I found this hilarious that this episode came out the same weekend I bought this game at a clearance sale cuz a board game store was closing down. I just bought it cuz the cute girl told me it was her fave game XD
Darkendragon You made an excellent decision it's a totally fun game. that I'm trying to play more of.. ya know combat the whole cult of the new syndrome.
I like the idea of constantly having to change your species traits to match what your opponents have. I would probably make all my species carnivores and put up with all my species attacking each other.
Just bought Evolution last week. Read the instructions, but it's always great to see actual gameplay, and have questions answered before I even need to ask them! I know it's been out for a while, but thanks for this. Great video!
Detailed and excellent as always! I can never sit through a video of more than 15min till i saw your videos. Really appreciate the effort!! The first channel i go to if im researching on a new game :)
Great choice Rodders. I really like this one - the theme, the originality in the gameplay, and of course the artwork. Great to see you giving this one some love. We like to play this as a family too :)
Whenever I buy a new board game, I immediately try to find out if your channel has an explanation video for it! It's always nice to have someone else confirm your understanding of something.
Sir, thanks for letting me watch! My mother introduced me to board games / card games and she is a lover of nature and loves not too complex yet visually and mentally stimulating. Your children must be really lucky to have a father like you who not only enjoys board games but is also great at explaining things well and patiently. Touchwood. Lastly, I would like to ask you if I can do anything for you. Not as a formality, just out of gratitude and want to let everyone know about something so good. Good work always deserves appreciation and recognition. Well done Sir! You were so precise in all your actions and words. You knew what was where and which nitty grittys to mention! Thank you
From the rulebook, this seemed like a relatively easy game to understand, but I still had a few questions. Your video answered those questions. Thanks for clarifying!
great explanation ! as per the game, i am always impresssed by what designers come up with regarding science or a real life scenario. I would call this a "collections" category game, but that's a broad category.

So glad you are doing this series. Maybe now people will actually hear about the game. We gave out the TableTop promos, and everyone is like "is this an expansion?"
Ah, got you. I do my best to answer all rules questions on the games I cover, but I avoid individual card effects, as that's a level of detail beyond what I can manage across all the videos I do. I'd suggest checking the rules forum for the game on BoardGameGeek or the publishers website. I hope you can find your answer there - have fun playing!
nice video. May I have a question? what happens if in the beginning of the game the total number of food cards shows a negative number? in that case it means that no food token goes to the lake? thanks
If the total number is a negative value then you must remove that number of food from the pool (if possible). This means there can be 0 plant food available.
Random question: does the warning call last for the entire round or can the carnivore just eliminate the species equipped with warning call to attacked the adjacent species in the same round?

blipadouzi Yep, you may have missed it. It's mentioned here: th-cam.com/video/-BJ6TUFE_yY/w-d-xo.htmlm52s -and specifically, the target must have a smaller body size - it can't attack equal sized either. Thanks for the kind words on the video!
wait you can play right AND left? did they change how species round works? I thought in 1st Edition we had to play one card at a time and then round robin. watering hole has better coloring. The 1st edition you could lose food to the background. Blue better than green in this case.
First off, thank you so much for such well crafted, clear videos! I couldn't stop laughing during the Blood Rage - How To Play because it was so weird to hear such a calm, cheerful voice reminding me that I need rage in order to do anything. Secondly, I feel like North Star Games missed a trick with their last tie-breaker. In keeping with the theme of the game, I feel like the winner should be whomever eats the most of the pizza, and in case of a tie there a second game should be played.
Hi! I have a question Rodney I hope you can help me with, when I evolve a Carnivorous trait, what happens to my non carnivorous traits already in play please? And may I evolve a non-carnivorous trait on a carnivorous animal, Hard Shell and Scavanger for instance, please?
You can always put non-carnivorous traits onto a Carnivore. Many of them will continue to function as well, such as Hard Shell. The important rule to remember though is that Carnivores cannot eat plant food. So something like Long Neck would not provide you any food before cards are revealed. Scavenger, on the other hand, would continue to function as it provides meat.
