You know, in retrospect I shouldn't have been surprised; of _course_ Matt managed to produce a delightful wholesome video. This video is just a distillation of Matt's entire vibe, "getting excited to do a cool thing, having fun and being thrilled with how it turned out" is kind of the short description of... well, most of the content Matt's ever put online!

    • @adamsbja

All three have been very on-brand so far. Matt's wholesomeness, Tom's technically about him driving a zamboni but is full of digressions about the host and everything that goes on behind the scenes, and Gary mugging to the camera while he goofs off with a train stunt.

The musical notes produced by the pots are roughly an F, a B flat, and a C. I'm amazed that they sound so in-tune!
What a wholesome video - this made my day :)
EDIT: Didn't realize the captions had the notes, that's pretty awesome. I'd say the middle pot is still a lot closer to B flat rather than A, but it's no biggie.

This is how it usually goes with great friends. you expect to be hassled and teased and ribbed, but because they know you're actually invested and vulnerable, they mostly cheer you on, offer encouragement and dole out praises where due. So wholesome!

but this one was just, genuinely really cool to see. As you've all said, it is genuine magic to watch this potter stuff in action, and the third one Matt did all by himself is really quite good! So cool!
I also love how each of you film differently. Just fun insight into your mentality, seeing how you film things and such.

When trying to keep your hands still there's a huge difference between keeping the pressure constant and keeping your location constant. If you try to keep the pressure constant, you'll push into every divot and pull back on every mound. You'll exacerbate the out-of-round. It's very counterintuitive

    • @ragnkja

So the goal is better described as “try to keep the hand rigid no matter how the clay hits it”?

That probably explains why I had such trouble with it back when I messed with this in, I think, school or something. That and maybe the difference between the NT explanation and the ND understanding of the explanation, which is something I've only become more aware of over time. >.>

What I really enjoy is that you're not taking the piss out of each other. Between reverse trivia, citation needed and TOTPAL we have so many instances of you guys taking the piss out of each other that it's kinda nice watching a group of friends doing stuff they've wanted to do and supporting each other. There's not a lot of content out there where men are being supportive of one another and I think we could do with a bit more of that

Well done Matt, that's excellent work! Impressive.
I noticed Jo using a form of English that I call "Trainer Imperative Participle" - for example, "putting your clay in the middle" instead of "put your clay in the middle". My personal trainer used to use that as well, and it's all over TH-cam in countless live action fitness tutorials etc. As far as I know it's not "formal" English but there must be a reason why it has evolved... I've long wondered whether linguists have an official term for this. I know Tom's into that stuff, but he's unlikely to see this, so would any other linguists care to comment?

So, Gary got to make a bacon buttie in a steam locomotive, and Tom got to drive a Zamboni.
And those have a... I'm probably using the wrong word, but I'm going use it regardless. Those have a surreal WOW-factor, with a healthy helping of silliness.
But Matt's has been the only truly impressive video of the three shown thus far.
I'm not saying the previous two were bad, of course. Far from it.
But this one you can get invested in. The others were silly hijinks.
I hope you all know what I mean, and it doesn't just come off as insulting Tom and Gary.

Love pottery! Haven't practiced in a while, but it's not terribly hard to do, you can just lay up rolled-flat bits or ropey bits and, make basically anything that'll stand up, or not. Or you can throw it on a wheel, like this with -- as you can see -- only a bit of practice. And you go from something goopy (wet) or dull-thudly (like, well, you know, dried clay) to something glass-hard and... it clinks! It's real, glassy/crystalline, solid ceramic material (well, somewhat porous depending on mix and firing temp), and 100% the real deal that you get at the store.
It's also chemistry, the mixes for clay bases and glazes depend on a pretty minor amount of it -- basically, mix certain oxides with certain others, from these respective groups, and you'll have something that works; add a few colorful metals, and now it's pretty too.
And you don't even need much of a kiln; clay bits tossed in a bonfire of course get crispy, it just needs to be done slowly (over many hours) to keep from warping/cracking the body. It's no accident it's one of the most ancient techniques; you can literally sit down by a riverbank, with a shovel and some fire, and in a few days' work over a couple weeks, make something neat and useful!
Even technical ceramics, for various industrial, chemical, electronic and other applications, aren't much different; they're just handled with a bit more care, as precise chemical composition, structure, etc. may matter. That means more machine handing of course: mills, presses, carefully-managed kilns, etc., but it's still basically glomming fine particles together and heating the piss out of 'em. :)
