  • I am using salvaged hard wood reclaimed from the demolition of a conservatory to build a super king sized mid century modern style bed frame. The wood is a mixture of meranti and mahogany and there are lots of nails, screws and holes in the wood that I need to deal with!

Good on you making Dylan another bed, can't wait to see how his new lounging spot turns out. It's really neat to see the wood from the conservatory being reused, too.

The first thing I learnt when I began the DIY>woodworking journey, is that something may look OK, but be totally rotten underneath. The second was the opposite: it may look rotten, but be really good quality.
This project is the second. I love that feeling when you discover the gorgeous grain hidden beneath an ugly finish.

The best thing with this channel (except from Dylan ❤) is that you are always thinking of how to save money. Many other channels make projects that cost way too much for a normal person to build.

You have my sympathies, we had a similar issue with 2 of our cats taking up half the bed. We solved it by buying a bed for our youngest (and largest) which they stole. The youngest now sleeps on our bed but stretched out parallel to us.

Hi Keith, really enjoyed wathing this first Video of your Bed project, its looking great and from material that a lot of people would have simply thrown on a skip. I'm sure others will have mentioned it and I'm not just saying it for effect, but you look and sound so much more relaxed than in your previous few months video's and actually come across as really enjoying your woodworking again and not just churning out video's to keep the TH-cam engine running, good for you. Look forward to the next episode 😆

Before putting any timber through my planer thicknesser I run a garrett pinpointer over the wood. This will show you if there is any metal in the wood. This has saved numerous blades on my machines. You can get cheaper Chinese ones but the garrett one is great quality and well worth the money.

Enjoyed the video. The "Mahogany" Sapele which is from the DR Congo in Africa. It's now on the CITES watch list so it's becoming more scarce. Good on you for re-cycling it. I've used Sapele for decades and some of it has had amazing grain. I've had 600mm wide boards, 75mm thick and 3.6metres long and had to saw them up for making windows..It's quite easy to tell the difference between Sapele and Meranti. Meranti is very pale in colour, very soft and damages easily and not very durable. Sapele is much denser, far more red in colour when wet, tends to have nicer figured grain and is far more durable than Meranti. Unsual to see a job done with two different timbers so it could be all Sapele.Sash cramps are very versatile, if you buy some 4ft ones you can take the ends off and bolt 2 together (through the peg holes) giving you close to 8ft cramping width .

Not every day you see a project using exterior recycled timber. Clever use and machining of elements is first class.
So much metal in recycled timber nowadays, I find that screws are the most difficult to remove. Did you use Sipo domino’s?

I had to deal with metal in wood as well. To solve the problem I bought a little "dremel" tool and a plunge rounter base for it. With a grinding bit in the spindle I can just plunge in and grind the metal away. Just a tip if you ever come across a metal inclusion that doesn't want to come out.

Kept the wood, didn't know what to do with it for several years, then decided to make a double bed for the spare room, obviously handy for visiting relatives. I think the wood was similar to yours, but included some sapele. Mine is eurosize (4'9"in old money). Can't wait to say to visiting rellies that you can sleep in our old conservatory!

You think you can build a big enough bed that Dylan can't occupy all the space? Ha! Best solution I've found with our mini panther is to pretend to be working on something, just a piece of paper will do, then casually place it where we want him to go. Usually works just long enough to dive in.