With 2nd edition....so you can discard traits from existing species at anytime? Looks to be that way. When you discard those previously used traits you get nothing in return?
Am I correct in thinking that this second edition removes the "leaf icons" that were present in the upper right corner of cards which have an ability that's triggered during the feeding phase? And that abilities that trigger during the feeding phase are now signified by the border color/design of the card? If so, that seems like a very interesting design decision.
I'm new to the game, let's see if I understand, for each player's turn, I can only play the cards that I have in hand? Can't I discard a card from my hand and draw a new one? If possible, what is the maximum that could be done?
Hi Carlos, it's been awhile since I shot this, but if the video doesn't tell you that you can discard cards to draw new ones, then you can't. This would be covered in the video though, so be sure to check it out if you're unsure.
Hi Rodney, excellent video as always. We started playing the climate version, but ran into some issues. With cards that tell you to take food from the food bank, what happens if you have to take more food than your population size allows? Does it go in your bag or do you just not take it? Also with the cards that tell you to take 1 more food token when taking food, if the food is taken from the food bank, is the extra food taken from the food bank or the watering hole?
Great video! We played for the first time last night and loved it even though we have had the game for 2 years. Question, if you have long neck and cooperation on one species and it gets fed before the food cards are revealed does the species to the right get fed from the food bank also? And if that species gets food and has the cooperation trait does the next one on the right get food from the bank? Like a daisy chain effect if the all have cooperation trait.
Thanks for checking out the video! You're exactly right with your answer. If two of them have co-operation, they can each take a food in this situation, all of which is from the same place.
Wonderful video. Question - Can you apply a pack hunting trait to a species before applying a carnivore trait? Or does it always need to be the other way around? Does the pack hunting trait alone allow you to attack other species?
You can apply Pack Hunting to a species first, but it essentially provides no benefit (because the species must have the Carnivore trait to attack other species). Pack Hunting alone does not turn your species into a Carnivore.
This was going to be my question: do species become carnivore's as soon as you place a red type card on them, or do you need to specifically use the Carnivore card. Seems like its the latter. Thanks!
I like it when designers mix in easter eggs in the rules as joke. Like the ordering the pizza to break ties. The party game Ticked Off says,"if there is a tie the two players must fight to the death ,but away from the table so not to get blood on the board."
I’m confused about the turn order. After the first round how many cards do you get on your next turn? Can you play all the cards in your hand on your turn? What order do players let there species eat in? And gay pass the dinosaur? Isn’t it to keep track of who played first or doesn’t everyone get one last turn?
Hey George. The number of cards you are dealt each round is explained here: th-cam.com/video/-BJ6TUFE_yY/w-d-xo.html You asked if a person can play all the cards in their hand. You'll find that explained here: th-cam.com/video/-BJ6TUFE_yY/w-d-xo.html I'd suggest watching the video through again. You might find your questions are answered, and it will save me hunting through the video to find the answers for you. Hope that helps, and have fun playing!
every time i find a game im interested in buying i look up reviews and if they get good reviews i look up how-to-play. . . i get giddy when the first thing that pops up is WIP. then i know i'm in for a real treat.
Excellent vid! Roughly how long does one game take to play? Your explanations are great! This game looks great it $33 seems steep compared to other games.
Thanks for checking out the video! I tend to avoid weighing in on game lengths, as it really does make a big difference who the players are. Some players play fast, some play slow.
Looks fun! I know that body size affects how much meat a carnivore gets from attacking that animal, but is there anything else body size affects? For example, can a level 1 body herbivore/omnivore or carnivore attrack a level 6 herbivore?
The body size affects whether or not a creature can be attacked. So in the example you give, unless it has an extra ability that bypasses it's body size, the carnivore with body size 1 could not attack the body size 6 herbivore. Or even another body size 1 herbivore for that matter. You need to be larger!
Etienne Lessard you mean you cant wait for it to finish right? because it's already opened. www.kickstarter.com/projects/1923120194/the-evolution-game-system
I'm in the same boat as you... or maybe not actually I have the first edition so I'm just backing for the expansion and the replacement cards. The changes they're making to things like pack hunting are going to be very interesting to the balance.
