Three "Bullet" Drill | Shotgun Tips with Gil Ash

  • One of the core concepts taught by Gil and Vicki Ash of OSP Shooting School is that shotgun shooters shouldn't look down the barrel, nor at the bead. This drill will help you maintain target acquisition when mounting the shotgun especially when you're looking across the barrel at the bird. Gil and Vicki like to use spent shotgun shell but feel free to use any three objects you prefer; clay targets work well, too. (NSSF Video)

    I began making my transition from shooting with one eye to both eyes after purchasing a Rizzini BR110 Sporter. Needless to say I couldn't hit a garbage can flying through the air. This drill literally made me a good open eye shooter overnight. Thank you so much!

    Great drill. Just after 3-4x at home I improved my shooting. Of course I also suffered from wanting to look down the barrel. This will help break you or that habit as well.

    My favorite drill. Read about it in Sporting Clay magazine. It does help a righty look across the gun. I have watched all of Mr. Ash's videos. First one I've seen with Mrs. Ash. They can call that thing on the rack what they want as far as I am concerned. I'll take their word as gospel when it comes to clay shooting.

    I know this is an old youtube however if you still view these occasionally questions would be: You are focused on the center shell but raising the gun so it will be pointing at the shell left or right of center, 1) during the process are you still mounting the gun as you normally would never taking your focus off the enter shell? 2) At anytime do you switch focus to the shell on the left or right to see if the gun is actually pointing at that shell?

      I took a lesson with Mr. Ash's son Brian a few months ago and asked this same question. He said never look to see if your on target, trust that you are and you will be. One point of the exercise is to break the habit of looking down the barrel so checking to see if your on target would be counterproductive.

    As a waterfoul hunter long before shooting clays I developed a catch up, pass to lead and then shoot while continuing the swing method that I cannot break but works well for me. AKA as bum, beak, bang when the lead looks correct for the speed of the bird, only aware of the muzzle, never 'seeing' the rib, relative to the bird. I've tried a sustained lead and its relative, follow and jump ahead but my scores always suffered. Anyway a day at clays with the gang is always time well spent.

    Yes, they are and should be called shells, however, we often call them bullets at our club. When on a sporting clay's course and someone misjudged the number of shells they bought and run low they often will ask to borrow some bullets until we get back to the clubhouse. We know what they are talking about so it never is a problem.

    When I mount my shotgun I am looking directly down the center of the rib. This method has served me quite well over the past 45 years.

  • @fred1606

    Thanks. I guess this can also work for upward and downward targets if you have 3 objects vertically spaced apart.

      Its the exact opposite in my opinion. Gil is a much better presenter and instructor. Vicki has learned and learns from Gil, not the other way around.

    I am a fast swinger, I start from in back of the bird and as soon as I see daylight in front of the birds beak I touch off the shot.

    These folks seem like very credible teachers as well as competitors. That being said, most firearms enthusiasts will "cringe" when someone describes a cartridge or shotshell as a "bullet." Seems picky I know but true credibility starts with proper knowledge as well as the ability to impart technique.

  • @SHOOTINGlead
    @SHOOTINGlead 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    @crunch9876 say whatever you want, but when you actually shoot a lot and know what you are talking about when it comes to firearms, then it will probably bother you too. It is like referring to an ar-15 as an ak or calling every polymer pistol a glock. When you hear someone talk like they know guns and then hear that, you learn to just nod your head and agree with whatever they say.

    Calling shotshells "bullets" is like calling a collision a "crash", something the police do all the time.

  • @gumballbmx
    @gumballbmx 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    When someone says "I need to put bullets in my gun", they mean ammo or cartridges. The bullet is the projectile that leaves the gun. But when someone calls a shotgun shell a bullet, I'm like "what?"

  • @corneliusbartholemew6725
    @corneliusbartholemew6725 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    HEY, GUESS WHAT!!!!Words mean things! It doesn't matter who can shoot what. That's not an excuse for ANYONE to abandon correct terminology. The two subjects are unrelated.
