    Painful cold. I live in St. Louis where it will routinely get into single digits and teens or overnight lows in January and February and at least a couple days a year it will dip below zero but minus 17 is a once every 100 years event. That seems like a regular winter day in MN from what I have heard and read. Minus 22 in the record for StL set in 1884. I remember minus 15 in 1982. Coldest ever for Missouri was minus 40 in Warsaw in 1905. Enough mindless ramblings about winter weather. That diesel seemed to start as well as any gas engine and with well over 200K on the clock even more impressive.

    where are you located that you only had -17? I am an hour north of the twin cities and we had -40 on several neighbors thermometers and a -38 by another guy.
    my 15 had some gelling issue. I plug it in so starting is a non issue. talked to our fuel guy at east central diesel and he says they have a baldwin filter that has a little bigger micron rating then stock so its less sensitive to gelling.
    my 2003 would pop off at -20 without an issue at all.

    What did that do for your performance and mileage with the delete kit?

    • @tedwardo123
      @tedwardo123  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Performance might be a little better... MPG is about the same. My reason to delete was to stop choking my engine/turbo/grid-heater with carbon and get rid of the DPF. The 70,000 mile service for the 6.7 is $800 around here to clean the carbon. My DIY delete was about $1500 including my MM3 programmer so I made my money back quickly avoiding the carbon-cleaning-service and buying DEF fluid.
      **The dealer doesn't clean your grid heater when doing the 70K service, make sure they clean it as it'll get completely clogged eventually. OR do it yourself

    The exhaust brake doesn't do anything in park. It only activates when you are in gear and let your foot off the accelerator pedal. Read your owners manual it will explain it in more detail

    • @tedwardo123
      @tedwardo123  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Vanes on turbo change position for variable geometry. (VGT) Exhaust Brake technically is only when your moving.... but the turbo does the same thing to put more load on the motor when warming up. So, speaking of reading... look for the diesel supplement manual and find the passage " "Engine idle speed will automatically increase to 1,000 RPM and engage the Variable Geometry Turbocharger at low coolant temperatures to improve engine warm- up"" VGT = Exhaust Brake = faster warm ups.

      You could hear the exhaust break engage shortly after starting. The high pitch whining is not heard without the exhaust break engaged during warmups. It makes a huge difference in how fast the motor warms up.

    Do you use antigel or anything?

    • @tedwardo123
      @tedwardo123  6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nope. MN gas stations sell #1 diesel mixed with #2 diesel at certain mix ratios depending on time-of-year. Diesel sold in TX would need antigel most likely.

    Is it bad to start the engine with the engine break on ? Is it normal to have white smoke coming out in cold temperatures like that?

    • @flippingugly3063
      @flippingugly3063 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trucks at 352,000 miles as of now 9/2022... Engine brake is actually the turbo with turbo-vanes moving to put a load on the engine. It's auto so you don't turn this off or on. It's normal to have white smoke when cold...

    I'm surprised your oil pressure is only showing 53 psi on a cold start like this. I think on the earlier trucks oil pressure can easily hit 100 psi with non-synthetic 15w-40 oil on such a cold start. I know nothing about the newer trucks, so maybe they have some kind of bypass circuit to ensure full oil flow?