EXPLODINGdesk It's one I would consider for a game play, but my May is going to be pretty packed for video creation, and I have a couple game plays planned out already for that.
You can add as many traits to as many of your species that you have in play as you have cards in hand just as long as you do not exceed 3 traits per species and no duplicates within a single species. When discarding traits from species, you can discard 1, 2, or all 3 traits from a single species in order to attach new traits to that species.
Great tutorial, very through and taught the game very well. Thanks so much! If you are open to suggestions on your video, I would recommend removing the intro you had at the beginning with your channel name/logo animated as it doesn't add anything to the video and probably kills audience retention. But otherwise, a very good video.
Very glad you enjoyed it Cooper! The intro length is an interesting factor. Because I make tutorial videos, I feel the content gets a bit of a pass in that regard - a person who drifts during a 15 second intro, likely isn't going to last for a 17 dense teaching video either, know what I mean? That said, this is one of my older videos and the intro on my newer videos has been changed, and is now 6 seconds, so it turns out we do agree :). Cheers, and have fun playing!
Hey there, glad you liked the video. I do tend to avoid trying to answer questions related to specific cards - it gets too hard for me to keep track of all that information across all games, so best to check with the publisher for that kind of detail.
Hey Minh, I believe if you check the description of the video, you'll find an index, and there is a link there that will take you to the rules on going extinct. Hope that helps.
My bad :) round one: I’m a plant based creature and I store 2 plant food into fat tissue. Round two: I play Carnivore trait on the same creature. Before the food cards are revealed, can I transfer “plant” fat onto the carnivore species board?
@@АлександраЮжанинова-г3ш Ah, I understand now. Unfortunately, I avoid getting into card specific interactions on the channel, because I cover so many different games (and I don't have my copy handy to dig out the cards and try to offer my quick thoughts). It makes it hard for me to speak with authority with so many possible combinations of cards, once you get down to that level - in these cases I recommend going to the publisher directly - you may also find the answer on BoardGameGeek where others have asked previously as well. Sorry I couldn't be a more direct help.
I just wanted to see how it worked in real life, because in the app it seems that each round requires a lot of moving and the end of the game seems to have quite a bit of counting for the points
yea i could tel by the box art, btw they announced that if you own the original and back the new Flight expansion on Kickstarter they will send you the updated cards
rules question. Okay. so let's say I am playing against Billy. Billy has a herbivore with a population 5 and body size 1. I have a carnivore with population 5 and body size 2. (no traits) There is no food in the waterhole. Billy is first player. Which scenario is correct for the rules? Scenario 1. Billy cant eat. so he goes extinct (population 5 to extinct in one shot) . then its my turn and my carnivore can't eat him because he is extinct, so i go extinct. Or scenario 2. Billy cant eat. so goes down to 4 population. Then its my turn. i Eat him. so he goes down to 3 population. It's Billys turn again. he cant eat because still no food. then he goes down to 2 population. It's my turn, I eat him. He goes down to 1 population. His turn. no food, so he becomes extinct.
You won't go extinct from food shortage until after all eating has been completed. So in the situation you describe, Billy would not eat and would simply wait for you to finish eating. You have a body size of 2, so you could eat him twice, reducing his population to 3. Then after all feeding is done, you'd lower every species population down to their fed population level. So Billy would go extinct at this point.
Watch It Played there is a simpler shorter 5 player version called evolution the beginning. I don’t really like that one but it does have the traits flight and speed which the carnivores must also have to attack your species if you’re species has them. That just seems funner. But evolution the beginning doesn’t sound like an add on. It’s a stand alone game. I can’t believe evolution has climb but not speed or flight. Kinda stinks for someone who doesn’t want to buy every version and variant of them game.
Just to be clear (because the rule book also confused me): when a carnivore causes a species to go extinct, the carnivore player takes the extinct animal's remaining food and places it in the carnivore player's bag. Right? The carnivore gets rewarded for the kill.
Actually, it's placed in the players bag that went extinct (basically, if you had food on you when you died, you still score for having collected it at one point).
