno irons from 2001. I had a lesson recently and the pro asked me what the old irons i was using were. Showed him an he laughed, told him to have a hit and he did. Turned round and said "they feel bloody lovely" 😂. Stick at it lads, the channels cracking.
Yeah I've been playing long than Luke but his improvements have been rapid and well deserved with the time he puts in, I unfortunately don't put enough time in practice wise.
Seems to be a golf and golfer thing, if you have a high handicap you're a bandit, when it starts to drop it's ego and vanity. Unfortunately you put yourself in the firing line with TH-cam and you'll probably always get this no matter what you do. Love the video again, keep up the good work and I look forward to the next one 👍
I reckon you should try the cobra LTDx LS driver fents! I have the new darkspeed LS driver and still preferred my LTDx LS! fair play for the explanation, i think though your missing the main point of the hc, i beleive you should run a card every time you play unless practicing, that 99 you mentioned wasnt on there, it has to be as many rounds as phisicaly possible or it can never be acurate i was 13, 8 end of summer im now 15:1 but i continue to run a card if im playing with a partner, not having a dig just my opinion
Unfortunately Lee we can't put rounds we play abroad onto our England Golf app towards our handicap. I completely agree with you that all rounds should be added, but its something we're limited by, therefore if I ever do enter comps or anything I have to play off whatever England Golf has me down as
@leedemetriou4648 Unfortunately we're not part of a club either, we get our handicaps through England Golf and iGolf, as far as I am aware there is no way to input these scores. If there is then I'm happy to take advice

I have never understood why you would cheat in any sport. In golf you handicap is a reflection of your skill. If you cheat to lower your handicap then you are shooting yourself in the foot as you lose shots on the round. If you cheat to increase your handicap just so in competitions you have a better chance of winning then you are only cheating yourself and that trophy you have on your mantle piece is just a reminder of how much of a cheat and is not really an achievement. You guys are honest and if shows. Keep up the good work.
Cheers Timmy! Exactly, we play in a society and having a low handicap would mean I'm entering comps to have zero chance of winning! Thanks for the support!
Driver… Taylormade Qi10, Ventus blue 5 s (stiff) shaft, 10.5 degree head Cobra darkspeed, max, stiff flex UST mamiya Lin-q shaft (F4) 10.5 degree head. And the reason your not hitting driver well…. Your leaning into your downswing. Hit the the backswing at slower tempo… Keep your head in central position and driver legs and arms through. Should be minimal movement.

The 4 iron is used for all types of shot with a decent lie, also it's handy in specific situations, keeping a shot lower for instance. Playing from under trees, wind etc. I dont really like the hybrid and I'm more confident with the long irons to be honest.
@@geoffhiggins742 Fair enough, we are all different!!..
Thanks for watching!
I’ve been to back nine as well👍🏻
Ahh that practice session sounds class dude!
Great video I totally believe you guys. I'm a 13 handicapper and can relate. If you are looking for a new driver try out a titliest tsr3 driver. I was fitted with one just recently and drive the ball a lot straighter than I have with any other driver. Cheers keep up the good work.
Thanks Chris, heard good things about that driver 👍
Not bad at all those distances! Good thing is nearly everything there went straight!!!
If only that happened on the course too!
@@FentsGolf no fun in that. Best to take the adventurous route. Keep up the good work!!!
Haha very true Neil!
My driving randomness has improved a lot with a Ping G425. Give it a try! I’m 10 HCP
I like that driver 👍
Hey Fents. Have you tried a 5 hybrid? Love mine. Great content cheers from Canada.
Thanks for watching George
Nice video Fents, you are definitely pretty good on distances up to the 6 iron. Maybe 5 hybrid would be a good move or 7 and 9 wood.
Cheers Kev, yeah I agree. Going to be something I look into!
Good shout Kev
@@FentsGolf Give it a try Fents, I have been experimenting a lot with the top end of my bag and have found some nice additions to the bag.
Cheers Tex! I definitely want to try get better with them.

