    Coming from another drummer & HUGE RUSH fan since 81' Going out to all u-tube followers..."my man nailed it!" I saw 1 other cover & thought that one scored about an 85% he was good! You are very good! Back in the day I annoyed my neighbors learning "note for note" The overture & opening of 2112. I know how much work both you guys & countless others went thru to damn near duplicate the greatest drummer still alive & perhaps period! You guys should be PROUD. Trust me people..It's not easy. G.B.

    this is THE track that caused me to become a Rush fan, I havent heard it since my tape screwed up in the late 80s due to excessive playing. My first Rush album and now my latest, reunited at last . Cheers Dude your a starman ;-)

  • @bentleyaudio
    @bentleyaudio 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    First things first: Great job.
    I don't want to overlook that little detail - but that's not the primary reason behind my comments :-)
    I'm a drummer, and a huge Rush fan, and what I find most remarkable about this video isn't your playing - and that's NOT to say that it isn't very good - it definitely is. In fact, it's nearly flawless in it's execution - and that is already saying a LOT.
    But you know what I think makes this video GREAT and, to me at least, superior to many other "Rush fan drumming videos" I've encountered on TH-cam? (this is the only one I've seen of yours, by the way - so far)
    It's hard to convey with words, but somehow, your pure and even lustful enthusiasm for the music of Rush is VERY clearly conveyed. I think perhaps part of the reason may be your choice of "cameraman" (ie: the Tripod!). What I'm trying to say is that, because of the utterly raw simplicity - I mean, It's just a camcorder, and the audio and video quality are only mediocre (no offense, that really doesn't matter at all). But perhaps because of that, I may have recognized myself to some degree - I think I found myself propelled ONTO your drum throne.
    It's the just the honest and joyful enthusiasm you have which is very apparent - and how seriously you take it - and carefully you play it. For example, just your breathing and your subtle body movements during the rests. Although I didn't notice a click track in the audio, I was still there, with you, counting out those same rest notes in my head - and like yours, I too felt my adrenaline escalate in anticipation of nailing the timing of the big drum fills. Of course, I'm referring to the breaks where Peart carefully inserts those big iconic fills between the lone synthesizer staccato 1/8 notes.
    Yeah, those ones! All drummers who are fans of Peart can relate to that - right?! ;-)
    Things that probably would go under the radar for most, but we, your fellow drummers and Peart fans.... we notice these things and can very much relate. Seriously, you could have made a shitload of mistakes, and I STILL would have LOVED this video.
    BUT.... because you DIDN'T make any mistakes....
    I now feel COMPELLED to play/record "The Camera Eye", as if I didn't have a choice! (I'm in the studio and my kit's already mic'd up!). It's amazing how contagious enthusiasm can be if the source is pure!
    To thee, I send a virtual high-five, and a hearty "HELL YEAH!"!
    - Christopher Bentley

    No, I finished my graduate studies a long time ago (MSc and PhD in astrophysics). I just play the drums for fun although I would say that I have studied the instrument for a long time, reading magazines and most importantly, listening to a ton of great drummers.

  • @Astrotama

    Yes, they did play an abbreviated version of the song on the "Signals" tour. It was my first time ever seeing Rush in concert. I'll never forget it!

  • @DrewB68
    @DrewB68 11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very well said! The creativity is the part that separates the masters from the rest of us. Another great thing about Neal Peart is his ability to make "hotshot" percussion an integral part of the arrangement. This isn't mere time-keeping, folks!

    AWESOME!!! This song is a labour for sure to do and I'm not a drummer but I could watch Neil play all day. You nailed this one. Now if you could just find 2 guys that can play these songs as good as you , you're in business with a band that could make some money as a tribute band. Great job even though you couldn't finish it due to time limit.

  • @sungodrah
    @sungodrah 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    an amazing version ,my friend.though I have never been a fan of identical fills and so forth when playing to a song.this way it feels fresh everytime...Peart is a tactician on the skins.incredible vid..

    I could but I won't.... :( Xanadu is one of my favorites, the main reason why I have chimes and bells, etc. It was next on the list but I'm done with TH-cam, They are removing my videos one by one due to copyright crap so I don't have time to waste with them anymore.... :( Sorry.

  • @Astrotama
    @Astrotama  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @343434richie No, I have never seen that video but heard of it. I wish I had the time to do what you mention. But that's a problem for me... I don't play drums more than a few hours a week, if I'm lucky, and now when I do is to practice with my band or learn the songs of our setlist. Oh well. The "tools" are little drum patterns and figures that Neil applies through his career. When you get them once, it's usually easier to understand a fill, etc. next time they comes back in another song...