OMG just found your channel and WOW I'm hooked. Thank you for the informative, concise rules which are easy to follow. We've been playing Evolution for a while now (since it came out on KS) but have been playing slightly wrong. Will remedy that now! (We haven't been drawing cards to replace traits lost following extinction) Could you please consider doing Betrayal at the house on the hill...? I looked on your channel and I didn't see it there. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betrayal_at_House_on_the_Hill) Thanks!!
Your bags have coloured pictures of the species on it,---i just bought one Evolution and there are just black bags,...why? Was it a kickstarter version you got? Greetings from germany...
Huge deck of cards, not a lot of variance in abilities. Seems like strategy-wise, the game would be played the same way each time. So, how's the replayability on this one? When it comes to this theme of game, I would first go to EVO and Dominant Species. How does Evolution stack up against these two?
Hey Jorun, do not make multiple posts demanding information. It’s not polite. I do my best to answer all comments, but I’m also busy working on other things. And I don’t answer people who are being rude or demanding.
It won't be possible for me to memorize the actual names of my viewers if it is different than their you tube name, so I'll have to refer to you as Jorun. Either way, that's not really the point of this conversation. I mainly want to discourage you from making multiple posts, one after the other, or from making posts that are demanding. I will always reply as soon as I'm able, if there is a relevant question.
hi there i like very much how you explain the rules and games but the truth is i started watching your videos because you used to play them with your kids. it seems you dont do that anymore. it would be very useful to "watch it played". anyway thanks for thw videos.
We still do plenty of play throughs (recently Hero Realms, Kingdomino, and Guild Ball), but maybe you didn't see those? I don't do the play throughs with the kids as much. Andrea is away in University, and Luke is very busy with school and other activities. But I have a friend now who works with me on the channel and is available for the play throughs we do. Hope you still continue to find content you enjoy here.

PairOfDice Paradise I haven't seen the first edition, but you are right, I don't think there is an icon now.
Thanks for the help in understanding the game. :) This really helped
So glad to hear it!
What if my box didnt come with baggies? I just have little food screens for covers instead of baggies.
You may have the 3rd Edition of the game as it comes with those screens!
clear & succinct explanation; cheers!
Thanks Angel - have fun playing!
Hey Goldmink, we have a separate video for the Climate version, you'd want to check that one :)
Very useful and charming video!
Thank you kindly!
Wonderful video. Question -
Can you apply a pack hunting trait to a species before applying a carnivore trait? Or does it always need to be the other way around?
Does the pack hunting trait alone allow you to attack other species?
You can apply Pack Hunting to a species first, but it essentially provides no benefit (because the species must have the Carnivore trait to attack other species). Pack Hunting alone does not turn your species into a Carnivore.
This was going to be my question: do species become carnivore's as soon as you place a red type card on them, or do you need to specifically use the Carnivore card. Seems like its the latter. Thanks!
Order a pizza?! Hahahahaha. I watched this for a club type thing I am in, and that would be funny.
I like it when designers mix in easter eggs in the rules as joke. Like the ordering the pizza to break ties. The party game Ticked Off says,"if there is a tie the two players must fight to the death ,but away from the table so not to get blood on the board."
I thought he said he was kidding about that..
Eric Ruiz Nope he said ,"not kidding." I watched the end of the episode again.
fantastic video, clear explanation. just nailed it. cant resist to press likes and subscribe. Big thx from south Korea
So glad you enjoyed - welcome to the channel!
I’m confused about the turn order. After the first round how many cards do you get on your next turn? Can you play all the cards in your hand on your turn? What order do players let there species eat in? And gay pass the dinosaur? Isn’t it to keep track of who played first or doesn’t everyone get one last turn?
Hey George. The number of cards you are dealt each round is explained here: th-cam.com/video/-BJ6TUFE_yY/w-d-xo.html
You asked if a person can play all the cards in their hand. You'll find that explained here: th-cam.com/video/-BJ6TUFE_yY/w-d-xo.html
I'd suggest watching the video through again. You might find your questions are answered, and it will save me hunting through the video to find the answers for you. Hope that helps, and have fun playing!