I just got the new Callaway smoke AI driver and I absolutely crush the ball with it. Try it out when looking for new diver.
Cheers man, on the radar!
Thanks for watching!
I'm off 13 distances all similar to you except my driver that carries 220 runs out to 250 on GC quad, Callaway Rogue st max stiff shaft well worth a try for you
Cheers Pete, one to add to the list to try!
Thanks for watching Pete
Fents , changed to the PingG430 MAX earlier in the year , a game changer for me off 13 !!
Cheers Steve! One I'm going to try for sure!
Ooh I've looked at that driver a few times myself
@@UpDownGolf Try it , your love it !!
Fents is the absolute GOAT
Cheers Noah! Appreciate the support!
🐐
Nice nice nice.
As a recommendation - practice the 5 iron or may use a 5 hybrid for a bit. If the driver ain't broke don't replace it yet. Practice it before replacing it.
Love the honest content. Keep at it
Cheers Mike, I'll definitely try improve the 5 iron, but maybe also use a 5 hybrid too!
Thanks for watching Mike!
100%, hitting down just ends up feeling more natural
Thanks mate. Its definitely something I need to work on and get lessons on!
Love these videos. Well done lads. Interesting that 👍🏽
Are the matches with the lads coming back this year ?
Cheers Daz!
We have a match coming out next week between me and Luke.
Therell also be more match related content over the summer! Thanks for all the support!
Hoping so!
Think it's time for a Q&A lads, like what do you do for a living, where's woody, what's your favourite course etc etc etc
Yeah would be happy to answer any burning questions anyone has! Woody is still defrosting over winter
Good shout 👍
a driver you might wanna try is a Taylormade Stealth 2 HD or a Ping G430 10K both very forgiving good video cheers from Vulcan Canada
Thanks dude!
Nice video lads! I’m a member at Moor Allerton in Leeds and if you ever want a round let me know 👍🏻 would love to play with you guys
Appreciate that man!
Thanks for watching!
Cheers Andreas I'm definitely going to look into getting another hybrid for sure! If it helps my game then I'm all for it!
That's a funky bag Andreas, I like it 👍
Great video chaps!
Cheers Liam! Thanks for the support
Thanks for watching Liam!
fentsy, i've got similar club speed as you. if you love the SZ, maybe try getting fit for a new shaft might be the budget trick. :D great vid as usual guys!
Great shout Ed!
I have thought about trying a stiff shaft to see if it will do anything! Maybe I should try this first
@@FentsGolf I’ve similar club speed as you and I’m using a stiff flex at 55g.
Thanks for watching Barry!
Don’t give these people a second thought who doubt you guys I’m a 22.1 handicap player I’ve been playing just over a year and a half I work in Leeds and would love to get a round in with you guys sometime
Appreciate it Charlie!
If you and fents are interested and even Dennis I’m a member at tankerley park golf club in Sheffield and could sort you guys a cheap rate to come play with me
Thanks Charlie 👍
I think the Wilson wedge is not 60º, it is 55 or 56, it has the "S" and that is generally for a sand wedge.
It's that old mate I can't tell! It feels and looks even more lofted than 60deg though when I'm at address!
It is a strange club, I can confirm haha
The British answer to Fat Perez ! The most Chilled out vibey guy about Fents
Cheers man! Thanks for the support!
Aha yes, what a shout!
Maybe the next move Fents is to ditch the long irons for 7W and 9W? Enjoy your videos guys!
Not a bad shout I think
Have a try of the taylor made M1
Cheers man, I'll have a look into it!
Thanks for watching!
Take the 5 iron out of your bag and replace it with another hybrid or a 5 wood ?
Definitely something I'm going to look into Phil
He's good with the hybrids
Dang...i am completely opposite. I hit my 3, 4, 5 irons fine and can't seem to hit 6 or 7 at all...mostly skip right to the 8, 9 or wedges.
So strange how we're all different isn't it mate! As long as we enjoy the game though!
I'm the same dude!
Good video Mr Fents 😅
I would guess you are losing abit of distance with your driver because you are hitting down at the ball rather than hitting up. That's why every so often you get the PW drive as at the moment of impact the club is travelling down towards the ground and you are catching the ball high in the club head face.
A quick tip I use is to visualise hitting underneath the ball rather than the back of the ball.
That makes a lot of sense!
Cheers Forbes! Yeah it's a hard transition to make, one I need to work on!
@@FentsGolf That's golf, always something that you need to work on 😂
I watched a fitting video the other day on TH-cam by Elite Performance golf and the customer had the same club head speed as yourself and was carrying it 230 yards rolling out to 250.
You've got enough speed to be sneaking it past Luke on the odd occasion 😂😂
Also check your ball position, experiment with having the ball inline with your left heal/big toe.
He wishes! 😉
Totally agree Migs. Some of the courses are very gettable
I still use a cobra F8 and still like it
Nice Kelly 👍
Doesn't always have to be new gear does it!
Interesting, cheers dude!
Driver I'd recommend Sim 2 Max. Pick a new one up for £250 atm 👍
Cheers Baz, one to add to the list!
Thanks for watching Baz
Great choice! Just switched to the Qi10 Max from the SIm2 Max and it was a tough choice, but ultimately I got a better dispersion and a little more distance.
Gents, I don’t hung up on the number on the club just use the clubs you are comfortable and confident with. It’s better and more enjoyable to hit a good shot even if it’s a little shorter than you would like than trying to gain more yards with a club which is difficult to use and can lead to frustration. The main thing is enjoy it. Thanks for sharing.
Completely agree Jonathan! Enjoyment is paramount
Thanks for watching Jonathan!
Where's the chipper! No chipper, no party I'm afraid
Chipper 100 yards
Thanks for watching everyone. Shout out to Humza at American golf for hooking me up with my irons!
When i get back playing in the UK shortly my handicap will more accurately reflect how im playing now, but as you can see with how its attested i cant do much about the handicap im given. Im realistic to know im shooting at arpund 18-24 at the moment and nowhere near 12!
Are you dating Humza?
@@UpDownGolfGets a lot of mentions 😉

