San Francisco: City Lights Books, birthplace of a literary revolution

- City Lights might be the most respected bookstore in the world. Founded by Lawrence Ferlinghetti in the early 1950s, the store has a grand history in the world of poetry and cultural revolution. We stopped by for a quick history lesson courtesy of City Lights' events director, and we even corralled local hero Daniel Handler--better known as Lemony Snicket--into talking with us about his experiences as a customer.

Thank you guys for exposing this historic place in SF. My teachers from Asian American Studies, Ethnic Studies to my political-related classes would always mention City Lights, but never know where they were until now.
hope you guys do something about SF State cause that too does have some significantly important history in terms of education and the people.
This was the first time one of these episodes popped up in my subscriptions. Give it some time to grow, if people like it they will watch more of it. And do realise that people aren't ignorant for not caring about the same things you care about, they are just different from you.

In the early 70's I would get the train down to London and visit the now defunct Compendium Books on Camden High Street to buy the Beats as that was the only place in Britain that sold them. Robin Witting England
Really wonderful series!
Everything comes and goes like the tide...I'm gonna try to ride out the wave. I came to SF with only what could be held within my '94 toyota camry. We paid very little for a 3 story loft. I was pushed out with not much notice, the new rent price was over 2 times what had been paid. My heart broke but is on the mend. There is hope in this very pure sunshine, this mysterious and magical landscape. Everything makes an orbit and returns to its origin.

ehhhhhhh idk about this. kinda stretching out my interest. Originally a big fan of the AV Club when they do those unorthodox reviews of random things but idk that this is real interesting. Is this what the channel will be based around? various historical goldmines?
Our own shuttle service or the such for starters? No Tom Cruise movie they twist it whatever.

When you think about what these people are revolting against or rebelling against, it's not inspiring or noteworthy at all, it's sad. They are rebelling against God, against order against laws and rules and against anything considered moral or decent. It's as if they woke up one day and said "the animals have it so much better than we do, why don't we get naked and act like them?"
Rebellion is a word. It’s a word being used by a few people in this film. The books within this shop are multifarious in nature; their scope, extraordinary. For people to want to explore the world - both external and internal - is entirely normal; and what is more, this kind of exploration has being going on for millennia. To believe in god, simply means you believe in god. Judge ye not, lest ye be judged.