This just made the wish list :)
Did you get a chance to try it?
every time i find a game im interested in buying i look up reviews and if they get good reviews i look up how-to-play. . . i get giddy when the first thing that pops up is WIP. then i know i'm in for a real treat.
superchee2e Hey, thanks for that :) Hopefully we cover some more games you're interested in, in the future!
I must say I've seen some strange first player starter rules and tie breaker rules but I think that takes the cake for tie breaker!
Excellent review!
Very glad you enjoyed!
I found the game evolution and it says on the back contents: 6 food screens. I wanted the bags instead. Are there different versions of the game?
Possibly, you might need to check with the publisher on that.
I see they added you to the CoolMiniOrNot expo! Can't wait to meet you and possibly play a game! :D
Josef Caruthers You bet - let's play a game!
Thinking about late pledging the latest version - do you think its playable solo?
+Torkijo I'm not aware of any solo rules.
Hi Rodney, did you get a chance to try the new climate expansion?
I just got a copy of it yesterday. Haven't played yet, but cracked the box and read through the rules. It's actually a fully stand alone game.
I just got mine today, can't wait to see your video for it.
Any idea when you might get time to do one?
asyoz No plans to feature that one. I don't tend to cover expansions (so many games, so little time).
Ah, that makes sense. Thank you!
Hooray! Evo! Thanks Rodney, can't wait for the current kickstarter for 2nd edition and its expansion.
Etienne Lessard you mean you cant wait for it to finish right? because it's already opened.
www.kickstarter.com/projects/1923120194/the-evolution-game-system
Yes that's what I mean. Despite backing it, I still won't have it until August at least. Hence why I can't wait.
I'm in the same boat as you... or maybe not actually I have the first edition so I'm just backing for the expansion and the replacement cards. The changes they're making to things like pack hunting are going to be very interesting to the balance.
Seems fun. Are you going to do a game play video of this one? I'd love to see that.
EXPLODINGdesk It's one I would consider for a game play, but my May is going to be pretty packed for video creation, and I have a couple game plays planned out already for that.
You are such a cool dude! I bet you'd be great to play games with!
You're very kind to say so!
Very helpful thanks very much!
Glad you liked it!
can i place 2 new traits to 1 species? or i can only place 1 new trait to 1 species?
@@WatchItPlayed Thats a great point! Thanks for that explanation and that will help me with my channel too! Thanks again for your video!
Hi, it's a great review , I wanna know Fat tissue card, how it resolve in game, many thanks~
Hey there, glad you liked the video. I do tend to avoid trying to answer questions related to specific cards - it gets too hard for me to keep track of all that information across all games, so best to check with the publisher for that kind of detail.
Wait, how many times can a single carnivore attack during a feeding phase?
Narsuaq Until it is fed.
***** Thanks. Me and my friend played our first game! It was awesome! :D
Narsuaq Happy to help!
Great Stuff.😀
Thanks Dee Dee!
I have a question, please tell me what if I only have 1 species and it becomes extinct, will I be out of the game? (Sorry for my bad writting skill)
Hey Minh, I believe if you check the description of the video, you'll find an index, and there is a link there that will take you to the rules on going extinct. Hope that helps.
@@WatchItPlayed thanks you and by the way, great tutorial !!!!
Great video!
Thanks Phenning!
Plant food stored into Fat - can it become Meat if I add Carnivor trait after? So, is fat - fat ? Or still plant/meat? Thanks
Very sorry, but I'm not quite sure I follow the question. I might need you to provide specific card examples.
A really easy and funny game👍🏻
Glad you like it!
Watch It Played 😆😆
I just wanted to see how it worked in real life, because in the app it seems that each round requires a lot of moving and the end of the game seems to have quite a bit of counting for the points
Thanks for checking the video out!
looks like you are playing with the second edition of evolution (first one has a diffrent creature on the front)
Ward Nightstone Yes, this is the second edition, which has some new art and clarified card text.
yea i could tel by the box art, btw they announced that if you own the original and back the new Flight expansion on Kickstarter they will send you the updated cards
rules question. Okay. so let's say I am playing against Billy.