@FentsGolf and I changed my grip to a stronger one, i.e. see 3 knuckles on left hand

Don’t worry about the hcp Fentz, there was a time not long ago where you were giving Luke a run for his money and beating him if I’m not wrong?
Yeah I've been playing long than Luke but his improvements have been rapid and well deserved with the time he puts in, I unfortunately don't put enough time in practice wise.
You're not wrong Ryan 👍
Seems to be a golf and golfer thing, if you have a high handicap you're a bandit, when it starts to drop it's ego and vanity. Unfortunately you put yourself in the firing line with TH-cam and you'll probably always get this no matter what you do. Love the video again, keep up the good work and I look forward to the next one 👍
We have, you're right Jon. Appreciate you watching mate!
Wilson dynopower driver for fents.

@@UpDownGolf changed from stealth to Wilson. Honestly a great driver and affordable.
Shockingly similar yardages wedges thru 5 iron…decent with the 6 and TERRIBLE with my 5.
I think a lot of people are the same mate
I reckon you should try the cobra LTDx LS driver fents! I have the new darkspeed LS driver and still preferred my LTDx LS! I know people say the LS model is for players that hit it faster and really well, but I found for a slice, the LS model doesn't slice quite as much and rolls further!
Don't worry about the handicap police either mate 😅
It's definitely one I'm going to try, it's the LTDx I have for my hybrid and its arguably my best club on the bag.
Thanks for watching Jimmy!
@@UpDownGolf No probs man, got right into golf basically when you guys started the channel so been watching from the start! Been good to see the progress, and relatable content! :)
fair play for the explanation, i think though your missing the main point of the hc, i beleive you should run a card every time you play unless practicing, that 99 you mentioned wasnt on there, it has to be as many rounds as phisicaly possible or it can never be acurate i was 13, 8 end of summer im now 15:1 but i continue to run a card if im playing with a partner, not having a dig just my opinion
Unfortunately Lee we can't put rounds we play abroad onto our England Golf app towards our handicap. I completely agree with you that all rounds should be added, but its something we're limited by, therefore if I ever do enter comps or anything I have to play off whatever England Golf has me down as
@@FentsGolf respect for replying, however thats not actualy true you just need to inform your club that you want to enter a card
@leedemetriou4648 Unfortunately we're not part of a club either, we get our handicaps through England Golf and iGolf, as far as I am aware there is no way to input these scores. If there is then I'm happy to take advice
@@FentsGolf my advice is join a club save a fortune :)) good luck for the coming season bud i think they may have made that change this year to eg not a 100% but think i heard it on the golf grape vine
@@leedemetriou4648 Doesn't help being a member when temp tees and greens are in use over winter. It's almost impossible to keep an up to date hcp through winter.
Exactly Timmy, if you cheat you are only cheating yourself really
