San Francisco: Jimmy Stewart's Vertigo apartment

  • In Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 classic Vertigo, Jimmy Stewart follows Kim Novak all around San Francisco, offering a tour of the city inside the mystery. The two end up at Stewart's apartment, and the location--the exterior, anyway--wasn't a movie set. It's a still-standing residence on Lombard Street, and it doesn't look too different now than it did more than 50 years ago. Jeffrey Anderson from cinematical.com joined Brian to chat about the movie and the city.

When Scotty follows Madeleine note that he is always driving down a street and never up. Down, down down into obsession.

...into the spiral where a straight line merges with the rounded shape of feminine libidnal whirlpool, which opens not only the access into woman sexual organ but into the BROADer (pun int.) realm of simultaneous existential horror & awe ..."Vertigo" (=2 signifiers) is in woman's gaze male cannot read, only to be frustrated by its inaccessability which leads not just into temptation but into the urge to control. That definez "the power of woman s love" - wherever it may Lie (2 signif - again..). All that the male can, thereafter, claim and possess is his own quiant and vain attempt to alleviate the levitation his private perception provides, and that is thru uncertainty ; therefore by obfuscating it into oblivion, and all else concordingly, because infatuation w death corresponds similarly in reference to erotic supremacy.
This is an essential leitmotif in most all of films noir : the chains that bind and liberate - thru deception, connivance & claustrophy. In conclusion, Scottie s a goner, mentally, a shard of his 4mer patriarchal self, even if the feminine mystique is seemingly obliterated as in Bunuel s last film "THIS OBSCURE OBJECT OF DESIRE". What remains is a blank hole in male s soul, if there ever was such a ....vacuum ? The yin-yang polarity is too bipolar. Creates havoc,,not harmony. Surrealism 4 every citizen, every filmgoer, every hitchcockian, every narrowed consciousnessian...every Russian Hillian ..

I posted this on another video. I Google earth Scottie’s Residence - Located at 900 Lombard street. It's been totally changed. It's just a wall with two gray doors and everything painted white including the chimney. I guess the owners got tired of the lookie-loos and selfie takers on their door steps. But standing on the sidewalk you can still see the Coit Tower with the cross traffic of Jones Street.

This is one of the neatest uses of an I Ching symbol in film. Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958).
The iron work design on the red railing is the Hexagram 52 of the I Ching.
Hexagram 52 denotes keeping still or meditation or mountain. Which kind of fits with Jimmy Stewart's character in the film. He's suffering from fits of vertigo from his near fall in the opening chase scene of the film so he basically has to keep still and meditate upon avoiding heights for the entire rest of the movie.

But when Stewart and Novak talk in front of the house it´s shot on a soundstage, as Hichcock allways did unfortunatlly.

In reality, Lombard Street isn't even the crookedest street in San Francisco, let alone the world.