Billy has a herbivore with a population 5 and body size 1. I have a carnivore with population 5 and body size 2. (no traits)
There is no food in the waterhole.
How come this one doesn’t have flying and speed like the beginning does?
Sorry George, I don’t understand what you’re asking.
@@georgelouis6515 That would be a question for the publisher. I just make tutorials to teach how they are played :)
Does anyone know where his accent is from?
+Ken Knight I do! East Coast of Canada.
I was thinking "What accent?" Then I read the comment and saw he was a fellow Canadian. No wonder I didn't notice an accent. Lol
@@WatchItPlayed Are you a reliable source? 🤔😂
OMG just found your channel and WOW I'm hooked.
Thank you for the informative, concise rules which are easy to follow.
We've been playing Evolution for a while now (since it came out on KS) but have been playing slightly wrong. Will remedy that now! (We haven't been drawing cards to replace traits lost following extinction)
Could you please consider doing Betrayal at the house on the hill...? I looked on your channel and I didn't see it there. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betrayal_at_House_on_the_Hill)
Thanks!!
So glad you've been enjoying the videos Asyoz :)
No current plans to cover Betrayal at House on the Hill, but I'll keep that in mind!
Your bags have coloured pictures of the species on it,---i just bought one Evolution and there are just black bags,...why? Was it a kickstarter version you got? Greetings from germany...
Sandra G. I wonder if that's a difference between the 1st and 2nd edition (this is the second edition that I'm using).
What happens if you run out of food tokens in the food bank before you run out of trait cards?
Hey Rachel, does this part address your question: th-cam.com/video/-BJ6TUFE_yY/w-d-xo.html
Seems like I'd really enjoy that game. Might consider getting it...
End up getting to try it?
@@WatchItPlayed Wow, a reply to a 6 year old comment, that's not something you see a lot :D Yeah, I've played it and it's a great game!
I can play this game with my family
Have fun playing!
Huge deck of cards, not a lot of variance in abilities. Seems like strategy-wise, the game would be played the same way each time. So, how's the replayability on this one?
When it comes to this theme of game, I would first go to EVO and Dominant Species. How does Evolution stack up against these two?
TyphoidBryan I'm not one to review. I will say you might be surprised by just how much variance there is.
what about the gameplay part
We don't do a game play for every game we feature - just depends on time and scheduling.
nice video!
Thank you Binh!
Thanks, Rodney. I found the rulebook much too sparse and vague, lacking important examples. As always, your video was very clear.
+Roger Bartels A pleasure to assist Roger!
Watched this and paused at moments to read the rule book. With Rodney's explanation and the player aids, I won't have to read that rule book again....
Glad this was a help! Hope you have fun playing :)
Instead of food bag i have a food screen maybe this is an Odder edition?
Hey Jorun, do not make multiple posts demanding information. It’s not polite. I do my best to answer all comments, but I’m also busy working on other things. And I don’t answer people who are being rude or demanding.
I’ve deleted your other posts. I’m not sure why your edition may be different. Could be that they made changes. I’m not sure.
My name is cahristian not jorun
It won't be possible for me to memorize the actual names of my viewers if it is different than their you tube name, so I'll have to refer to you as Jorun. Either way, that's not really the point of this conversation. I mainly want to discourage you from making multiple posts, one after the other, or from making posts that are demanding. I will always reply as soon as I'm able, if there is a relevant question.
I really want a draw in this game ...
AlexanderTF PIZZA!
does scavenging allow you to continue to take food beyond your population level?
Hey Nic, a species can never have more food than it's population size.
Who else is here because your Biology Teacher thought it would be fun.
Good biology teacher!
hi there i like very much how you explain the rules and games but the truth is i started watching your videos because you used to play them with your kids. it seems you dont do that anymore. it would be very useful to "watch it played". anyway thanks for thw videos.
Thanks for the reply i will look for those videos. I play with my friends every weekend and im looking new games to try.
