    I like how you kept one of face boards natural instead of planing. I see a lot of videos where they plane both sides. I think it defeats the purpose of the reclaimed wood . Got a new subscriber . Keep it up brother good work. Thanks for sharing.

    My daughter and I built this bed together and she loves it. We made hers from Nova Scotia maple and finished it with Osmo. We modified a few details (we used bed hardware from Lee Valley) and even added a lot of shadow lines inspired by your other videos. Thanks for the plans!!

    I always find it so fun when you get to the sanding part. I know you hate it, but for some reason, it always makes me think of the scene from the movie "The Boondock Saints." when Willem Dafoe is at the crime scene, and yells while twirling, "And there was a firefight!" I think of the same thing when you sand, but you saying, "And there was sanding!" If you haven't watched those movies before, you seriously should!

    I just finished my version of this bed. Ours is a king size made with western red cedar. All my lumber was rough cut so I milled every piece. I used 6x6 post that were milled down to 4 1/8”x4 1/8”.
    I used everyone of my floor tools on this one. So glad to have a nice jointer!
    Plans do not match the bed in the video or, for that matter, my version either 😅!
    Keep ‘em
    Coming Mr Bourbon Moth!
    Now for some bourbon on ice 😋

    One thought about when you glue up the three pieces of the panels, just put the fourth one in place without glue. Then clamp the fourth one with the other pieces to help with alignment. You can measure the diagonals to check for square. Once the glue is dry lift off the top rail and proceed.

    Now that is one cool bedframe. What it needs though is a couple of chain links in the headboard and maybe stocks on the opposite side ;)

  • @MuttMuttOutdoors
    @MuttMuttOutdoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very nice, did something like this for a neighbor right around when the pandemic started. But I did it almost all with 2X4 studs and the rails were 2X8's. Made a spacer for the slats which were vertical on the headboard and footboard and also use 2X4's for the mattress support slats so there was no need for a center rail. The only hardware other than some screws were 8 carriage bolts where the 1/2 lap joints on each leg supported the rail and all that was needed was the bolts to hold the rails and the headboard and footboard together. IMHO the 1/2 lap joint is TONS stronger than using the hardware and if you are using 4X4's it's super easy to do. The new bedframe was also a ton better than the steel one she originally had where a few of the wheels were broke off and she ended up with storage under the bed.

    I did something similar for my eldest boy recently. I used 4x4 posts and scaffold boards (approx 9x1.5 inches) with the head and footboards mortice & tennoned together directly (I will unashamedly steal the panel idea next time) and used cranked hook & strap gate hinges to attach the side rails as he wanted a chunky industrial look. I hear you on the sanding though, scaffold boards are as rough as a badgers arse when they arrive and took a lot of sanding to get them smooth. The resulting bed was finished with a coat of sanding sealer and Osmo oil polyx hardwax Dark Oak

    Instead of the spacers for the mattress lath, use a couple of lengths of twine and staple them to each end, using one spacer. Put a dowel at each end to stretch the twine and hold the lath in place. When it is time to move, you can just pull up the lath and roll it up in an easy bundle. Monkeying with those spacers is a pain in the tuchus.

I used the same concept in this video except that I do not have all the specialized tools, so mine has a neat, smooth, rustic look. Not a very professional job but a good one. Thank you very much for the inspiration. Ha! I even danced at the completion of my DIY!

    If you have a taper and you’re trying to remove it with a thickness planer, put the fat side in first so that it removes the material from the fat side before the thin side.

    It is so nice to see folks using amazing tools to make amazing things. Those of us in Uncle Sam's Army are always on the move from one location to another while weight of household goods are limited. It would be nice to see or hear about how woodworking can be done like this with portable tools, limited space, and maybe not top quality equipment. Anyone out there that could help a Veteran/Soldier out with some PCS knowledge?

    • @carndt124
      @carndt124 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a lot of folks doing hand-tool only oriented work - little or no power tools. Check "Wood By Wright", "RenaissanceWW", "Rob Cosman" and "Paul Sellers" to name a few examples. Buy dimensioned wood to start and you've avoided the planer and jointer from this project. Add a hand-held router. I built furniture with a hand saw and drill. There are lots of videos of beds out of 2x4's. Find a small project to start and add tools over time. There are a few people working on a table in the corner of their living room or on their apt balcony.
